My name is Justin, and I've been an extremely staunch atheist for two years. I'm buried in the deep south, so just looking for a place to find like-minded people.
Welcome aboard! This is a great site, I think you will like it here.

Hi Jason
We have lots of your fellow 'Bible Belt' atheists here. They turn up regularly on atheist forums. It always makes me wonder what would happen if on of you went to church one day and at an appropriate moment stood up and said "I am an Atheist. I'm fed up of hiding this fact because of intollerent Christians." and then walk out. I wonder how many closet atheists would follow you then or in the weeks to come?
Welcome to HAF.
Regards
Chris
Welcome, Justin! You'll find plenty of support here.
Hallo! If you're looking for a sane place in this sea of crazy, you've come to the right place. ;D
So, got anything special about yourself you would like to share? Family, job, pets etc?
Hello Justin.
Hope we're like minded enough for you.
Willow.

Louisiana. It's not the worst as far as religiosity goes, but it comes close. I can't count the number of times I've been "rebuked in the name of Jesus" or some such nonsense.

Going to church has become basically insufferable since my (de)conversion. Most recently I watched a preacher inform a group of children that if they married outside the faith, they'd have Satan for a father in law. I wish I'd had the courage to get up and condemn that nonsense, and I like to think I might have (though I can't know for sure) had I not been sitting next to my extremely religious ex-girlfriend and her extremely religious family.

Thanks. I don't do much. I play a few instruments, but mostly I just write. Full time university student. How about yourself?
Thanks everyone else for the very cordial welcome. I'm becoming very active as a secularist and so far like this forum a great deal.

Oooh What do you play? I have absolutely no musical talent what so ever.
QuoteOooh What do you play? I have absolutely no musical talent what so ever.
I have played the piano since I was five, the guitar since I was ten, and the contrabass since I was eleven. I pick up instruments easily, but then I always get stuck in the "pretty good" category. My skill plateaus after eight or nine years, so I'm nothing exceptional.
I am also from the south and I can identify with what you're saying. It's always been socially unacceptable to be an atheist. I have been around it since birth.
I'm from Mormon land so I can identify. And yes standing up in church on the podium and saying the naughty word atheist would be epic. Haha the bitterness and irony of it all would be palpable. I just might im thinking. After all religious people are supposed to be the most understanding people in the world right? Haha! Not in their house

Yes, it's very frustrating, isn't it? It's so pervasive, you can hardly walk out of your front door without being hit in the face with a crucifix. I mostly stay indoors these days.

The tolerance and mercy of pious religious people tends to smell suspiciously like intolerance and condemnation.
And this:
