Title: The Hobbit
Post by: xSilverPhinx on March 17, 2012, 09:59:20 PM
Is anyone else psyched for this movie when it comes out in December?  8)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI3f4b-b8ig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI3f4b-b8ig)

Glad Peter Jackson will be directing this one too. I loved their adaptation of the LotR series.

My husband certainly is.  I'm looking forward to it, but he's counting down the days.  He's got The Hobbit wallpaper and screen savers on his computer.  If he could get away with it, they'd be on mine too.   :D

I am also very excited! I always liked the Hobbit book better than the Lord of the Rings books.

LOL

They used to have downloadable countdown clocks that you would place on your desktop for certain movies. They would count down the minutes too. ;D

I read the Hobbit when I was around 7 or 8 (can't remember exactly) and thought they were quite fascinating. ;D

The movie is going to be in two parts, which means that they will be better able to develop the story but on the downside we'll have to wait a year till the conclusion comes out.

An Unexpected Journey (dec 2012) and There and Back Again (dec 2013)

Sadly no. I loved the book as a kid but its something about the film adaptation of Lord of the Rings that I could not stand, they are just too twee for me and if the trailer is anything to go by then it looks like more of the same. I was excited when Guillermo del Toro was involved with the project as he wanted to take the first film in a different direction from the Lord of the Rings, but when he left I lost interest.

I actually love Peter Jackson as a director. Bad Taste is my favourite of all his movies.
However I have already seen countless hours of Peter's adaptation of middle earth, I would have prefered to see a different style in the Hobbit.

I would also prefer to see Peter doing something different.

I'm looking forward to it, and I'll admit I searched that clip for a glimpse of Aidan Turner, who left Being Human in order to do the next batch of LotR movies, but I realized I probably wouldn't recognize him thru the make-up.

In ten years, perhaps?

I find it odd that he stayed relatively quiet after completing the LotR movies. I had expected him to go on to be a world-class director. ??? Would've been interesting to see how he did in a very different genre, such as sci-fi or something.

I hope I'll be able to watch it on day one too, hopefully it'll have a worldwide release date, but with the necessary subtitling, that's rarely the case :(

I had to look him up (I've been a bit isolated from movie culture for a while now...)

He's Kili, or the second dwarf firing a bow that Gandalf introduces.

He did King Kong, which was pretty spectacular.
I thought The Lovely Bones was terrific.
He is also going to do Tin Tin and Spielberg will be a hard act to follow.

Most people look at me like I just shat an their mother when I tell them that, but I also don't like Star Wars, Star Trek (except the latest movie that was great), or Doctor Who and I would say they all have a similar sort of cliquey style about them that I don't find appealing.

OK, got him on a second look.  Also noticed that the Oakenshield person is being played by Richard Armitage.  This should be interesting.

I did watch King Kong with anticipation and I didn't feel let down, even though I don't particularly like the story. As for Lovely Bones, I'll have to rent it or something sometime, in all honesty it's film that I had never heard of before (damn, I feel like such an island).

Did you, being a New Zelander, recognise any of the outdoor scenarios he filmed in? What a stunning country you live in. ;D

I also don't like Doctor Who (watched just one episode and thought...nah). As for Star Trek, I actually like it as a whole better than Star Wars, but never really got into it. I like some philosophical elements of Star Wars, but as scientific reality, it keeps me biting my lip quite a bit (I just can't get over those things ::) ).

What sort of movies do you find more appealing?

I think that it's kind of cool that the producers cast some actors that aren't as well known in the Americas for prominent roles (unless I'm totally mistaken...I'm actually one of the least qualified people to ask about which actors are famous in which parts of the world :P ). It's what PJ did when he directed LotR though. :)

I remember poo-pooing all the advance hype for the LOTR movies when they were announced, since the new Star Wars trilogy was coming out soon and I was sure it would be superior. Needless to say, egg-on-face :) I'm definitely looking forward to this. I found The Hobbit much more readable than LOTR.

I thought the book was a little boring, but from the trailer, i'm sure the dragon battle will actually be epic.

The Lovely Bones Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KATEIvQx518&feature=related)
It's a pretty serious drama, in a similar vein to Heavenly Creatures.
It wasn't released as a Block Buster, just something that Peter and Fran wanted to do.

Yes, its actually become quite a tourist thing, people come over here to see some of the locations that were used to shoot LOTR.
Most of the wide shot scenery stuff is the South Island, it is spectacular.

oo thats a hard question, I watch so many films and have such varied tastes I don't think I can really answer that, but here is a quick list of some of my favorite film that I can think of as that's probably a better way to answer the question: Layer Cake, Back to the Future, Blade Runner, A Room for Romeo Brass, Nil by Mouth, Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Amelia, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, A Single Man, Fargo, Paris Je T'Aime, The Lives of Others, Four Lions, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Tony Takitani, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, I Am Love, Do the Right Thing, The Grifters, Crooklyn.

The film I am most looking forward to is Prometheus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHcHYisZFLU).

Well, unless they have managed to cast someone disgustingly cute for a role that doesn't call for it again, I think this will be very good indeed.

In real life I know many "disgustingly" cute people in jobs that don't call for being that cute and yet...

But yeah, I know what you mean.  It is big money business after all, sex sells, there is no way around that fact.

I agree about the comparision between the books. If you can get past the first half of the Fellowship of the Ring, you can get through them all well enough (all uphill from there where the adventure really starts). As for the Hobbit, it's enjoyable from the start.

I'm wondering who you might be referring too. ??? Gollum, by any chance? :P Guess not.

I'm glad that they re cast Ian McKellen as Gandalf. On the other hand it's a pity that Ian Holm isn't going to be playing the younger Bilbo as well, after watching Henry V I noticed just how good of an actor he is.

Gollum was cute-ish, but no, I was not talking about Andy Serkis. The wizards were pretty much perfect too, as were the elves.

I know it's a little off-topic, but I hate how studios re-release movies with changes to "improve" things. It really takes away from the experience of watching them again. Star Wars is the worst offender, of course, but Star Trek does it too. They re-released the original series with new special effects, and I just read that they're going to do the same thing with "Star Trek: The Next Generation", which actually had decent effects, especially for the time. It's all so damn gimmicky.

End rant :)

Personally, I like cool-looking effects. Especially in Sci-Fi. Our view futuristic- or alien-looking has changed in the past few decades, and in my opinion, a lot of the old Sci-Fi sucks as far as the effects go. Terrible robots too, where there are those.

To be honest I never watched a remake where they redigitised special effects. I think I would watch the LotR series if they released it in 3D though, for the sake of a different experience.

Though imagining Lost In Space redigitised does seem weird, and so it must be with other movies that were realeased maybe around 10 to 15 years ago. The difference between the original and modernised is too big.

I heard about this, (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1784071) they wanted to release a wide screen version and it was possible with the original film but the special effects were another matter, they had to be recreated.  The old squarish TV series do look old, last generation not next.
