Title: Vilayanur S. Ramachandran at beyond belief
Post by: Crow on December 23, 2011, 08:40:22 AM
I hadn't seen this talk before and thought it was worth sharing (an oldie but goodie, but then again I'm biased). Vilayanur S. Ramachandran is a neuroscientist at the University of California, Time magazine recently nominated him as one of the most influential people in the world on their "2011 Time 100 list" (http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2066367_2066369_2066125,00.html).

The talk focuses on neuroscience and how it is managing to explain the "religious experience". Its not a long one, approximately 17 minuets combined so give it a watch.

Ye I tried to fix BooksCatsEtc up with him a few weeks ago, she prefered Vigo Mortenson though.

I've read A Brief Tour of Human Consciousness by VSR, and as he said a couple of times in his lecture on the videos, none of this has anything to do with whether or not God exists.  It does tell us a lot about how the brain works, and how experiences are registered, however, and is extremely interesting.

I just watched the first video, and I may reconsider my preference for Mortensen.

Mind on higher things, preacher man.  I was just reminded that, in addition to liking people who make me laugh, I also like people who are really, really smart.  Not sure that the fact that he looks like a young Cheech Marin is working for or against him.

He is smart, I'll grant you that. You are right about the Cheech Marin connection, too - hadn't thought of that.

I first heard him on radio, this could be a better medium for him.
Just listen and imagine some sub continent ideal, this would be a personal thing though, Imran used to do it for many some years back.

If there is an award for most air headed hijack of a thread, not involving a lump of clay, I expect to be nominated.

This is probably in the links you added, but I just have to add this one small part for those who haven't watched the entire talk:
