Title: Malaysia Opposition's Anwar Freed of Sodomy Charge
Post by: The Magic Pudding on January 09, 2012, 08:26:29 AM
QuoteMalaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim celebrated (http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/malaysia-awaits-opposition-anwars-sodomy-judgment-15318007) a surprising triumph over sodomy charges Monday, pledging to focus his energies on toppling the government in elections expected later this year.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court acquitted Anwar of sodomizing a male former aide, ruling that the prosecution's DNA evidence was unreliable in a verdict that upended Anwar's worst-case scenario of a 20-year prison sentence following a trial that polarized public opinion.

I don't know how prominent this is in news elsewhere.
It seems for the last decade the common view from non Malaysian news sources was that he was accused of sodomy for political reasons.
I've heard his wife interviewed, an articulate and convincing advocate for him.
Anyway good to see the threats lifted, until next time anyway.

So that is a potential 20 year sentence for consensual sodomy?

The latest accusation was it wasn't consensual but the assistant is supposed to be a younger stronger guy so I'm not sure how that was supposed to work.  This wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anwar_Ibrahim_sodomy_trials) has more detail.

QuoteSodomy, even if consensual, is punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment and whipping under Section 377B of the Malaysian Penal Code.
