Title: if god exists, then pigs can fly. hi my name is Bill Nye
Post by: JuggernautJon on March 29, 2011, 11:26:35 PM
The science  guy.....yeah, I smoothly play that one off. Wouldn't let me type that much in the subject. Anywho.

98 percent of scientists denounce religion, yet Christianity holds the dominate hand.......I can't begin to fathom why?

Not sure I understand the Bill Nye reference, or if you were claiming to be him, but regardless of that rather odd start to your post, I have a question. Do you have a source for your 98% claim? And could you elaborate on it?

Thanks.

Some christians are reluctant to vote for an atheist, where as atheists have been less likely to reject a candidate because of faith.  So if elections are decided on the basis of a few percentage points why would a party risk an atheist candidate?  This is my impression anyway, and scientists don't run the world yet, they are locked in their labs by evil capitalists who will use them and religion to get their evil way.

Anyway I'm putting my vote in for Bill Nighy as the next Doctor Who.

I'll go with the fact that most people are not scientists.  Most people, in my opinion, understand very little about science, apart from what pop science they may see on Mythbusters that make them feel like experts.  I have one of these experts in my office at work.  Last year, he came into the office giddy with excitement telling us that it's scientifically proven that the 10 second rule (for eating food dropped on the floor) is true.  Every jewel of knowledge he gives us comes from Discovery or History Channel.  Now I love both those channels very much (two of my favorite), but I view them as a way to spark curiosity about subject matter.  This type of curiosity should be followed up with some simple research in journals, else a person may be inclined to believe that Nostradamus is the real deal.

IMO it's far more dangerous to have a few tidbits of scientific knowledge that you obviously get from TV than it is to have no knowledge whatsoever, because these are the same kind of people that try to tell us that the Second Law of Thermodynamics disproves the Theory of Evolution.

Ok, so your answer is that you have no actual, verifiable reference for the claim. Just FYI, Jon, if a Christian came into the forum throwing around statistics and claims, we'd give that person a pretty good grilling to see if they could back up the claim. So if you have a source, I'd be interested in seeing it.

Listening to a debate between Krauss and Craig (Is There Evidence for God? http://www.thegreatdebatencsu.com/ (http://www.thegreatdebatencsu.com/) ) .  I didn't catch where he got his data but Krauss just mentioned that 90% of scientists don't think there is evidence for God.  I'm pretty sure he did say 90 because he repeated himself and I was fully paying attention by the time he said it the second time.

And since some of those that don't think there is evidence probably are still be believers (even scientists can compartmentalize) that means the number of scientists who reject religion has to be well below 90%...especially if reject is taken to mean the anti-theist type of rejection instead of simple disbelief.

My apologies to all. I get stoned and get on this forum a lot and post about random things. And just FYI, Q, I happened to see it in the documentary Religulous.....Bill Maher. Great movie, if I may say so myself
