Title: Hello
Post by: Wrat on August 08, 2011, 04:41:36 AM
I thought I'd attempt to find some friends in the Atheist community. It seems that every time I post something Atheistic on my facebook, I get ganged up upon my the religious folk in my life with no one backing me up. That got old and drove home that I don't really know any Atheists besides myself anywhere, let alone facebook.

So, hi.

I'm a little too pessimistic to be a Humanist, and not quite quick on my feet enough to be an effective rationalist (in person).

Welcome to HAF.

You don't have to be quick on your feet to be a rationalist...I think that term just applies to someone who value rational thinking.

If you are looking for a label other than or in addition to atheist then skeptic or freethinker might be what you would find fitting; and both include the idea of valuing rational thought.

Hi Wrat

Glad you found your way here and joined in. You'll find plenty of knowledgable people here who are used to debating theists if that's what you want to learn about. Do tell us a bit about yourself, it's always nice to meet new folks.

Welcome to HAF.

Regards
Chris

Welcome!

The way I see it, my atheism is a direct result of my skepticism and freethought. Those two words are actually better descritions if you're trying to avoid the negative stigma and generalised ignorance surrounding the label 'atheist'.

It's been quite some time since I've missed a new episode of the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe. I also recently discovered Skeptoid.
I also enjoy the youtube atheists, until they break down into bitching about other youtubers.

Actually, what set me on the road to Atheism good and proper was a reaction I had to some antidepressants I used to be on. For a few hours I saw the world with absolutely no emotion or sentimental attachment to anything. A cold, robotic look at everything. I was taking a philosophy class at the time, naturally my mind turned that way at one point.

When the effects of the meds wore off, I rushed to the doctor to change my prescription (though a piece of me wishes I could think with that level of clarity again) and I found myself to be a born-again Atheist. That was the fall of '08.

So far, in my experience,  think that is a unique reason for becoming an atheist!

Welcome to HAF!
you don't need religious folks on your fb.

The more athiests and free thinkers we have in the world, the better.

Agreed on the second point, but as for the first, they are simply as family to me. We get along great except for this one thing. They've even taken me in during some of the harder points in my life.

Them and a psycho ex-girlfriend that tries to save my soul from time to time. I don't befriend her because I find her attempts amusing.
