Title: Chinchillas. Your take on them.
Post by: Simone on November 03, 2007, 03:33:47 PM
Well, I've been searching for the perfect pet for quite some time now. I went through two dogs (never quite worked out. Hey, I was really really young, it was too much responsibility) so we gave them away. I can't get a kitty because my mother's allergic to them, and another dog? I don't think so.

Anyways, I was walking along in the mall (fa, la la, la, la...) And something stopped me. It was possibly the most adorable thing. I approached the cage, and it read: "A: Chinchilla. C: Black. S: Male". OH YOUR GAWD! Dude, this was (Possibly) the cutest thing I had ever seen. So I went home searched up chinchilla, and I saw The most cutest thing. The Royal Persian Angora Chinchilla. Fancy name, for a fancy chinchilla. I was just wondering if you or someone that you know/knew had or has a chinchilla. What are they like? How expensive do you think that The Royal Persian Angora Chinchilla would be? Where do you think that I could get one? And dudes... Don't say Persia, because I ain't going there.

Thanks :)

You may want your mom to get allergy tested for chinchillas first.  I think chinchillas cost $300...they are kinda expensive; but very cute.

What about a hairless cat?

First off,

they're U.G.L.Y.

Secondly, she's not allergic to the hair itself, but it's something to do with the cats skin or something. Does that make sense?

Not to mention downright scary.

Yes, it makes sense.

Cat allergires are caused by the dander, the dead skin cells, like dandruff.

They are ugly....I thought they had been made so that they don't irritate those with cat allergies.

You should get a pet monkey :)

Even hairless cats don't alleviate allergic symptoms for people, because we aren't allergic to the hair, but to a protein in the cat's saliva (and some of the dandruff on their skin).

So besides being really ugly, hairless cats won't help cat allergy sufferers, for the most part.

Chinchillas are cool, but do some research first.   One of the sexes just goes nuts after reaching sexual maturity, but I can't remember which one.   Other than that, they seems to be really sweet furry things.   At least they were at the pet store i worked at.   If i remember correctly, chinchillas can be litter box trained and there are prepackaged specialty foods.  You'll need a cage about the size of a decent rabbit hutch, though.

You should be able to find regular grays for around 130 and cream/tan for 150 and up.  The Royal Persian is either a scam or ridiculously expensive.  I'm sure there are specialty breeders with websites, and i know for a fact that there are organizations of chinchilla breeders just as there are with dog breeders and other species.   Happy googling, lol.

They're really soft but not the most affectionate things... I considered getting one but got a ferret instead. Ferret's are a bit of work, but I've laughed with/ at mine more times than some of my friends.
