Title: Hello. Lifelong atheist here.
Post by: NatsuTerran on January 18, 2012, 01:39:04 AM
Hi guys. My name's Natsu and I've always been an atheist. In fact, I've been a determinist for as long as I can remember, which is the primary reason for my beliefs. I've always assumed that brains and thoughts are a very physical part of nature with free choices not really existing or being dependent on other variables.

I'm trying to become a happier atheist; I have difficulty accepting others for their views at times.

Hello and welcome to HAF, NatsuTerran. I think there may be a few other determinists here.  ;)  I myself am not sure that the universe is deterministic, and I look forward to your future contributions to discussions here.

Well you can sometimes be happy you're not like them.  ;)

Thanks. In all honesty signing up here is against my better judgement. I have OCD and I often ruminate over opinionated matters such as philosophy, politics, or anything else that strikes debate. It can get really bad at times but I am trying to get comfortable with being medicated. I tend to be happier when I just ignore my own beliefs, political/religious or otherwise. The problem is it's always in the back of my head to reassess my views. (I can hear the theists now "zomg it's God trying to reach you!!11") But no, like I said this applies to absolutely any area of disagreement.

This is something I always consciously try to do, even if its just to try and get an understanding of the other argument. Though its easier said than done, especially if it's something I strongly disagree with.

Welcome to the forum. We do have other things then just debates. You could tell us about your pets, what's on your mind, of whether of not you would like to become a vampire in the Laid Back Lounge.  ;D

Despite what Budhorse4 doest say, don't think we wont challenge you on your choice of vamporism, pet or thought of the day.

Though it is probably universal that vampires do not sparkle.  :P

Hi and welcome!  For the record, I think it is a wonderful and healthy exercise to reassess your beliefs within the context of debate.  Personally, I know that there are a lot of people out there who have researched more, or thought more, or are just plain out smarter than me on certain subjects, and I think it's great to be able to grow (not to sound cheesy, I just can't think of a better word for it at the moment) by listening to them and thinking about what they have to say.  But on the other hand, don't let it drive you crazy either.  I think that for a lot of philosophical questions, there isn't only one "right" answer.  Anyway, welcome, and I hope you enjoy it here.

Hi, Natsu!
I understand when you say "I have OCD and often ruminate" over philosophy.
Isn't it nice that we now have forums where there are people who are interested in our ruminations!
I find reading other peoples posts absolutely fascinating.
I come from a family where my ruminations are often ignored.
I look forward to reading about your thoughts!
