Hello all, My name is Thom and I live in the buckle of the Bible belt. I have tried for many years to live the life that religion offers, but over the past few years, have begun to question many of the ideas and beliefs. I am a firm believer in science and mankind. The majority of the people in my area, seem to be confused as to what I mean, they just all nod and say, "ah, Athiest".
I didn't know what it meant to be an Athiest, but I researched it, and it seems to fit perfectly. I have given this many years of thought, and it's time to stop kidding myself. I hope that I can find a community here that I can get to know and find solace in. I'm swimming in a sea of fanatics and need some more like minded people.
Hope you have room for one more. :)
Thom
hi, welcome to haf.
There's always room for one more in the hot tub, my friend.
Wow, that was a fast welcome. Way to make me feel at home lol.
I really look forward to getting into some serious discussion on the topic of Theist vs. Athiest. I have so many questions, but I'm sure I can be a valuable member if this forum, so thanks again. :)
Welcome comrade!! I am new too. I have read some great discussions in this forum. Can't wait for the time to join one. I am not sure how I will get 50 posts in this part of the forum but I'll give it a shot. I hope 50 people join soon so I can greet them! :-)
lol, that's one way to get to the 50 I suppose. :)
I agree with you. I have been pouring over post after post, and there are friendly, informative people here. I think it is nice that this place was made for people to kind of, get away for a while, and be with like minded individuals. Can't wait to read more. :)
Hi Thom
Well it's good to see another person find their way out from under the comfort blanket of institutionalised superstition (aka religion). Welcome to HAF. I hope you find what you are looking for here.
Regards
Chris
Don't forget you can post in the Laid Back Lounge (LBL) and all the various threads in there.
Thanks Chris, I didn't know that I would post else where.
I've only just, truly, begun my journey, but I know I will meet people here to support me every step of the way. :)

Yes, I would think you'll find a sympathetic atmosphere here as many of the membership have been through a version of what has happened to you. Personally I have never believed in the supernatural so I always find the de-conversion stories I read here fascinating, profoundly shocking and inspiring.

There are some members here who are, as yet, still held in the thrall of institutionalised superstition. Try not to let them get you down.
Welcome!
Following a light beam? ;D
I wouldn't say that I'm superstitious really. I have my own beliefs, no.. theories, as to why things in the world happen, and non of them revolve around deities, that's for sure, lol. Everything happens for a reason, but it's based in science, not in religious beliefs.
An example being, I think there are ghosts, as I have seen some. Do I think these are spirits of people that have died? Absolutely not. Nothing is certain, but I think that when someone see's a ghost, what is actually happening is they are witnessing a time warp of sorts. Actually seeing the past, and in stronger instances, even able to interact to a point. So on our end, a window into the past, and on the 'ghosts' end, a window into the future. There is so much about time we don't understand yet, I really think this is a possibility.
Anyway, I said all this so you can get a feel for how I think. I am very scientific minded and I need proof before I commit to an idea. If not proof, then viable evidence that is grounded in reality.
And to xSilverPhinx, I guess that one went over my head, but thanks for the welcome. :D
Welcome! It's great to have so many new members joining this week. Hope you reach 50 posts soon.

I hope I hit them soon too.
I wonder if the boom in new members had anything to do with the failed Doomsday? :D
Lol, who knows? I look forward to the fail of Oct 21, 2011 and Dec 2012.
I think the Dec 2012 will be a pivotal point. So much has be circling around that date. I am anxious to see how the world will react when the date comes and goes, which it will. The Mayan's descendants have even said so.
I think there will be a lot of religious people grasping for explanations when this rolls around. I just wonder how many will panic, sell all their belongings, and leave their families this time.
I'm just glad i'm a lot smarter now. About five years ago, my idiot dad told me about 2012, and I cried all week. I figured out a lot of the bs months later, but that was the worst week ever.
I still seriously hate my idiot father for putting me through that.
I hope there will be a gatherinf party, so reasonable people can laugh as once again, religious zombies give away their earthly posessions. They should give them to me.
That is horrible. I, as a father, would never tell my children things to scare them. It is a tactic that has been handed down through religion for centuries, and I will not entertain the idea.
As for the theists giving all their worldly possessions away, I think that is a bit contradictory. If they give it to someone who will be raptured (sounds a lot like a violation :D ) then there is no point. If they give it to a member of the damned, then they won't have time to enjoy it, what with the torture and all.
It never fails to amaze me, the faith that theists exhibit. They prepare for these events, and when nothing happens, they just shake it off. Makes me think of a child, watching the sky, waiting for Santa to show up. They stay up all night and don't see a thing and say, "Oh well, maybe next year".
I think as people in this modern world get more informed about the world we live in, religious people are questioning their faith more and more. As I said, I feel that these failed doomsday predictions are going to rock the religious world, especially Christianity, to it's core. It will be an exciting time, that's for sure.
Then again, I could be wrong. Good old Mr. Camping will probably just come out and say he miscalculated...again...and his followers will buy into it. ::)
