Title: I am A Christian
Post by: Egor on December 09, 2011, 12:46:03 AM
Hello, my name is Edward and I am a Christian. I like to debate with atheists, so I've come here to do that. Don't know how long I'll be allowed to be here, but that's life isn't it--we really don't know how long we'll be allowed to be here.

I've read the rules, and basically they might as well not be there, since the way they are worded a person can simply be banned at the moderators will, which is how it is in all forums. But I will try my best not to be rude or offensive.

Basically, I just want to ask some questions and get to know you better as atheists.

Look forward to meeting you,

Ed  :)

EDIT: Please note the Egor had a previous, now unused, account under the name Edward The Theist (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3418) - Tank

I have to tell you, Ed, I get a bad feeling from people who start posting the way you do.  There are a number of Xtians on this site who don't have any trouble not getting banned.  Altho it worries me that you can only try your best not to be rude or offensive (is it really that difficult?) if you can manage to pull it off you won't have any problem either.

Having gotten that off my chest, welcome.

Hi there,

We have a couple of regular Christians and other theists who are very welcome here. There are even more posters (myself included) who used to be Christian, and are fairly understanding of a Christian worldview. You are allowed to have beliefs here, you just aren't allowed to preach them to us.

If you can do that and keep some basic civility, I don't see why there should be a problem.  :) Welcome!

welcome to haf.

I have to tell you, starting out complaining about forum rules and implying that the moderators here will ban people for no reason is not a good way to step out on the right foot.  If you had taken just a few moments to look around first you'd noticed that we have a few Christian members here already that are getting along just fine and are in no danger of being banned.  Sorry, but i found your comment offensive and possibly prejudicial.  If you actually are able to be civil and actually discuss topics instead of being preachy then you won't get banned; those who are uncivil (be them theist or atheist) get the boot.

Yo.

Speaking personally there is nothing you can say that's going to offend me so I guess it's just the mods you have to beware of.  Having said that, Xians are always welcome.  We need your difference of opinion to generate conflict and make things interesting.   ;D

True - without some conflict on a discussion forum, it all just devolves in to a big circle jerk.

Greetings, Egor.  I hope you get along well with us, we're a friendly lot.  However I have to agree withthe others that you didn't make a very tactful start.

Hi Egor

Do you read any Terry Pratchett Discworld novels? The 'Egors' are good characters.

I have to agree with the comments about the tone of your introduction post, it's passive aggressive and indicates a persecution complex. I suggest you read the posts of Ecurb Noselrub (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=41677) as he is a long standing believer and he has no problem being polite in the face of some very blunt comments about his world view and why he holds it. If you can't disassociate yourself from your world view while debating it you could have a hard time here.

Thank you for making the effort to sign up and join in.

Welcome to HAF. (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg32.imageshack.us%2Fimg32%2F2922%2Fcheersi.gif&hash=d22c932723fd55512134b1ae98b018246ccbb424)

Hello and welcome to HAF, Egor. As other members have already pointed out, we don't have any issues with Christians who've read and are willing to comply with the rules here. I've been a member here for a few years, and I've been impressed by the fairness exhibited by the staff of HAF (I only very recently became a moderator, so it's not as if I'm tooting my own horn). You'll have to get to know us a little as people rather than as atheists before you delve into debate, due to the 10 post policy, and that may help you to get a feel for the place.

I hope you enjoy your time reading and posting here. (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg830.imageshack.us%2Fimg830%2F860%2Fsmilew.gif&hash=8238eab24d16418eb1c8cd60d971239ab1363c74)

Hmm. I find babies to be too fattening. Now puppies and kittens on the other hand, those are a nice source of lean protein.

The part of the topic related more to egor's religious beleifs has been split off to religion.

Egor, please use the remainder of your posts needed to reach 10 to better get to know the other members as people.

No more talk about your religious views or how you hate atheism at least until you reach 10 posts...the whole purpose of the 10 posts is to give people a chance to know the names on the screen as real people before jumping into heated debate.

What about the fact that you "snipped" off my entire belief system, which is how people will get to know me as a person? Oh never mind. Strike that.

Okay, let's start again: Hi, I'm Edward. I like taekwondo, philosophy, writing, debate, and dogs. I'm 47, I drive a 2011 Mustang. Sapphire is my favorite gem. Blue is my favorite color. I consider xmas a blasphemous term...doh!

Two of our dogs we rescued from the humane society, the third we rescued from the streets. The one from the street is a border collie mix and we think she's part lycanthrope. The other is a black lab who we often confuse for a piece of furniture, and the third is a Chihuahua/dachshund and she's a headbussa. I have a website or two, but I want to wait until I more secure to show you those. I also write for my blog, "The Believers' Revolt."

I wrote the novel "Caretakers of Eternity" a ghost story about a real estate agent who buys a haunted winery. I wrote "Vital Architecture and the New Design of Happiness," a self-help book about, well, happiness. I've written some poetry and a short story, and I won an award for an article about the Good Samaritan.

Oh, we have a daughter and son-in-law who live in England and from them we have three grandsons.

So what about you? Does anyone have anything in common with me?

Ed

Dogs! Our last 4 dogs are all rescues. We currently have two dogs, a miniature Jack Russell that runs like a rocket powered roller skate and a cross between a Pug and a West Highland terrier, known as a pugland, she would eat until she exploded is allowed to.

Three kids and one grandson at the moment, expecting two or three more over the next few years.

A Mustang..? Really..? Not the Shelby one, I hope..? That thing handles like an old combine harvester. The regular ones with Holden Monaro suspension (Or pretty close) are not too bad, except they sort of feel... Cheap. I was contemplating a purchase of one, you see, so got to test. Decided against both it and the loan I would need to get it.

I don't know what they cost where you're at, but over here, the same money would be MUCH better spent on like... A Ford Mondeo.

They do look nice enough though, the Mustangs...

I think I have the cheap one, but it's very fast.

Cars, kids, dogs, the fate of our souls, grandchildren, the countryside. I do so like substantial conversations. But, being forced to talk about the more banal things in life has lead me to a new way of thinking about how to approach the more substantial things. I do hope we can be friends, I really do, all of us. But we are fundamentally different, and there is no compromise. For me, to live and let live in this area of life is to hate those I would want to be friends with forever.

So, anyway! What's your favorite football team!  :)

Me too.  Those pooches are adorable and Katie certainly did clean up very nicely.  I like dogs well enough but I'm not up to caring for one full time, and I don't think it'd be fair to make a dog live in an apartment this small.  Besides, Deirdre can get frosty enough when I foster another cat for awhile, I would not want to get her started with a dog in the house.  However, I do help my girlfriend care for her dog, Sparkles, a perky little blonde cocker spaniel she rescued about 3 years ago.  (not too coincidently about the same time her daughter took off for college 2,000 miles away)

I also love the color blue, atho my favorite stone is turquoise, and Mustangs are my favorite cars but fortunately I'll never be able to afford one.  I tend to have a lead foot with just my bland little Saturn, I think a Mustang would just be a bridge too far for me.  I love reading and will read nearly anything (tho I'll admit to not being particularly partial to either gangster or war fiction), I enjoy writing a bit too but like proofreading even better and once spent 5 years serving as the beta for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan fic club.  More recently I've done a bit of beta'ing for True Blood fan fic writers.  You now know my darkest secret.

I've lived all my life in Southern California but am a bit of an Anglophile and would love to visit the United Kingdom.  I'm told we may still have relatives living in Scotland.  In the meantime, or more likely instead of, I enjoy going to English style tea rooms, of which there are an increasing number in the US and without meaning to I've begun collecting teapots.  I weeded them out at one point but I've noticed the collection has started to grow again.

Altho I enjoyed playing soccer in school (and like to think I was pretty good at it), I don't follow any kind of football these days.  Do like baseball but only if I can see a live game.  TV or radio just isn't the same.

Edward, thanks for telling us a bit more about yourself.

I also have a rescue animal...a gray cat of unknown breed rescued from a party my sister attended where mean boys were throwing him off the balcony.  I think my husband's siamese was a stray too.  Our dog was a purchase as I couldn't find the breed I wanted at a rescue at the time.

I also enjoy the color blue; I keep on decorating rooms in my house with blue as the main theme and only realized it after I had started the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living room all with a lot of blue.

We had a greyhound mix that loved to chase deer when we lived at the USAF Academy. Very nice dogs. We would have gotten a retired greyhound instead of the black lab we have, but where we are, frankly, they were a bit expensive to adopt.

It's good you saved the cat, and pet store dogs need homes, too, so kudos.

All this pet talk...loosing hate...must resist...one more dachshund and I'm done for!

I saw this in Real Simple magazine, I think it's just gorgeous:

That is nice.
Can we have grey ceilings now?
I would need a proper lounge though.

I would have to say that I prefer a nice brown on my walls. Especially if accented with a nice green like this.

Thanks for the nice comments one and all. I'm sure I'd posted those in the pets thread before?

My previous doggy 'Rusty', winter of 2010

I like how this thread turned into a thread about pets and interior. I do like that blue room though. My bedroom walls are a similar color to the ceiling.

Well what else should you discuss with the religious if you seek a productive exchange?
God?

I read a sci fi novel by a female author, she described the space ships decore in a girly manor, and she told us of her plans for a new girlier look.
And she talked too much about horses, it was annoying.  Sci fi is supposed to be about ion cannons and improbability drives, and robots.  Robots with an improbability drive and an ion cannon would be excellent.

There should also be aliens. Or cyborgs. Or both. All packing some portable beam weapon tech, of course.

What about alien robot horses with lasers on their heads?

So, anyway! What's your favorite football team!  :)

Manchester City. Whats yours?
Crow, you're a City fan :D me too!
After 30+ years of watching City struggle, it's great to finally have a team that can win things, and even better to have one that can thump United 6-1 at Old Trafford!

pretty...I've been putting off painting because we are renting (and painting them back to white when we move out possibly just a year form now is a pain) but I want to do something nice like that once we get our own place.

Maybe, but you're not allowed to do that fancy Nancy braiding of tail and mane.
And it can't be pink!
Black chrome would probably be best with toxic exhalations from its nostrils.

That's okay. I hate braiding for shows.  :D
Maybe it's mane could be made out of fire.
