Loopy Christian college kid stabs himself at atheist gathering to prove God exists (http://freethinker.co.uk/2011/04/15/loopy-christian-college-kid-stabs-himself-at-atheist-gathering-to-prove-god-exists/)
QuoteAN “Ask an Atheist Day†event at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, turned nasty this week when Alexander M Huppert, a freshman university studies major, stabbed himself in the hand with a pen, then assaulted an officer who approached to check his welfare.
After a short struggle with the officer and several witnesses, he was taken into custody...
I have great difficulty comprehending this sort of behaviour
Why did he believe that stabbing himself in the hand would prove god's existence?

I don't think that was explained particularly well, if at all!
Unless he was on drugs..why was he not transferred to a mental hospital? Very odd and sad story. What is VT putting in the water?
Poor kid. Had to have his psychotic break in public.

Not too bad a thing - as he only hurt himself, the public got a nice show out of it, yes?
he doesn;t have enough faith
he should have stabbed himself in the HEART with a KNIFE
maybe he thought his "god" would heal him?
I bet he thought that if he showed people that he believed strongly enough to willingly suffer for his beliefs, then therefore god. (rolls eyes...)
It's like that fallacious argument where they claim that the apostles wouldn't have suffered persecution and death for a lie, so it must all be true!
I'd bet money that's what he was up to.
If God existed, he/she wouldn't let idiots like this roam the earth.
I don't know, looks more like issues than idiocy to me.

Yes. That.
"THEREISAGOD!!!" *stab* "Aaarhhhhh... And now I goes sees him" * x.x *
I think there is more going on here than the article covers. There had to be some rather mixed up thoughts in this kid's brain before he was ever in the presence of atheists.
This may sound harsh, but at least he only hurt himself.

My corruption spreads MUAHAHA!
In all seriousness though, what on Earth is wrong with harsh? Or are we all just supposed to cuddle and hug and love each other no matter what? Where harsh fits, let it be harsh.
Quote from: "Asmodean"Where harsh fits, let it be harsh.
I would like to know the motives why he felt he had to stab himself before I'm harsh. Stabbing oneself is just not a normal thing to do...

Normal takes on a whole new meaning when one is overtaken by the holy ghost! People get tongues of flame on their heads, virgins get pregnant, people get bit by poisonous snakes, a group of people will invite you up to the stage where they will all put their hands upon you and sign and praise loudly until they break into fits of random laughter, tears, and mumbling gibberish. That last one was really scary. It's why I didn't stay at the Assemblies of God for very long when I was trying to find the version of Christianity I agreed with.

Am I to understand that one should be extra nice to him just because he is not normal, should that be the case?
Asmodean, I'm not saying that you should be nice, I'm just saying that I would want to know if he had some real issues before being harsh. Someone stabbing himself is a little different from preaching the wildest, stupidest things in a church. I would waste no time being harsh in the situation fester30 described below.
Fester30: I agree that normal takes on a whole different meaning, but even among the religious stabbing your hand to prove that god exists would not be considered 'normal' I think.

LOL I think I would laugh along...
That sort of 'holy ghost' looks more like a 'demon' to me.

Yeah I left out of fear that sacrificing cats was next.

They would probably sacrifice a bunch of cattle, that yes. I think your fears would be better justified with those.
I guess he was thinking, "clearly no one would intentionally inflict pain upon themselves unless they knew God would protect them from the pain." Bizarre.
I actually go to Virginia Tech and I'm just hearing/reading about this story cause I had no idea this happened last month. Btw, do you guys think it's worth it to join an atheist/freethinking group at Tech or is that pointless? Also, the Westboro freaks came to Tech last year on the anniversary of the shooting and they were talking shit about us.

I think it would probably be positive to join an atheist/freethinking group. It's good especially in college to have others to bounce ideas off of, especially those that might be considered like-minded. It's healthy to see that even though you agree on one issue doesn't mean you walk lockstep on everything else.

I think this is a fair assessment.
