In Central TX right now it's 18*F, we hit our high of 30* right before this mess blew in. We are expected to drop into the single digits here this afternoon, may not be a big deal to most but this scares the crap out of most southerners! We had rain hit about 1 this morning with winds heavy enough to cause damage to trees, houses, etc.
I went out this morning to a missing chicken coop roof and chickens coated in ice, they were fine luckily. I found the roof and have to wait for the winds to die back down before I can put it back on. Have the pliers and bailing wire set to go. Thankfully the peaches haven't started blooming yet for those who will be around after I'm out of here.
Winds are still gusting enough to break branches but the sun has just peeked out, we are on the southern most tip of this thing.
So how's it going for the rest of ya'll stuck in this mess?
What monster storm?
It is windy, the roads are icy, and the rent is due (going to call to tell them to expect it tomorrow; not worth the potential accident to try to drive it over there today).
Oh this big thing over here in the states that's projected to affect 100 million people, a third of the US population

I haven't tried our roads yet but I'm thinking it's the same, and I have to take care of some bank stuff here in a bit that can't wait. Whoo Hoo!!

They are probably better now than they will be in a few hours...cars in the neighborhood are going by at a crawl (the two I've actually seen trying to drive) but at least it's still a bit slushy instead of all ice (though I just looked out and it appears to have solidified a bit). Be careful.
My car is in the garage and we have a driveway that slopes down to the alley...on the other side of the alley is a big storm ditch with only a light metal fence as a barrier. So, I'm stuck till the driveway ice melts.

I didn't know that there are 300 million people living in the US...
Anyway, good luck with the storm and everything.
Could be worse.
What?
Oh.
It will be worse in about ten hours.
Right now it's:

Shhhh...... don't tell anyone..... we have s-n-o-w.....
Got the lid back on the coop, now to fix a few more things before it gets worse.
Right now we have sleet here (outside of St. Louis, Missouri). The prediction is for 3 to 6 inches of snow during the day with 4 to 8 more during the night - on top of the ice. My job is 40+ miles from home. I will not be going to work tonight.
Ice on the roads north but clear here. But it's COLD!
And I'm shocked we still have internet, usually with winds like this we loose it for a few hours.

WTF! Have you people not heard of direct debits or on-line banking

Company doesn't have a debit machine and I don't want to pay the bank charges $10 to send a check (cheaper for me to take it over there). Main problem is that the landlord office won't accept checks (has to be bank backed cashiers checks) till after you've rented from them for a year; otherwise I could just mail it out myself a few days in advance.

We have a bank account that has no charges and I can access it online and pay directly into any account I want FOC. The retail banking sector got very competitive about 20 years ago and all the main banks were forced to offer free current accounts. Then there was a scrabble to get customers on-line and self service so they could reduce high street costs. We have banks that have no branches. Over the last few months some companies have stopped accepting cheques.
I still have to drive down to the city office and pay my electric with a check, no debit/credit cards accepted. Many businesses out here still have counter checks! Most places here don't accept debit/credit either.............. Kinda behind times

Rainy, windy...but still 66F here in the FL panhandle. I can feel the temperature dropping though. Still, won't be anything like what you poor SOB's north of us are going to have to go through. Lowest we're supposed to get to is 40ish. The heavy rain and wind is nothing new for us Floridians...that's something we know how to deal with, actually. However...ask us to vote correctly the first time...well...
Ya'll go build some snowmen for me now out there in Texas!
Quote from: "terranus"Ya'll go build some snowmen for me now out there in Texas!
brr...it's 16 deg with only a high of 22 tomorrow; way too cold for Texans to be outside.
The monster storm down here is thriving, 290km/winds, 4 metre storm surge, a metre of rain predicted, but I don't think it will send me anything more that rain. Morbidly fascinating these things, until you find yourself in one.
I heard climate change contrarians chuckling amongst themselves recently about those stupid climate change scientists.
Somehow the contrarians had the idea that climate change means endless drought, so record floods prove it's all crap.
The increased energy in the system meaning more extreme weather is just leftist lies.

Texans? What about us Florida natives?? I thought it stayed warm in TX in the winter!!!! Wind chill is probably 0 or below as well. Dogs were done with their business before I could get done and were waiting, huddled up, by the back door. It was a stampede when I opened the door.
I hate winter. I hate cold.
Quote from: "KDbeads"I hate winter. I hate cold.
Me too...as much as I also hate the heat in the summer I always remember how much more I hate the cold. Maybe that's why I"m not against a tiny bit of global warming

I am so ready to move back to Mississippi. It may be sweltering all summer, but 'winter' only lasts a couple of months and it only snows once in a blue moon.
The monster seems set on living up to predictions.

oh it's a mess alrighht
We "saw winter just this month. All through the previous months it was all summery

but from what I see there's some more rain coming. Maybe they'll stay longer this time
It's freezing ass fucking cold. At least it is for my blood. My thermostat is set for 60* and has cycled on about every 5 or 10 minutes for the last 2 hours. I've had to go through the house and add layers to the curtains to help block some of the cold blowing in.
And.... I broke down and brought the chickens into the garage. Their combs were turning really nasty looking and they were shivering. I hope there isn't too must frostbite damage. But at least now their water won't freeze, they hate living in dog crates but it beats freezing to death.
Yeah, from what I gather from the Weather Channel and Wunderground, if you live in the Eastern half of the U.S. and aren't south of I-10, your life pretty much sucks right now. Hooray for me! 39F this morning, temperature has been rising ever since. At 43F right now. Thank goodness I live by the Gulf of Mexico!
BTW, how's it going over their in Oz, pudding? Heard that cyclone was a bitch. You don't live in Far North Queensland, I hope? I mean, I guess if you do I won't be gettting an answer for a while as they said power will be out up there for a while. I know what that's like...Florida panhandle is a hurricane magnet. Stay safe!
EDIT: Lookie! I found a pic:

may not be a big deal

I'm fine, I prefer sub tropics to tropics, except for winter holidays.
It seems the 285 km/h (177mph) winds did occur and a 7 metre storm surge, plenty of property damage but no deaths reported yet, that seems incredible. I think those involved deserve a koala stamp.

Agreed, they sure do. Unbelievable no deaths, that's just excellent preparation/planning. If that thing would've come rolling through the Gulf Coast I can guarantee you there would have been casualties o' plenty...especially if it hit NOLA.
It's snowing here again.
No more snow here, but at 2:34 am, it's 7 degrees F. That's just too cold.
Wow, I went out this morning and saw the sun!! Then I looked down and saw the snow

We might make it up to 30*F today. We're having a heat wave.....
We only got maybe a tenth of an inch of really thin snow because it was too cold for real snow to form (-35ºish), and this was normal weather for us.
Y'all are wimps. Don´t complain about the cold until it feels like your lungs are freezing whenever you try to go outside, which is a prospect you would only consider with thick mittens and three layers of coats, and maybe some kind of facemask (which get quickly gets covered with frost from your breath), your spit snap freezes in midair, and mercury thermometers are useless except to tell you that the mercury is frozen.
...I might show some sympathy to the people that are used to 70ºF winters.... but then you can´t complain when it gets hot in the summer

I personally hate the heat. At least when its cold you can just put more clothes on. My insulated pants are just about my favorite thing in the world right now.
