Title: Louis Theroux returns to visit the Westboro Baptist Church.
Post by: karadan on April 01, 2011, 08:23:25 AM
So Louis has returned to visit the crazy people at the Westboro Baptist Church and things have changed since his last visit. It's quite refreshing to hear they've had a few people leave the church entirely. This should be some unmissable TV.

QuoteAnother surprise was how much I had personalised the story by this time. My role in returning to the church had changed somehow. I was no longer a disinterested journalist. I'd seen too much. It was more like going to see family members with whom one has fallen out, with the same sense of rawness and exasperation. Quite quickly my encounters with the Phelps stopped being polite and turned barbed and impatient - on both sides.

If anyone is able to sow the seeds of doubt within this family, it's Louis. :)

I just watched the whole thing from when he first visited them, and all I really have to say is: "eugh".

Is "eugh" the feeling of being creeped out and disgusted by them along with a strong feeling of pity for them?

I'm generally pretty laid back about stuff, so "eugh" was all that I could manage.

EDIT: They do make some pretty bitchin' signs though.

Yeah, I'm with ya' there. I must say, they did seem to be doing rather large amounts of question evasion this time. Its like their reality shield was becoming dangerously thin and the innocent questions from the pesky Englishman were becoming harder to deal with. I especially liked it when he eloquently shut them up in the bedroom when they started to call him a snake. He revealed just the smallest hint of irritation and easily stamped them down. The guy is truly awesome.

I felt sorry for the kid. He had no clue what bullshit he was reciting.  :(

Yes, some of their signs were quite amusing. The one in the new documentary that got me laughing simply for the sheer stupidity of it was the "bitch sandwich" sign. It featured a baby hamburger with bitch sandwich written around it. I took it as one specially made for us atheists since we do eat babies, after all.

I did also enjoy some of their remakes of popular songs, such as crazy train. "you're going straight to hell on the crazy train!" I do wonder how they find so many words to rhyme with fornication though.  :hmm:

I wonder what excuses they will formulate this time. You know, when Jesus doesn't return and Obama peacefully resigns from office and slips into American history, just as all other presidents have done.

"Oh, uh, well Jesus is returning tomorrow instead. Oh, and Obama was the FATHER of the anti-christ, not the real deal. You'll all see."
