Article is a bit dated, so may be opening myself up to some ridicule here, but thought it was worth sharing as a positive model of an atheist and theist working together cooperatively as friends.

I hadn't been following the details of his cancer battle but teaming up with a christian he use to debate doesn't surprise me; I've come across a good handful of cases where two people who have debated each other end up becoming friends despite their disagreements.
Hitchens is still making appearances at events so I guess the treatment is at least slowing down the cancer's progression if not reversing it.

Also, if the doctor knows what he's doing, why not use him? I have a friend who's a devout Xtian and a rocket scientist -- I'd never ask him to pray for me but he's the first person I'd go to if I needed a rocket.

Yup...if someone is the best their religious beliefs don't matter.
I do, however, choose those who keep their religion to themselves over the overtly religious experts when all other things are equal. But that's when it just comes down to personal preference and not one I'd necessarily hold to as there could be situations where I was friends with the expert who happened to be really religious but I knew they wouldn't bother me about it..
