Title: Hi all, Austin (name, not city) here.
Post by: lookitsaustin on January 09, 2011, 01:16:21 AM
Hello everyone!

I made an account here just a few days ago when Gawen showed me this forum.

I have grown up around one part of Texas my whole life. I went to a small school so I was not out about being gay or a non believer.

I am not a long winded person as of right now, I am new to forums so I may get more chatty as I am on here.

The one book that cemented my atheism is "The God Delusion".

I will add more here if I can think of some things to add. :)

Austin Healy would be cool, but you'd have to watch out for Vogons.

welcome.

The Hitch-hikers guide had an alien character who gave himself a common name so he would blend in, he chose Ford Prefect which didn't have the desired effect as it was the name of a car.  Austin Healy could work in the same way.

I see Dawkins did a dedication for DA in The God Delusion, he deserved it.

QuoteIn Memoriam
Douglas Adams (1952-2001)
'Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to
believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?'

Lol, now it makes a lot more sense, thank you. I haven't read anything by Douglas Adams but I did see him in a clip that Dawkins was in in the early 90's or so where he was talking to children about evolution. Is the book really all that? I don't know why but sometimes I shy away from things that are, in my opinion, mainstream.

I think it's a pretty good book.

QuoteVogon Poetry..
Ford Prefect, Arthur Dent are caught by the Vogon captain of the Vogon fleet which destroyed the Earth for an intergallactic hyperspace bypass. Vogon captain recites his poem to them before throwing them off the ship into deep hyperspace!
Vogon Captain: Oh frettled gruntbuggly.......thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee
Groop I implore thee,
my foonting turlingdromes and hooptiously drangle me
with crinkly bindlewurdles,Or I will rend thee
in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon, see if I don't!!
Vogon Captain: So Earthlings I present you with a simple choice. Think carefully for you hold your very lives in your hands. Now choose: either die in the vacuum of space, or…
[Dramatic music]
Vogon Captain: …tell me how good you thought my poem was.
Ford: I liked it…
Vogon Captain: Good…
Arthur: Oh yes, I thought that some of the metaphysical imagery was particularly effective.
Vogon Captain: Yes?
Arthur: Oh…. and um, interesting rhythmic devices, too, which seemed to counterpoint the, er…
Ford: Counterpoint the surrealism of the underlying metaphor of the, um…
Arthur: Humanity of the er -
Ford: Vogonity.
Arthur: What?
Ford: Vogonity.
Arthur: Oh. Oh! Vogonity. Sorry. Of the poet’s compassionate soul which contrived through the medium of the verse structure to sublimate this, transcend that and come to terms with the fundamental dichotomies of the other. And one is left with a profound and vivid insight into… err…
Ford: Into whatever it was …
Ford: …that the poem was about…
Arthur: That the poem was about!
Ford: Well done Arthur, that was very good.
Vogon Captain: So what you’re saying is that I write poetry because underneath my mean, callous, heartless exterior, I really just want to be loved. Is that right?
Ford: Er, well... I mean yes, yes, don’t we all, deep down… you know..?
Vogon Captain: No, well, you’re completely wrong. I just write poetry to throw my mean, callous, heartless exterior into sharp relief. I’m going to throw you off the ship anyway! Guard! Take the prisoners to number three airlock and throw them out.

Mainstream?  Well if so I wish mainstream and me could meet more often.
