Title: Christians send death threats to Miley Cyrus over atheistic tweet.
Post by: Guardian85 on March 08, 2012, 08:35:51 AM
Saw this clip on The Young Turks and found a little more respect for Miley Cyrus. Did not expect her to quote Lawrece Krauss.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmQYH7CdRXQ

My reaction: How insecure must the christian right be to be conserned over a tweet from Hanna freakin' Montana?

Miley who?

She was a Disney star who went to drugs just like the rest of them. She was famous for her alter-ego "Hanna Montana" Had a TV show, and did tours around the world. Personally, I thought she was talentless.

Why do people get worked up over quotes? Quoting is re-telling of something someone else said, often outside the contents it was originally said in. Personally, I prefer original phrasing, and if it happens to be almost the same as something someone somewhere said at some point, well, cool.

Is quoting smart people somehow supposed to make a person appear smarter? Or does quoting charismatic people give your opinions more weight?

Oh, and no, beyond this little rant about quoting being overrated, I have little constructive to say... Except perhaps a "good for her!"

Death threats against somebody for using their freedom of speech even though it disagrees with the majority. How American!

I liked what the guy in the youtube clip said. "I'm sure they think they're pro-life... 'hey, let's go kill Miley Cyrus!' "

Well, good for her for posting whatever she wanted to. I'm also unsure why anyone would get enraged over it to the point of sending death threats, but I suspect that those who would bother sending them don't have two critical thinking neurons in their brain to rub together. Only absolute fundies, or absolutely ignorant people, would bother or care. And I hate to say it, because there are a ton of young smart people out there so this doesn't apply to them... but I just can't picture some 70 year old couple sitting down in the kitchen over a cup of tea saying "what do you think, dear? Should we send Miley some hate mail today?"  ::) So, I suspect it's probably the younger Jesus freak/"down with evil-ution" crowd who would bother. That, or the parents whose kids are obsessed with Miley Cyrus, worrying that she's secretly going to lead their kids down the path to the devil.

There aren't enough eye-rolling smilies in the universe for how dumbasses like this make me feel.

Didn't think she had it in her.  She's still talentless, but at least she seems to be smarter than her dad.

Poem is a scary word but short lines are easier to read from a screen.

In open fields of wild flowers,
she breathes the air and flies away
thanks her Jesus for the daisies 'n roses
in no simple language... someday
someday she'll understand the meaning of it all,
jars of clay.  (I don't understand the jars of clay)

and then she grew,
crap and a few very good things happened,
yet she opened her eyes,
saw the world as messed up as it is,
understood the meaning of it all,
astounded at how paper-thin it was
she ditched her simple, naive hope
Jesus would make it all better,
Ye ha, so became a secular humanist,
found HAF and found friends. - Amicale as clumsily adapted by Pudding, sorry, it could be tuned.

I love it, Pudding!  :D

Jars of Clay is a Christian alternative/pop/rock band that was really popular (at least in the Christian North American world, lol) when I was in my teens. The song I referred to is called 'Love Song for a Savior'. I'm sorry to say that at the age of 14, I heard it for the first time and unfortunately adored it. Sigh.  :P

Buddy, you should TOTALLY find a coffeehouse or poetry jam and just go for it!  :D

EDIT: And yes, I have definitely found friends here at HAF. You folks are awesome!

That sounds like and Asmo band name.

There is a nice coffee lodge owned by my brother's best friend. Maybe that's the place.  :D  Not really, I would rather die than get up and speak in front of people.

I remember Jars of Clay. My college roommate was kinda into them. I think it was around that time when I first admitted to him that I didn't believe in god, and he was a bit dumbfounded. Not that he was religious at all, but I don't think he'd ever met an atheist before. Luckily it didn't matter; we ended up living together all 4 years of college.

Prior to this I simply liked Miley for her beauty and her recent willingness to rebel against certain unjust laws. Now, I'm beginning to really respect her has a person. I'm very curious as to how her career turns out;

At this point though, it could have simply been her publicist telling her feeding her (or her twitter employee) this information and instructing her (them) to post it.

I'm continuing to hold out hope she doesn't go the way of B. Spears or any other number of the Mickey Mouse Club though.

Haha, I think she's already better off than brittney. She isnt pregnant trailer trash with a shaved head and abusive boyfriend. XP Yeah, ... Spears is crazy.

I dunno, SD, I've never met "trailer trash" worth about 150 million before.  :P

Note: there's nothing wrong with being pregnant, or poor, or shaving one's head. There's a lot wrong with having an abusive partner, but the wrong falls into the lap of the abusive person, I'd say.

There is an issue with acting irresponsibly when you have kids, abusing drugs and alcohol like crazy and going off the deep end cause of it. Being so horribly self indulgent and irresponsible when you have kids is something to be ashamed of. I hope she cleans up her act, and stays cleaned up if she wants to have custody of her kids and keep it. I also sincerely hope Miley Cyrus doesn't end up like that. I forget who said it, but the quote goes something like 'we all have a useful purpose in life, but for some of us it's to serve as a warning to others'.

Thank you for clarifying. I must have remembered incorrectly. Salvia has been criminalized in Louisiana where I live, but I'm not sure if it was criminal activity in California, or where she was at the time.

So now, I like her based purely on looks... Oh well, it isn't the first time and I'm sure won't be the last.

Wow. That stuff's fully legal here, you can buy it in convenience stores and smoke shops. Pot isn't legal, but having a small amount of it on your person's basically decriminalized, and there are enough doctors here who'll give someone a license for medical marijuana. Then again, it's Canuckistan.  :D

Same here.  They have "doctors" working out of booths at every festival here in town all summer long.  It's such a freaking farce, I don't know why we don't just legalize it and be done with it.
