So I'm supposed to get interviewed for a co-op position that's located in Atlanta. I live in Virginia and I've never been there before, so I'm just curious as to what it's like there, particularly what it's like to live there. How are the people, how is driving around Atlanta, what are some things that I can do, areas to avoid, or anything in general?
Never ever mention Gen. Sherman.
I know the airport is one of the busiest in the world, and the busiest in the US, so if you're flying be prepared for that.
Other than that, all I know about it is from football or rap songs. ;D

I lived there for a few years and found that it was the probably the best major city to live in in America. I've lived in LA, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Orlando - and been to a lot more. By far Atlanta has them beat. Great Climate (almost as nice as LA most of the time). Nice People.
I lived just north of Atlanta in a city called Duluth. Nice place.
Also, Atlanta is the truest "melting pot of humanity" I have ever seen - and I was shocked to find that in the southern United States. Other cities talk about celebrating racial and cultural diversity, but Atlanta lives it. Likewise, here's a word of caution - never assume the Vietnamese man you are talking to is not married to a black woman, or the white guy you are talking to does not have both black, chinese and white children/relatives from several marriages, and so-on and so-on. Like I said, I have never seen a people take diversity so much to heart.
Hope this helps.
While you are there, visit Stone Mountain, just about a half hour east of the city. Large granite megalith with a bas-relief of some Confederate Civil War heroes carved in the side. (Not that you would agree with the sentiment displayed, just that it's interesting).
Also, I recommend eating at the revolving Sun Dial Restaurant atop the Westin Hotel - it's over 70 stories tall and provides a wonderful view of the city at night. Food is good, if a little pricey, but the experience makes it worth it.
I've only been in their airport. I have family that use to fly into Atlanta from Charlotte, NC just so they could go shopping so I'm assuming it's got some really nice areas.
I'm just wondering, how safe is Atlanta in general? Will I be fine walking down the street by myself at 2 AM or will I have to worry about getting mugged and/or pickpocketed? Also, how is the public transportation there?

I wouldn't walk around there at 2am, because it is a big, busy city similar to NYC.
I've visited both Atlanta and Tifton Georgia. Tiftoni s safer IMO cuz it's all small country.
