Title: Facebook Post
Post by: MadBomr101 on December 19, 2011, 02:48:04 AM
The following was posted by one of my "friends" on Facebook earlier today.  She's actually just a woman I work with who sent me a friend request and I approved it to be polite but we really have a very rudimentary relationship, because, frankly, she's kind of a nut.

Also, she obviously doesn't realize I'm an atheist too.

Clearly I'm not going to post names or link to pages that aren't publically viewable but it's the content that's important for discussion.  Cut and pasted from my Facebook homepage.  Excuse the spelling, grammar, and well, pretty much everything else about her post.

"that is really funny and kind of strange how I don't go to church for a few weeks and then when I go back, it is something that is something that impacts me right at this moment in time. Now I think I see why I lost a friend (or so I thought) as week. He had just announced publically that he is an atheist. I think that is why he was pulled out of my life. I think God was trying to tell me that he was defently not the person I needed to be around. I still hope that he one day decides to believe in God and gets saved before it is too late. He is a nice guy down deep inside. I did see that a few times when he let me in to see the real him. This service today was about the bad side of the Christmas story and we learned about the atheism movment that is happening right now. They actually have billboards in South Florida to try and recrut new atheists. The devil is at work and he got that person that I am talking about but he will NEVER get me!"

On behalf of atheists everywhere let me just say, we don't want you.   ::)

So what do you think of this?  She drops her friend because god was telling her not to consort with atheists.  Apparantly he's a nice guy but he needs to get saved before it's too late.  I'm always amused by how readily Xians believe that an omnipotent superbeing has nothing better to do than get involved with all the meaningless trivialities in the lives of the faithful.  God gives a damn who this woman is hanging out with?  Or could it be that SHE determined she couldn't hang out with him because he proclaimed his atheism and she's just shoe-horning god into her decision?

I go with that.

Some people think that anything which conflicts with their beliefs in the tiniest way is the work of the devil.

There are many, many Christians who literally think that each and every atheist is possessed by Satan and everything we say is a demonic test of faith. If someone has that mentality, what can you possibly do?

People like that really belong in the 12th century throwing rocks at heretics and sacrificing livestock to appease their god.  The fact that a lot of those types are running around today, voting, driving, and, worst of all, reproducing, makes me want to bang my head against a wall in disbelief.

How is it posible that humans have evolved so little?  The fact that we can build i-pods, cell phones, and mass produce everything from cars to lollipops is immaterial.  How can 21st century Man still be so superstitious and primitive in their thinking?

It's mind boggling.

So what do you think of this?

She has a case of the SPAGs. You could change your Facebook profile pic to an image of satan.  Too subtle?

I've got at least 3 high school classmates who get on Facebook every morning and post some daily devotional, like it's a competition, and a sister-in-law who provides and end-of-day summary and thanks to god for this, that and the other. Sometimes Facebook is just another way to proselytize. /sigh/

Ooooh, do I know about this.  One of my best and oldest buddies married a Xian woman and scarcely a day goes by that she doesn't thank god for...everything.

- Thank you God for the beautiful sunshine.

- Thank you God for the the means to pay off my credit card debts.

- Thank you God for the laughter of children.

- Thank you God for the many blessings you grant me each and every day.  You are awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, I'm just waiting for the day she thanks god for chocolate and multiple orgasms.

Yes and thank you god for anything good that happens at random or for just plain dumb luck.  I will always retrofit you into everything so that I may praise thy name and cite...whatever, as proof you not only exist but that you take a personal and active interest in my existence and the existence of those I love.

Hey, I just found $17 under the sofa.  Thank you god!!!!

I will although I have no immediate plan to tell her.  I'd like to see what other lovely gems of Xianity she reveals about herself so I need to stay in loop for now.   ;)

You'd think god would warn her of my deception if he's really looking out for her.

I think she is a nut and it would be best (since she is a co-worker) to hide her posts from your wall and restrict her from seeing any of your updates.

Agreed.  Worst idea ever.  There's nothing good that can come about from adding these.

This...is not a bad idea.  Maybe I can make some money off this atheism thing.  I can do it too because I speak even gooder than I write.

This woman is nuttier than a bag of trail mix but being her FB friend has been endlessly entertaining.  She has a habit of impulsively posting her most personal thoughts.  Then, an hour later, she deletes the post and posts an apology for having made the first post to begin with.  Those posts typically have to do with sex and men and her inability to get either.

So, for my own amusement I've chosen to keep her, at least until she figures out I'm an atheist and runs for the delete button herself.

It's very common.  Even if you're not 'friends' with your boss(s) or coworkers, it is still not a good idea to post questionable things on FB.  The fun part is seeing some stuff on my friend's FB page and thinking, "What is Joe thinking??  It's work hours..."  Some people seem hell-bent on displaying every moment of their day, every day.  I don't get it.

Not only that, but it's not uncommon for employers to check on applicant's social networking page.  There's a lot a FB page can tell of a person.

On top of that, I work for City Government and I really really didn't need to be posting anything on FB. I don't do social networking at all.

I'm not a great fan either but a few good things have come out of it for me.  I reconnected with one of my best friends after 18 years and have had the opportunity to chat with several people I admire.

I used to teach in an Associate Degree Nursing program.  Students would regularly friend request me and other instructors on FB.  I always declined politely and told them they could request again after graduation.  We had an instructor that accepted some requests before he'd thought better of it.  Kind of hurt his feelings when one of his student "friends" updated her status to "Sitting in class.... all I'm hearing is 'blah blah blah blah'.  Will he ever shut up?" while he was lecturing.  Embarassing.  We also caught some students blabbing on FB about patients they had seen.  A strict no-no.  I petitioned for a strict "No FB friending the students" policy after that.  I have a facebook, I use it to reconnect with people from the past.  But I do not understand using it to document your every waking moment.  I don't care if your chilling on the couch, cutting your toenails, detox-ing your colon.  Shut up already.  And I don't know any atheists.  But I know a TON of Xtians.  And I think I've seen more scripture on FB than I saw in church.  Every morning, posting a bible verse.  Thanking god for everything.  Once, my mother was being completely ridiculous and not following her physician's advice.  My father was very understandably upset.  So I called her and spent 45 minutes talking some sense into her.  The next day, dear old dad was on FB thanking God for changing mom's mind.  HELLO!?

I guess it is, but unless you use your full name and post personal details, it isn't as easily traceable, at least not by a more determined company detective or investigator (some do run checks on people that work for them or are applying for the job).

I just follow the don't post stuff you wouldn't want repeated rule on facebook and anywhere else online.  My involvment in the local freethought community has me out of the closet anyway; so there really isn't anything I need to hide.  I do, however, place very conservative or very religious fb contacts on the limited profile setting (surprisingly few people) so that they can't see or comment on my posts...don't care what they think and don't want to unnecessarily stir someone up; I don't view fb as a good platform for welcoming debates (though I of course can't keep from throwing in my two cents when something does come up).

I rarely use Facebook, but I have a ton of Christian friends on there due to my Catholic background. They usually post stupid things about god, but never anything like that. You should post a reply, assuming it wouldn't affect your job. Virtual fights and stalking are what that site is intended for, or at least used for.

My daughter does this.  I've told her I think she's insane.

I generally don't socialize face to face with bosses or co-workers either.  I just don't see the point.  I can't be myself without fear of repercussions, and this goes beyond atheism to just about anything.

However, every once in a blue moon I encounter a co-worker who's cool.  There's a guy on my floor who's in that category.  We don't socialize but I wouldn't be afraid to, if asked.  The key here is, exceptions need to be made on a case by case basis, and the standards for trustworthiness and tolerance need to be very high.
Title: Re: Facebook Post

My only real office experience is in places where it is common to be friends with co-workers; even those that are your supervisor.  Those kind of friendships have lead us to stick together and help each other through the recession as the firm started breaking up (through both layoffs and by choice).  I also feel that many of us have built up the foundation for life long friendships from our time working together. So, there is something to be said for office friendships if the social dynamic of the office allows for it.  It does take a special kind of understanding if you boss is also your friend...as is my case currently.

That's amusing, because someone at a party gave me  coupon for dunkin donuts, but they expired today. I didn't use them in time!! DAMN YOU LUCIFER!! :(

But seriously, that is the thing I hate the most about fundies. When good happens, it's god, when bad happens, it'd Lucifer. Well then, if I buy a bad cup.of joe, the devil did it? ???

You just don't get it do you? You missing the expiration date was not the work of Lucifer. But rather the work of god! Had you eaten some dunkin donuts you may have gained some weight, raised your cholesterol and been one more day closer to death. You should be on your knees praying your heart out thanking god for one extra day on this earth.
Wait a minute, if you would have eaten those donuts you would have lost a day on this earth which means you would have been one more day closer to meeting him. Maybe that's what you should have been praying for. I get so confused.

The thing with fundies is, they can take whatever happens and put some sort of spin on it either for god, or against Satan. When you aren't working with logic "Anythings possible".
