Title: Guilty Pleasures
Post by: Sandra Craft on September 07, 2011, 08:33:19 AM
I was just sitting here, watching the latest episode of True Blood for the second time, and wondered if anyone else had shows they're at least a little embarrassed to watch but just can't quit?  I promise not to gossip about it.

Stargate can be pretty silly.
Dexter kills people, I shouldn't really like him.
I heard some one rate the gayness of the movie "The 300" at about 247 out of ten.  I didn't really notice.
The Spartacus TV series could be seen in a similar way I suppose.
I didn't have to feel guilty watching Buffy because the series merited much academic study about all sorts of issues and stuff.

It's pretty easy to pick anything apart but if you do that what are you going to watch?
Anyway, I'll be more faithful to reality when I get my new robot body and a faster than light speed Toyota.

True Blood is an absurd kind of fun. And if you think about it, as far as the number of concurrent plots goes, you're really getting a lot of bang for you HBO buck. Most shows have a main plot and a subplot, maybe a third, but True Blood, on a slow day, has like 30 plots going on simultaneously. In the last episode, just for good measure, they had Sherif Andy make love to like a fairy in the woods for absolutely no reason on top of the magic shop hostage situation, the Hoyt/Jessica breakup, the Jason/Jessica thing, the Pam's face melting thing, the Eric being angry at Pam thing, the Eric and Bill competing over Sookie thing, the Sookie being a fairy thing, the Marnie absorbing what'sjherface thing, the Brojo Jesus thing, the relationship between Jesus and Lafayette, the issue with Lafayette being a medium, the Tara being a reluctant lesbian thing, the whole deal with Sam finally meeting someone and possibly becoming a step-father thing, the Alcede dealing with the new pack thing, the new pack leader with Alcede's girlfriend thing, the pack leader also being Sam's new girlfriend's ex thing, the Bill had sex with his descendant thing, the fairies are insane monsters thing and I think there was a beat in there where Terry takes Andy out into the woods to detox off vampire blood. It's a lot to keep track of, and I'm sure I'm missing a lot, but the funny thing is that it's all just pretext for lots and lots of sex. It's like someone took Twilight and turned the dial from 4 up to 12.

Other guilty pleasure shows? Californication. The show is mental, but it has this incredible sense of humor about it that I'm addicted to.

I watched True Blood when we had hbo but we decided to cancel it and now have since canceled all cable...so any show I watch currently has to be available online for free or via netflix (I have been meaning to rent True Blood but currently we're going through the Rome series).

I have been watching Stargate all summer during my down time and have still not gotten through all of the sg-1 series and noticed there are a couple other versions of the show available too.
My husband and I watch Angel reruns together via netflix..it's a spinoff from Buffy but I never watched Buffy.  The plot lines really aren't all that different between stargate and angel except that one is about aliens and the other is about vampires...both are about the war between good and evil where the 'good guys' win despite insurmountable odds.  In other words, you don't have to think much to watch them but it fulfills any sci-fi need lacking in life.

I haven't watched it in a while, but I would have to say The Amazing Race. It's a reality show where a few teams race around the world, being free to form alliances, which they do, and therefore also make a few enemies. It's interesting to watch and fun to try and figure out which team might win based on each episode.

I do love the Dexter series. Michael Hall's portrayal of the likeable serial killer who agonizes over his own actions is darkly wonderful.

I also enjoyed Bryan Cranston's character in "Breaking Bad". A series about a terminally ill high school teacher turned meth cook.

I have no shame, so I watch anything from True blood to Gossip girl.  I didn't want to tell my gf I was watching Vampire diaries, but she caught me. xD meh, it was funny though, because we watched the last season together.

I love Dexter and can't consider it a guilty pleasure, the show is too damn good.  Whichever season Jimmy Smits was the guest killer in is my favorite.

Didn't Cranston win a couple of Emmys for Breaking Bad?  I never watched that one (premise too depressing) but have friends who practically went into mourning when they found out it was in the last season.

I stumbled across a few episodes of a rather obscure show that I couldn't help not watching, called Manhunt. It's basically a competition where a trained bounter hunter has to find a team within a certain time limit.

Also, shows about hoarders interest me.

Both aren't exactly the most productive shows around to watch, much less learning experiences, but I can't help myself. ;D

I just sat through the whole season one of the Borgias (2011) during the past two days. I'll definitely be watching season two.

(If I were Cesere Borgia, I would've gone with the French army, and maybe learnt something in the process... )

I watch Dexter, even though it's absurd, pretty much so I can perv over Michael Hall. Plus his internal dialogue is hilarious sometimes. There's a scene in the first episode where he looks at a cardboard box, formerly full doughnuts, and says "it's like me. Empty inside." He cracks me up.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is another one. Silly but addictive.

I couldn't get into True Blood because Sookie is too irritating. She annoys me so much it makes my bones hurt.

Ouran High School Host Club probably tops anything else. I don't know why I watched it, I just did. I know it's awful. My insane family made me do it. I was bribed. With priceless diamonds. They also told me if I didn't watch it they'd make me go to church. Forever. Without any clothes. Morbid curiosity. Stifling boredom. Leave me alone.

Hey, Ouran is awesome.  Especially if you're familiar with j-culture ,and get all the inside jokes.

I'm watching the live action drama now.

I'll agree that it can be a hilarious show.  My favorite bit was the time he was trying to decide whether or not to tell Deb he was the Bay Harbor Butcher, and imagining scenerios of her reaction, from her crying uncontrollably to hauling off and shooting him between the eyes without a word.

QuoteBuffy the Vampire Slayer is another one. Silly but addictive.

Also agreed -- most of Joss Whedon's work affects me that way tho for me the addictiveness factor ran Firefly, Angel, Buffy.

I watch around Sookie.  I think they could take her character off the show and I wouldn't even notice for a couple of months.

Makes me thankful I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about here.  Sounds like it beats my TB fixation all to hell.

It is hilarious yeah. Even without watching a lot of other animes and getting the 'in-jokes', all the visual humour still makes it worth it. But it's also incredibly garish, with one of the most mind-grating opening sequences of any anime, which is saying a lot. I made myself see past that because my sister told me it was good, and I trust her taste in these things. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have been able to. I'd have assumed it was one of those moneymakers that exist solely to provide hypothetical yaoi pairings to deranged fangirls, and a platform for bad writing on the internet. There are plenty of those around.

It's a shame they stopped Firefly - I was getting into that. Now that my brain is on anime, and if you haven't already, you should check out Cowboy Bebop. It's the show that Firefly wanted to be, effectively. You can tell Joss Whedon was a big fan.

Well, it's loosely based off real host clubs in japan.

And you don't need to watch other animes, just know about japan culture and society.  Even without that knowledge, I found it amusing.

Hey! Ouran and Hetalia don't count! Our history teacher told us to watch it so we could get more familiar with WWI. And our Japanese teacher had us read and watch Ouran to help us learn the language better. Personally, I don't think I really have a guilty pleasure show... But I love Criminal Minds. :)

I love that anime to death. *buries face in keyboard*

Also Sailor Moon. The awful, awful DiC dub from when I was a kid. When I'm really bored and need a laugh, or I need background noise for another task, that's what I watch.

Uhh. And magical girl anime in general. Mmmm... Pretear.

Are you kidding?! The fandom was huge and it still is. It was pretty much the Biggest Thing Ever in Japan during its time, and it was popular enough in America that they're re-releasing the English version of the manga.

But yeah, it is addictive, even though the anime is kind of terrible. Logically I should hate it... but it's so sparkly...

Reid and Garcia are by far my favorites, since I can relate to them the most, but if I had an hour alone with Hotch.... Especially in the Season 7 opener when he was all scruffy... It looked good on him.

Well, I have to confirm the TV show Grimm as a new guilty pleasure.  The people behind it were also part of BtVS, and the humor is similar.  The premise is completely silly: the monsters written about in the Grimms Bros. fairy tales are real and there are hereditary monster hunters, called Grimms, who protect humans from them.  Like I said, silly, but also fun.

I think they calmed to find 8oz (226.7gr) in the first season. They also clamed to spend well over $275,000. in equipment, fuel and other costs for what amounted to just a few thousand dollars of gold.
If they start finding gold I may lose interest. It's the darker side of my nature that makes me watch. I enjoy watching them fail. ::)

Ancient Aliens

best docucomedy ever

Aside from both true blood and vampire diaries, i normally stick to cartoon network or anime.  i have lost a few lifetimes watching dragonballz. im happy to watch adventure time or regular show, but also sit down for ed edd eddy or camp lazlo.  and also sailor moon, inuyasha, ghost in the shell, bleach, .hack, paranoia agent, trigun, fullmetal alchemist, fooly cooly, code geass, hamtaro, shin chan.

am i supposed to be guilty of something?
