I am author of an anti-religious novel - The Second Advent: Disciples. I was raised in a Baptist family. After several years of "indoctrination" I finally succumbed to the pressure of parents, relatives and friends to join the "fold" and was baptized at the ripe old age of 13; two years later, I'd had enough.
Until a few years ago, the pot had been simmering on low heat; I avoided most discussions/arguments with religious folks (mostly Christian) while sucking in the constant haranguing about Jesus and God (I needed in my life) and sin and hell (I was big-time, and destined to burn for eternity), until finally the kettle boiled over. Since then, my life has been enlightening and I no longer shy away from confrontation with those that try to push their religion on me.
With one financial crises after another, terrorism in the name of God, extreme right politicians moving to the fore of national politics, it's far past time for those of us who know religion for what it truly is to stand up and stop the BS.
"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." Seneca.
