I hope this doesn't mess with my internet.
Fears of disruption as big solar storm strikes the Earth (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17295337)
QuoteThe Earth is currently being battered by a storm of charged particles from the Sun, which could disrupt power grids, satellite navigation and plane routes.
The storm - the largest in five years - will bombard the Earth's magnetic field throughout Thursday.
It was triggered by a pair of solar flares - the largest of their kind - earlier this week.
As a result, the Northern Lights may be visible at lower latitudes.
The effects will be most intense in polar regions, and aircraft may be advised to change their routings to avoid these areas.

Maybe it will knock the power out of the school and I can go home.
There was a BBC Horizon programme about this. The fact that Mars no longer has a protective magnetic field is one of the main reasons it will not be terra formed.

I remember hearing something about that, pretty amazing stuff.
Vanity Fair's Juli Weiner posted this a few hours ago.
Solar Flare Etiquette: How to Blame Every Conceivable Personal Problem on the Sun Storm (http://www.vanityfair.com/online/daily/2012/03/solar-flare-problems-sun-storm-gps-satellites)
QuoteToday's enormous solar flare may disrupt "satellites, power grids and communications networks over the next 24 hours," according to Space.com. Sounds like a situation ripe for exploitation! Here are number of common social problems that can be blamed on the pesky astronomical anomaly. Hail, heliocentricity!
I'm sorry I got too drunk at the company party --> The solar flare disrupted my biological rhythms --> So I forgot to eat dinner
I'm late for work today --> I woke up on time and checked the news and saw a lot of people talking about astronomical news --> I assumed that meant it was Daylight Saving Time so I went back to bed for an hour
Admittedly, that advice I just gave you was pretty terrible --> I'm in a bad mood today --> I just lost a bet about whether there would be a solar flare today or not
I'm going to have to cancel our dinner on Saturday --> My parents are coming into town --> They're weirdly religious people who worship solar flares and we have a really busy weekend of prayer
I'm sorry I drunk-texted your best friend --> I meant to drunk-text you --> The solar flare made the text go to the wrong person --> Also it changed your name to "Susan"
I forgot my wallet --> No, just kidding, I lost my wallet --> And couldn't find it because my GPS is broken --> Because of the solar flare
Sorry I drove my car into yours --> I didn't see the red light --> Some solar particles got in my eye
Your one-man play based on a Marxist reading of Absalom, Absalom! sounds incredible --> Unfortunately I can't go because I have a new satellite-repair internship --> All the satellites are messed up because of the solar flare
:o
All this was happening yesterday and I was totally oblivious to it. ::)

I was just watching an episode of "How the Universe Works" which also mentioned this. Pretty interesting stuff. Maybe that movie "The Core" really was onto something ;)

Yes, maybe I should sacrifice a maths textbook to the sun in thanks. :P

Yes! It's on Netflix streaming right now, I've watched about half of it thus far. They did a great job highlighting the really interesting stuff without dumbing it down.
