Title: Interactive Painting Thread
Post by: original_gender on May 18, 2011, 12:44:07 AM
Edit (5/27/11): Anyone with even a pinch of artistic inclination is welcome to enrich this thread with their own interpretations of the suggestions posted here. If enough people start participating, maybe we'll end up with our own version of "DrawerGeeks!". I always thought that project was lacking something; maybe our flagrant irreverence for religion will take their good idea and make it a little more interesting.

I recently did a project involving Craigslist that I think went well, and I'd like to replicate the concept here. The only difference is, I think there is probably enough intelligence among us that we can come up with more interesting content than just portraiture (so please, no portrait requests).

Here is the game:

Tell me what to paint. I probably won't be able to keep up with every suggestion, so I will be gravitating towards ideas that I haven't already seen in some form or another – absurd is good, but keep in mind I will only be able to post images that are safe for work in order to comply with the forum rules. I would prefer to avoid rendering trademarked material, but I will remain open minded. If I don't paint your idea, it doesn't necessarily mean that I don't like it.

Examples:

- Barry Manilow being dissected by a dolphin wearing a lab coat.
- Jesus being offered a can of generic brand lemon lime soda by kindhearted Romans.
- Aliens attempting to play cats cradle with a domestic cat.
- A group of ecstatic children playing in rainbow colored radioactive fluid.

I probably won't do anything conspicuously political, because I don't care for political artwork.

Let's have some fun!

The FoF fish walking out of the ocean onto land snacking on religion found laying on the shore.

btw, if you are so inclined you can post links to NSFW images as long as they are clearly labeled as such; they just can't be imbedded into the forum (intent is to make the forum as work safe as possible, not to bar stuff entirely that would be inappropriate for work)

How about a picture of God smacking an evolutionist so hard, it turns him back into a monkey?

I'm not entirely sure what a FoF fish is, so you'll have to pardon me if I am completely off in my depiction (I made an educated guess). Also, I added a little yellow bird friend and gave him a sweet muscly arm like Trogdor. I wasn't sure how to personify religion, so I just took the opportunity to pick on Jesus. Other than that, you are the brains behind this nonsense.  :)

I'm really excited for you. Having an apostasy is like discovering the taste of oxygen. Stick to it pal, and remember: if there really is a God, reading a book or two to develop a familiarity with the reasoning of his enemies will only strengthen your faith.

Very good, Jesus hates it when he is portrayed with dark hair.
Yellow and blue works so well together, it must be right.
Yellow tail, blue fish body, yellow Jesus, divine symmetry.

I probably should have said repetition, but I don't think you can have divine repetition.
Although there is that stand up, sit down, kneel, stand up, sit down, kneel, stand up, sit down, kneel, stand up, sit down, kneel, stand up, sit down, kneel, stand up, sit down, kneel, stand up, sit down, kneel, stand up, sit down, kneel...

Thanks, guys. I resized the image, so if it was being cropped because of the resolution of your monitor (it was on this computer), just hit refresh.

What am I painting tonight? This is fun.

oooo good thread.

I would like to see a literal interpretation of a quote from an earlier post of yours (in another thread) which goes "we are the mold growing in the universe's neglected coffee filter".

I have to tell you, I very much enjoyed being quoted. So, thank you. Here is your painting:

I tried to be as literal as possible (per your request), but then my poor cat came floating into the scene sporting a bottle of booze (purr his request) – so I thought, eh, let's spice things up with an extraterrestrial dinosaur.

Thank you, I'm glad you like them. I'm having a lot of fun with these.

To answer your question, I do graphic work for an an auction house (billboards, marketing materials, photography, et cetera). I supported myself selling paintings for three or four years after high school but the necessity of making sales really took the fun out of it.

Lol your paintings make me imagine that you are really fit.

Can you do a girl surfing on snow in a rain storm? (Just because I'd want to print it and put it on my wall) Or does it have to be atheistic?
Otherwise maybe Carl Sagan's quote which is in my post signature thingy?

Do you have a website where you sell your art?  If so feel free to post it.

Btw, the HAF fish is the thing in my avatar...if you want to do another haf one that is oriented to fit on a web banner I could incorporate it into the website when I fix up the style.  Inspiration:  see mission statement http://www.happyatheistforum.com/

Choose any of the following that strikes your fancy (or none):
Horus vs. Jesus in the style of Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter
An octopus playing piano, having a sword fight, posting on a forum, and sewing
Zombie Gap cashier
Carl Sagen drinking a cup of coffee, reading the Bible, and chuckling to himself smugly
Teenage Mutant Ninja Accountants
A wall separating church and state

You're a really gifted artist. Keep up the amazing work!

I'm extremely flattered by the feedback, guys. I have to warn you though, I am ravenous for primary narcissistic supply (seeing that my peers have all become deaf to the frequency of my speech), so I will probably tug this boat until you are all nauseous with boredom.

I have to apologize on behalf of my cat. I don't think he even tastes it anymore. I know the snow looks a lot like water, but I live in South Florida (a peninsula state within walking distance of the equator [if you are an ant that happens to be traversing the surface of a map]) so please don't hesitate to divvy out some slack.

What media do you work in, is it mainly digital or do you work in oils/acrylics?

Oh, good. Well, she certainly isn't centerfold material but she has a lot going against her: she is harboring a partially developed marine biologist in an abdomen that appears to be lacking some fundamental components, she was haphazardly rendered with a candid disregard for human proportions, and she is attempting to pull off a yellow outfit out of season (not to mention her misallocated bust would benefit greatly from a brassier).

Methinks I have a new favorite poster on this site. Not often someone comes along in the anonymity of the interwebz and impresses me so much. You got some serious talent.

I'd like to see a procession of religious sheep/people following jesus/moses/allah/mohammed/pope palpatine/etc... off a cliff into the ocean, ala lemmings.

Edit: Also, Einstein/Hawking/Dawkins/etc... in the background facepalming.

You want ridiculous, huh?

Here's some religious-themed nonsense:

The four horsemen of the apocalypse getting a ride in the back of a hillbilly's pickup truck as he hunts out the window with a double barrel shotgun

An anthropomorphic peanut lecturing the Pope on table manners

A Muhammad blimp flying over the streets of London

A demonic pony watching Tron/Transformers/Thor/whatever in 3D, people in white robes getting ready to attack with holy water

Your website really isn't hard to find, though:

If the link being up bothers you in any way, just ask and I'll edit it out (or Whitney could, too, if she was so inclined).

How do you know that is his?  There are similarities but if that is his website than his quick work takes on a more playful character than larger pieces.

Thank you, no, I'm really enjoying everyone's ideas. I just think of my website as being embarrassingly business oriented and a little self-aggrandizing. I would delete it again if I had any self-respect, but the woman that sells my paintings demands I have one, and I let her boss me around because she helped me out of a tough spot last year, lol.

By the way, I think I'm going to do your table manner ideas after Ihateyoumike's sheeple suicide movement.

...the main problem with me participating being, of course, the fact that I don't have a drawing tablet and still suck at pastel, so the only thing I can do right now that I'm actually competent at would be pencil lines.

I can probably still produce something worthwhile, though.
Here's my most recent work with pastel:

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fth03.deviantart.net%2Ffs70%2F150%2Ff%2F2011%2F141%2Ff%2F6%2Fpastel_1_by_hereticalrants-d3gw29l.jpg&hash=9eb1c124da521b06ddb0d181b8ac43e6b7eb939d)
My prompt will be whatever the forum agrees is the most interesting way to depict an ear eating its own face (or the next suggestion that interests me. Either one).

I know there are a lot of talented artists on these boards, too, so it could get really interesting if we could get more of them involved, and maybe make some kind of game out of it.

That cat's a super villain, he's leading them all to ruin.
That cat's a hero ridding us all of bleating believers.
I wonder how often he's used that lead them over the cliff and grab the stick trick?

Question though, are those hairy balls growing out of the bottom of jesus's horn?

He's playing the balls flute. It is a particularly difficult instrument to play properly. I always thought it would be easy until I vanquished a bottle of gold label with a guy I used to be in a band with and woke up with a bruised throat. True story.  :-\

I've seen different treatments of this thing.
I don't think I've ever seen one with a priest appearing on the back of man at some point.
I'd like to see a straight backed primate/man and then a bent backed one carrying a priest/god.

I made this post a little while ago, not as complicated as most suggestions but priest jockeys would have other possibilities.  There could be spectacular cavalry charges, or sharp slaps with crop for the prophylactic reaching hand.

SUGGESTIONS!!! ;D >:( ;D

Last night I got drunk and drew a pony, but tonight I'm definitely doing something for this thread. 3hrs+ of me trying to figure out how to paint with oily chalk.

Priest-jockey could be interesting. I'll do some concept sketches on my lunch break. If I'm not as good as Matt, that just means I have to try harder, right? :P

Jesus rode donkeys which are much like ponies.
Then he left them to the cruel hands of men.
Is heaven open to ponies, NO I don't think so.

I heard somewhere, not sure where but I'm sure it was beyond doubt that horses were heading towards extinction at man's hand, then man discovered he could sit on them.

I think the time has come for angry ponies.

Yeah, the Priest-Jockey idea is really funny.

If you get frustrated with pastels (they are kind of messy for someone accustomed to digital platforms) you should try these:  http://www.prismacolor.com/products/art-markers/double-ended (http://www.prismacolor.com/products/art-markers/double-ended). They are nice and graphic and they come in a wide spectrum of colors.

I have a lot of those because we used them for renderings in architecture studio.  I never was very good with them though so I mainly used them for outlining and filled in with colored pencil then switched to digital as soon as we were allowed to do so.

Pastels and I never got along very well either...I do a lot better with things I can erase or that look good if they are messy.

Alright everyone, I changed the name of this thread in the hopes of catching the attention of potential participants. I also added a little blip in the OP encouraging people to jump in. Even if you don't have much skill of hand, or your preferred medium is MS paint, it would be fun to see how other people's minds construct some of these ideas – stupid and funny will always be preferable to laborious and mediocre.

Speaking of ideas, we need some more.

Only if it is consensual or they have been very naughty monkeys.
Monkie does = monkey doesn't it?
It's not some kind of religious devotee with a severe hair cut is it?
The answer wouldn't change however you define monkie, the consensual/naughty rule would still apply.

Interesting, it answers my questions but so many more are posed.

Did drinking cats evolve from drinking flowers, or did they recognise competition and extinguish them?
Or did the flowers die attempting late night trips to the bottle shop?

It is pleasing that the post theist human enjoys the fruits of technology and isn't kicked out of any garden.
Annoying Environmentalist: Yes but your lifestyle might see the Earth shrug you off.

The evolution from stiletto to sensible red shoe, to sock to cosy brown shoe is puzzling.
Does our attraction to impractical footwear derive from this disturbing ancestor?

And the devil arising from a dinosaur's nostril, this idea will keep the theologians arguing.
It could even hasten their demise.

Dahli Lama is taking a pool shot with cigarette stowed, smoldering above his ear, it appears he is mouthing some words, he has a skanky looking young woman with too much make up, long blonde hair, white tank top and extremely tight jeans waiting for him on his side of the table, she is looking intently at a few strands of her hair trying to find some frayed ends. On the other side of the table the pope is near a bench with a mug of beer, and an ash tray with a cigar, he has a slutty woman in leather and lace under his arm, her large breasts about to burst out of her much too small top with her belly button revealed and showing a small tattoo "Jesus Saves", She has long lacey gloves and stocking and tall leather boots. Pope of course is wearing his tall bishop's hat and has head slightly tilted to the side and slightly looking sideways in the Dahli's direction. He has a smirk on his face, shoulder's raised and palms up. (in a somewhat ambivalent, I don't know pose). Out the window we see Westbro with their God hates Fags sign.

I don't. I haven't really looked into that site, although it seems to have a lot of members. Saatchi offers a similar service, I used that briefly, but I get distracted easily (e.g. I've been playing a game called Alien Arena obsessively over the past week - meanwhile I have an easy commission pending for next month's rent - I rarely even play video games, and yet I'm suddenly hooked on one I've never even heard of in a genre that has never interested me; I could make an entire month of rent in about two hours just by painting a picture of this person's head) yet I've chosen to regress instead, lol.

Do you have one, I'd love to see it, if you do.
