I absolutely LOVE sleep :-* and truely value its presence in my life. However, I hardly EVER get enough. Its probably from working irregular hours and having a family and all that, I'm sure, and I can only dream of the day when I can sleep as long as I want every night, like on Saturdays, before I started my first job in high school. YEAH, LIKE THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN AGAIN. Now I can go with maybe six hours a night for only a few days, after that it is ALL DOWN HILL. Seven hours seems to be my average, but to really feel great, I could really go for eight or nine on a regular basis. How about YOU?
What's the average number of hours you sleep?
How many do you think you should be getting?
Anyone out there feel great with less than six per night (If so, you are my hero)

Prettymuch same answer as you! I keep odd hours working with people in different time zones, and I'm a parent, so I never sleep as much as I want. I can just barely function on 5 or so hours of sleep, but I never feel great. If I get 6 or 7 hours, I feel more or less human and not too bad... but ideally, if I could sleep 8 or 9 hours, I'd LOVE that. As it is, what I don't get in sleep I make up for in caffeine.
Seven during the week, more on the weekends. Unless I'm going through one of my occasional bouts of insomnia, at which point it may be 0-4, and I'm a zombie :(

Lately? 3-4 hours a night. I've been having sleep problems.

8-9 hours a night, but that's easier said than done.
Usually, i sleep five to seven hours when I sleep well and 2x2 or 2x2.5 hours when I sleep like me.
I need a solid 8 hours to feel rested. I get tetchy on much less and lack energy if I get too much more.
My wife has the most appalling sleep patterns and has done since she was a kid. Her parents where of the 'follow routine' school and she was of the 'fuck you' mentality. Thus bed time became a battle and she would try to stay awake as long as she could. Even now she will fall asleep on the couch and when she wakes up deny she had fallen asleep. She's the only person I know who snores while awake :D

Same, I get grumpy if I have any less than 8 hours. I think my "perfect" number of hours would be 9.
I tend to get 6.5-7 hours about average. If I get to bed late where hitting that amount becomes impossible, I stay awake long enough to get 5 hours. I don't do well when I am startled awake from the deepest of sleep, and my sleep cycles seem to be about every ninety minutes.
I don't nap and don't sleep that much extra on the weekends. I get up at 4am for work, so sleeping in is 6am for me.
More
I can only sleep for 8 hours, then my head says: "WAKE UP!!!!" and I can't sleep more... My boyfriend can sleep like 12 hours in a row.
At weekdays I sleep 6-7 hours per night, so I'm pretty tired when I go to school.
I sleep about 7 hours (go to sleep sometime between 23:30 and midnight and wake up at 6 a) never feel tired during the day although I wouldn't say no to a couple more hours of sleep!

Ditto - though I NEVER get to have anything over 8 hours and I'd probably regret the wasted time if I did. If there were more hours in the day, I'd fill them with more
stuff rather than sleep.

I could too, if T, having a job, et cetera, would let me. I love to sleep. I think about sleeping like some people think about rich desserts.
Most nights I get about 8.5 hours of sleep. LOL I didn't even realize it was that much until I sat down and counted it up. On the weekends I also like to take an afternoon nap whenever possible. Yum.
On the days I work, I function fine on six or seven hours. On my days off I've been known to sleep for 10 hours, but usually feel a bit groggy for the rest of the day. Actually, anything over eight or so hours leaves me feeling that way.

Sounds like my husband! I'll see him nodding off on the couch and suggest he should go to bed. He'll deny being tired. When he starts to snore, that's when I throw things at him and make him go to bed. He's seemingly incapable of going to bed earlier than 1-2 in the morning, but it's usually closer to 3-4 in the morning.
I NEED at least 6 hours a night to not be miserable, but 9 is my preference when I can get it. I can function (kind of) on small amounts of sleep, but i don't like doing it. In some cases, it's easier for me to pull an all nighter than it is to nap for 2 or 3 hours and then have to get up.

.. Actually I wish that I could sleep more than 8 hours. Ist boring when I'm the only one awake D:
Here's an interesting tidbit about me:
My brain produces very little melatonin, the chemical that triggers sleep activity. I need to take melatonin pills in order for me to fall asleep, and If I don't, then my mental state starts to degrade rather quickly. Without the medicine, I could go about three or four days before being able to sleep a little, but I'd wake up after an hour or two.
It is...not a pretty picture. Without the medicine, I would have died in my youth from sleep deprivation.

Interesting. Do you ever make use of you ability to stay awake or do you simply get tired like we all do but can't sleep?
On weekdays I get around 3, 4 or 5 hours of sleep if I'm lucky. I don't take day naps, so the main problem with this is that it accumulates, and by Friday I feel like a zombie.
I try to make up for it during the weekends though, so in the long term it hasn't really affected me that much yet.

I can, if I wish, but generally my mental state starts to look pretty ugly after about three days.
I can go 24hrs without sleep and not be a problem but that could be due to the fact I have had a lot of practice at doing so. Once I fall asleep though getting up again is the problem, I love that feeling of just lying in bed drifting between consciousness and deep sleep and can easily sleep for 12 hours if I get the chance to. According to the sleep cycle app I get about 5h 25m on average and very rarely feel like I'm missing out on sleep but I have never had a routine so just sleep when I feel the need to and it works for me.

Oh, I am. I have to force myself to get in bed around 11, otherwise I'll probably be up most of the night. On weekends I'm usually not asleep till 2 am. I've used melatonin for sleep too , as well as Unisom, Ambien, Ativan, Valerian Root, and lots of other pills that I rotate between when one combination stops working. Not fun :(

Bravo to you if you are able sleep 3-5 hours on most days! But that sounds insane! My eyes would be bloodshot by day three for sure 8) I used to get 5-6 hours a night during the time my oldest daughter was 0-2 yrs old because my evening shifts were late, and opposite of my wife's, and I had to get up early after having worked the evening the night before, so she could go to work in the morning. The weekends weren't much better. My wife and I would even compete with each other for sleep. "No it's MY turn!! But, You just had a nap!!" ....LOL......I don't know how I did it...oh yeah, 4 cups of coffee per day :o Good thing I had enough working brain cells to remember to take LOTS of photos, because unfortunately, I can barely remember those first couple of years. Although I could still use a little more sleep, it is much better now! I don't even drink coffee anymore, just decaf, sometimes. Now I squeeze a nap in every now and again and that helps a little. Naps ROCK!!

Now I work that shift from time-to-time, but I can never get used to it. The daylight keeps me from sleeping a full night, would be lucky to get 4 following a night shift. I hear black curtains help, though I've never tried them.

Yeah, but I'm starting to feel the toll of it. Thing is I've been switching days for nights for so long now that my biological clock must've altered and it's difficult to get back to normal. ???
Out of curiousity's sake, have you ever tried going to sleep by listening to meditation music? It might work, since that sort of music alters people's brain waves.
I also drink quite a bit of caffeine but in the form of soda and not coffee. Certainly doesn't help. :P

I'm in the same boat, I worked nights. 11 pm to 9 am, with an hour off about halfway through the night, when I'd eat dinner, or breakfast, depending on my mood. I definitely got used to it, and I don't think I ever adjusted back, either. I'm kind of back on a more normalish schedule now, just because the people I work with are in time zones that more or less work with mine... but I still typically don't fall asleep until insane hours. So whenever I have my daughter at my place, I tend to nap when she does, or catch random 30 minute catnaps here and there. When I don't have her, I tend to stay up way later than I should to catch up on work, which I'm doing now. :P
Quote from: xSilverPhinxIs anyone else also mostly nocturnal here?
Mostly. A circadian "rhythm" it is not, in my case. More of an "occasional, sporadic clattering noise." My problem is similar to Semaestro's except his is worse, by the sound of things. My mind deteriorates quickly enough (he says three days, which is impressive) but I've never been particularly worried about
dying. I've only heard of one sleep disorder than can keep you awake long enough to kill you, and I don't have that.
Kind of sucky really. Insomnia is one of those problems that, in addition to making it near impossible to work regular hours or function generally, can attract a lot of fraud. So many people have issues with their sleep and - as far as chronic, lifelong insomnia goes - there is no cure. You pick a medication and expect to be on it for the rest of your life, essentially. So people are desperate, which means the discerning among them have to sift for real solutions in an ocean of bullshit, put there to prey on that desperation. Even real doctors, after throwing every prescription drug under the sun at you and finding this still isn't enough to make you leave them alone, will start telling you comforting lies.

Well I used to listen to calm, classical music to help me, but the daylight just does me in and keeps me up ??? Usually, when I work overnights it is due to someone calling in sick, and so I end up working a double. I usually work from 2pm to 1030, which is my normal shift, and that will extend until 6 or 7 the next morning, which I don't mind because the extra pay is good:) However, I have little time to prepare for it by catching sleep before work and since I can only sleep for a few hours the next day, I usually compensate by hitting the hay mid-evening, and so although I don't ACTUALLY catch back up, I feel the best doing it that way ^_^ Thank goodness I don't have to do THAT too often :)

I've found, in the last couple of years, that I cannot have caffiene after mid-day or it'll screw up my sleep. When I was a teenager, I could drink 5 cups of coffee and go right to bed without a problem, but somewhere in my early 20s, I started getting sensitive to it.
Even now, if I have something caffeinated from 3pm onward, it makes my brain all crazy when I try to go to sleep.

I had to stop drinking anything caffeinated for the same reasons. Drinking decaf kind of tricks by brain into thinking I'm getting coffee and I'm not drinking nearly the same number of cups. Whereas drinking regular made me need MORE regular, especially after the "down" I would get, in which I would often drink it too late in the day. Having coffee six to nine hours before bed WILL keep me from falling right asleep. Now I don't have that trouble because I'm allowed to naturally become sleepy :)

Gasp! No cake? No coffee? Aww! D'8
I can sleep for 12 hours straight, but a good chunk of that is probably my dependence on caffeine. I've already become used to having a cup of black tea every morning, and I stay groggy for the rest of the day if I don't get any. I've functioned for 24 hours with no sleep before, but I tried doing something similar while adding a lot of caffeine once... it was not pretty. Long story short, it looked like I was high, sporadic laughter included.
I remember the partying days of my early 20's and sleeping anywhere from 10-14 hours. Those days sure were fun ;D. I've never really needed a whole lot of sleep. I can operate on 4 hours but six is ideal. Sleeping late to me is 7 hours. I have to watch what time I go to bed. If I go to sleep too early I'll wake up very, very early. Just the other night I accidentally fell asleep at 10pm and was up by 2:30. On those nights, I have a tough decision to make, either stay up til time to go to work or force myself back to sleep and end up possibly over sleeping. I try to go to sleep at about 1am and wake up at about 6am. That is perfect for me. I still wake up early on weekends but I do take naps. Weekend naps are the bestest!!! ;D
Usually I get by on 5-7 hours of sleep, but if I have been working nights for a while I will eventually do a 12 hour stint just to get my head back on straight.
I am also nocturnal by nature, but can easily get used to a regular schedule for a job, school or whatever I have going on. I usually require at least 8 hours but prefer 10.
It's 04:45 and The Asmo is awake and bored slightly.
Last night I woke up around 4 am or so with an upset stomach and never managed to get back to sleep despite 4 antacids. Luckily I'm working from home today, but that zombie feeling is back. Curses whoever cooked that meal for dinner! (me)
