It's great that University caters for the imaginative types too. No point letting facts get in the way of a good education.
Welcome! Why did you choose religion?
Welcome. As you see, some here may not think philosophy and religion have value. However, I do, if studied within a scientific framework to understand more about how we humans got so damned superstitious! Certainly no OTHER answers there.
Otherwise, navel gazer is too kind a word. Though I did try it. It was the most fun while tripping.
Oh, I studied religion as a fundamentalist, then really studied it as an ex-fundamentalist. I'm sure your university would lean toward the latter.

Thanks.
Religion is a pretty important and fascinating subject.

What does Philosophy done under a scientific framework look like?

Religious Studies isn't Theology, I don't think fundamentalists think much of religious studies.
Welcome to the forum.
I'm not exactly sure why people began immediately piling up on you for what you study, but I found the responses somewhat rude, since this is an introduction thread. I hope that trend doesn't continue.
I hope you find this a good place to discuss all kinds of topics with other people and that you also get some benefit and satisfaction as a member of the Happy Atheist Forum.

I didn't find them rude at all :)
I actually like philosophy though my knowledge of it is superficial, and have an interest in the psychological and social aspects of religions (rather than their individual theologies). I look foward to your contributions to this forum, especially since I've never encountered an atheist with your interests before.
How would you describe your beliefs, if you don't mind my asking? ;D
Welcome, MrStakhanovite! I find it interesting that you chose to take religious studies. Were you an atheist when you chose that course? You said it's not theology; would it be more like comparative religion?

Great! Happy to know that. I may have read into them too much then.

HAF allows the same kind of free speech that is allowed in any civilized household...here are the rules: http://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/index.php?board=9.0 A nice explanation of the limits of how free your speech can be was provided in your introduction thread.

Righteous.

That is largely what Religious Studies is made up of, it's a inter-disciplinary area, where people combine the Social Sciences like Anthropology, Sociology, and Psychology with aspects of the Humanities like History and Philosophy.
Philosophy is my main interest, I typically deal in Logic and Metaphysics, which allows me to dabble in the Philosophy of Science and the Philosophy of Religion.
I spend a decent amount of time studying Christian Apologetics, and facilitating inter-faith events/dialogue.
Quote from: xSilverPhinx on September 25, 2011, 06:11:47 AMHow would you describe your beliefs, if you don't mind my asking? ;D
I'm a Philosophical Naturalist, but not a physicalist. I think Abstract objects exist like Numbers and Properties. Pretty friendly with religious people, have good friends that are Pastors or in seminary, grew up in a secular household, so I don't really have a negative background with organized religion that a lot of Atheists have, so that is probably why I'm comfortable moving in religious environments.

Comparative Religions is a good description, also covers the various ways one can study religion (Sociology for example), or history of a particular religion.
