We have a Dr Who thread, so why not a Star Trek one?
What do you love/hate about ST?
Off the top of my head to get the ball rolling...
Love:
Vision of the future
Adventure
Science!
Discovery
New alien foreheads every week
Holodecks, Transporters, Phasers, Warp, etc...
Hate:
Comparing Kirk and Picard
The name "Janeway"
That DeepSpace 9 had "Trek" in the title, but didn't go anywhere
LikeSpock
T'pol
Warp Drive
Transporters
Phasers
Tribbles (Awwwww)
The Horta (Awwwww)
NCC-1701
DislikeNelix (The Bar Rodent)
Riker!! I wouldn't trust him to park my car, let alone fly a starship!
Janeway, make that Voyager, the low point IMO
The Borg, when they are depicted as dumb to suit the plot.
Never got in to the shows much, but liked the recent movie remake.
I particularly liked the new Uhura...

I adore Star Trek. I love the size of the universe, and that because it comes from many different minds, there's something for everyone. I love that even though some of the science is only there for the sake of the plot, they actually do really try to put speculative science into the show and they bundle it with hope. I love that it's so aspirational. I love how even though the characters are living 10 lifetimes in the future, I can relate to them. And I love the decontamination chamber on the NX-01.
I'm not wild about Voyager.

My favorite scifi series of all time~ *____*

Romulons (the race and their awesome ships)

In general, I just adore star trek. It's imaginative, fun, and just everyone can get into it. I love The Next generation the best. The holodeck is still an idea I am looking forward to in the future. Except when it glitches, and bullets become real. D:
So I have this buddy that looks like a Star Trek character. Big ears, pronounced forehead and eye bone, pointy teeth. Someone pointed it out once and that's all I see when I see him is the guy from Star Trek...
Which one is that?
Waiting to see how the unknown guy on the away mission would die was always fun.
I'm glad Kirk was named after Cook and not Cortez.
I didn't like Data being destroyed but who knows, he may be retrieved one day.
There is no doubt, the Star Wars Death Star wouldn't stand a chance against a Borg cube, I'm not going to discuss it.
This kind of makes sense -
QuoteThe "official" (accepted) explanation is that in the time of the Enterprise's voyages under James Kirk, The Klingons encountered were from outlying Klingon colonies, where interbreeding and assimilation of other cultures was more prevalent than on the Klingon home world. The fullblood Klingons were encountered later, as the Federation spread through the galaxies.

I don't know specifically the one character's name who you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure it's a Ferengie (or something like that, probably spelled it completely wrong but don't feel like googling.)
Then again, I might be way off course.
Yeah, this guy. A Ferengi.

Always have a place in my heart for Trek. I did see some of the original series on NBC as a kid, but I believe just the last season. I did see it over and over as soon as it went into syndication and have seen every episode of TOS and TNG numerous times.
Do not like anything about DS9. Hated Janeway from Voyager but lusted after Seven of Nine. Never watched more than one or two of Enterprise episodes.
Built scale models of every version of Enterprise (including C, which I particularly like). Most have lights, or had lights. Also built scale models of other ships from movies and series.
I've had lots of trek books, props, pics, etc., including an autographed poster from Wrath of Khan (Shatner and Dee Kelly). Never went to a convention though.
I was very influenced by Trek and still am. I love cutaway diagrams and have several from various Trek ships.
So, yeah, big Trek fan, to include an LCARS display on my iPad!
I'm old enough to remember watching Classic Trek in its first run. When the first movie came out, I thought it just so-so, but excited to hear another would be coming out. Around 1990, a friend and I started my city's first (and only) fan club (was Captain of USS Starfire for 2 years)after we met at a convention in the Detroit area. Of course, several of the movies (I think up to ST 5) and STTNG had been going for about 3 years. We went to several conventions, have met all the Classic Stars and all the STTNG stars except Will Wheaton. I've eaten lunch with Shatner and accidentally groped Nichelle Nichols boob...*smiling fondly*. I was the only one at a convention that got Gates McFadden's autograph for free on a poster. I've presented all the stars I've met with rather expensive pens engraved with "Thanks from USS Starfire". I have so many books and other junk...some signed. I'm getting ready to offload all my ST stuff. I could use the money.
Hell, I even have a box of Cheerios (never opened) from the late 80's when they ran a promotion...*laffin*
Here is where it gets strange for me. And I don't remember the time lines all that well.
When STTNG came out, I thought it was fantastic, but couldn't stand the 'in-show' music. I still cringe when I hear it. I never saw the last season because I was totally bored with the character generation plots of the season before. When I come across a STTNG episode, I can't be bothered to watch it. It's funny how many of them were not so cheesy when they first came out.
Anyone remember...
Geordie and the Paclids???
Doctor Pulaski?
Lieutenant Reginald Endicott "Broccoli" Barclay III?
Wesley saving the ship every other episode?
Riker and Troi?
Worf and Troi? (BTW, She's so much more beautiful in person than on the show)
Worf and Alexander?
Tasha and Data?
Still to this day I don't like any other Trek...DS9, Voyager, Enterprise. Every one of them had great potential, especially Enterprise. But they ruined all of them.
I liked every one of the Classic Trek Movies, yeah, even the cheesy ST 5. I don't particularly care for the STTNG movies because they had the 2 hour TV movie quality about them...however, I did like Nemesis enough to get a DVD of it.
The odd thing is that I went from a nut job trekkie to...*shruggin shoulders I really don't care*...until...
The last movie. Loved it. Fantastic. Can't wait for next years sequel.
Really liked the old star trek with Kirk and the crew.
Dislike the new with Picard, it was too PC and too much of a drama.
Quite liked Voyager, reminded me a bit of old star trek, but still too much drama in it.
Being a fan of Reading Rainbow is how I got into enjoying Star Trek. LaeVar Burton was my hero when I was little and Reading Rainbow did a Star Trek episode because of him.
I probably watch an episode of Star Trek daily. They play TNG one nightly way late at night. Plus they have the different versions of the tv series on Netflix.
I love love love Mr Spok. I mean he was THE original goth kid with those skinny black pants and hot boots! I also loved Data and the relationship he had with Tasha. I really missed her.
I wish I guess they had given Captain Picard a long lasting love interest.

ST:TNG Does look cheesy to me now when I catch the odd episode on occasion. Something about the way it was filmed gives it a "low rent" look, even with fancier sets than TOS had. I guess things just look better on film.
I so remember everything on your list. I really like Barclay's episodes, especially "The Nth Degree".
Dr. Pulaski was a totally needless character who should have never been put in the show (I know why the producers did it, but it's lame).
Every time I hear Marina Sirtis speak, I think, "Why does she sound so strange?" because I'm always expecting to hear her "Troi" voice! Lol
I love Broccoli xD
Marina Sitris is so pretty! I had a mega crush on her when I first got into TNG.

Do not like anything about DS9.
That show makes me wonder how long it lasted. The premise was good, but without really going anywhere, it turned into a soap. This show was my least favourite and least remembered; I'm now looking it up. I couldn't even remember the Ferengi's name...Quark. I think I got 2 seasons into it and the left. It was interesting to see Nana Visitor play a small role in Battlestar Galactica.
QuoteHated Janeway from Voyager but lusted after Seven of Nine.
Same here. I don't know how many times we saw Janeway weep in the first season, which really was the reason I turned away from the show. And I got really tired of 7of9 wearing the same clothes and such beauty with no emotion. Tuvok and a holographic doctor was lame. I gave this one about 3 seasons and gave it up.
QuoteNever watched more than one or two of Enterprise episodes.
This is the show that had such promise. But it never really took off. And I quit watching when I saw Nazi tanks sitting outside the White House.
QuoteBuilt scale models of every version of Enterprise (including C, which I particularly like). Most have lights, or had lights. Also built scale models of other ships from movies and series.
Same here. I tried to bash an A type to make Reliant before Reliant models came out. Well, I bashed it all right! The A types are my fav.
I think my least favourite parts of Trek is the convenience and overuse of time travel.
[rant]
The thing that really, really, fucking really pissed me off about Voyager was this. One gets stuck 75 years from home, one has no idea if one will find a short cut. What is the first thing one should do? One starts cross training one's whole crew. One has no idea whatsoever who will be killed in the next 75 years although one can bet somebody will be. The ship would also need a three shift system to function as there is no night-time in space. So the series missed a huge plot hole that would have given a great potential for crew interactions. And they could have killed off major characters after a while as there would be a person trained to take their place. They never really dealt with the details of a generational ship either. And 'Chuckles', what a lame arsehole; he was supposed to be a resistance fighter FFS!!
And bloody Janeway 'I'll do anything to get this crew home!' all Q wanted to do was shag her FFS, but would she 'take one for the crew!"' would she fuck? No she fucking wouldn't! It's not like she was a bloody virgin either.

I agree with this sentiment.
If you fail to change something through time travel why not keep trying until you succeed?
I enjoyed Next Gen and
All subsequent series at the time, maybe futuristic film dates fast.

Thanks I needed that.
Even at its worst Star Trek was better TV than most of the other output around. Despite the niggles I do like Star Trek and TOS was a formative TV programme of my youth. SiFi should stretch the mind and on a good day Star Trek did exactly that!
Lol@Tank. *makes you tea*
Yeah, Voyager was pretty terrible. I'm biased with Next Gen though, because I felt that series had the crew with the best characters and chemistry.
Troi is sexy~ <3

Troi did a couple of very soft core movies in her youth and one where she was a witch, I'll leave you to Google for that if you like ;D
Oh, and Nichelle Nichols also got her kit off before she was famous.

And laffin my ass off!!!
That was class Tank!
I love the adventurous spirit of the original show, and there's so much sword play in it that if you watch enough episodes with sword fighting back to back you might easily conclude that the show is a "sword and planet" genre show, rather than science fiction. I grew up with TNG. I didn't follow DS9 after a certain point, and jumped ship on Voyager even earlier (I came back to watch the Borg episode, and to see Seven occasionally). When Enterprise was coming, I thought to myself, "Okay guys, go watch as many Space Program movies as you can, The Right Stuff, Apollo 13, ect. Think 'space cowboys.'" It was only at the end of Enterprise's second year that they picked up on that, and I saw the episode I had been waiting for, long overdue. Definitely didn't hold back on the "new" technology, they just kept using it like in the other show. Not retro enough. The new movie and it's continuity has a lot of promise.
Tank, you called it on Voyager, there were issues there. This is the kind of thing that made the newer Battlestar Galactica leap at my throat from the TV. The writing team partly came from the ST writing team, and there are episodes and story threads that echo ST episodes taken to the next level. BG did it's own version of the paranoid military trials of "The Drumhead" from TNG, and then they laid down the law and declared, "Expect the unexpected." Plenty of people are killed, and new characters are introduced, regularly in an organic storytelling fashion. The ship's hull get's blackened during a major battle halfway through the show, and it looks charred for the rest of the show! It's like the writers took their pent up creative energies and opened up on everything they had to hold back on with their ST work.
I still love ST, just as it is. Great stuff.

I love BG. I'm a picky bugger when it comes to a lot of things and only very rarly do I not find plot holes. BG was so plot hole free I stopped looking and just enjoyed it. Simple things like damping down sounds when in space. The way the ships manouver is also critical. Space craft don't bank to turn and when did a space craft in ST simple turn upwards (or downwards) an head off somewhere? You'd think space was 2 dimensional if you just watched ST.

I'm currently wathing the new Star Trek movie on Netflix streaming. I saw it at the movies. But now I can catch all the fun things I missed the first time. Most notably the cheesy fight music and the sad poor red enson. He even had a red enson computer avatar. He was doomed from the get go.

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn, at the end when Kirk and Spock were talking about how Kahn may be smart but with his limited space flight experience, he's treating the battle as if it were 2 dimenstional. So Kirk pulled a 3 dimenstional maneuver and gained the upper hand.
Quote from: TankWho likes Galaxy Quest? I do :D
I loved that movie, the Dalmations or Termites or whatever were a good example of non-human looking things (their real tentacled form). Tony Shalhoub's engineer character was my favourite, then Guy.
Also on topic: I liked all the Star Treks. Even though Voyager is at the bottom of my Star Trek list, it's still higher on my list than most shows. It shows an optimistic future for humanity (in spite of all the total destructions and wars that were narrowly avoided). I wasn't a fan of the idea that all the main aliens in TNG were all related genetically. I did like Q and the Borg. One thing that always irritated me was that flying ships into borg ships always did some major damage, yet they kept trying to modulate their beam frequencies so they could "FAAR MAH LAZORS!", instead of going with what worked (sending big heavy things into the Borg ships).
Were the aliens genetically related in TNG?? I did not know that. I only knew Romulons and Vulcans were.
Oh, did anyone ever see the NG ep where there was a planet runned by "god" who happened to be a giant floating machine? All the people were dressed in roman style tunics, and creepily overily jubilant??

See you after the jump!
Left out cuz I havent seen BSG yet xD
I watched the pilot for the original ST when it first aired and I was so happy -- SF, every single week! Altho all the Treks had their shortcomings, I didn't really hate any of them since they all pandered to my biggest fantasy of living in space, and living with aliens. To be transported every week into a life where that was happening I could (and did) overlook a lot. I ditto whoever complained about the PC level, that was the thing that always irked me the most too.
