Title: Checking in.
Post by: Reprobate on February 10, 2012, 06:56:13 PM
Hello, all. My name is Jim. I just joined, mostly because I like interesting intellectual debate and discussion on a pretty diverse range of topics. I haven't had a chance to browse the forums yet. I'll begin doing so as soon as I finish typing one of my normally awkward introductions.

I don't remember ever believing in a god or gods, and at times that's been a pretty awkward situation. I know a lot of people who believe without any thought into why, and who don't seem capable of skeptical inquiry into their views. I find that extremely annoying.

I don't know what to say about myself. If there's anything you want to know, just ask me. I'll answer as thoroughly and as honestly as I deem appropriate.

New here myself. The natives seem friendly.

We try to lull them until we can arrange a gathering worthy of roasting a long pig.

Welcome Jim, you're looking a bit lean, here have something to eat.

Welcome, Jim!

Natives are indeed friendly -  at least until the missionaries troop in and attempt to civilize them. I suspect there's a back room lined with shrunken heads . . .

For the backroom of shrunken heads see the dump of crazy troll posts.

Thanks, all. I'm sure there is a pretty regular procession of missionaries to entertain the natives.

Welcome, Jim! You do have a great user name. Re: not remembering ever believing in a god or gods: Were you taken to church as a kid? Asking just out of curiosity--feel free to ignore the question if it's too personal.

I did go to church a few times with an uncle or my grandmother. Once I went with another uncle, only 6 years older than I am, who thought it would be funny to get me to go and sneak out without telling me. I don't remember my father ever attending a church service, and my mother, who came from a devout christian family, never attended regularly until after my father died. I think it's some weird take on Pascal's wager on her part.

I wanted to take one home to talk to and have tea parties with, but Whitney wouldn't let me. :( She said they have to remain on display, warding off the evil spirits of their sympathisers. She is mean.

Thanks. Just for the sake of clarity did you mean the shrunken heads or the natives?

Welcome! I too loved the username, after I looked it up  :-\. I would like to claim I forgot the meaning because my brain is filled with college algebra, but sadly the hardest word I ever learned was antidisestablishmentarianism which I actually learned outside of school when I was partying with some friends. To an admin: can I change my name to Anti-antidisestablishmentarianism?  ;D

shrunken heads.

That's what I thought, but they're probably not much for conversation, unless you can ascribe the voices to them.

Thanks, I thought it might be appropriate to this forum, but I can't take credit for it. That's what a sociology professer/ Presbyterian minister called me and a friend of mine, I embraced it and claimed it solely for myself. Hey what the hell, if there were a god, I'm sure I'd live up to the name.
