This is just my way of getting to know people better. I love to listen to music. It helps me relieve stress.

I like a lot of genres, mostly alternative and metal.

But I also enjoy slow blues, and jazz.

My favorite bands are Alexisonfire and Tool (Be in awe of Maynard's lyrical stylings.)

The Chili Peppers own to.

Right now I'm listening to Heart Shaped Box, by Nirvana.

Pretty much my favorite song by them.

Well another TOOL guy on this site! They seem to be liked by atheists...more than the religous anyhow .

I can respect anything that uses instruments, but that doesnt mean I'll care much for it! haha.

But I tend to like most 90's rock and some 00+ stuff. The more new stuff the less I care for new stuff. NIN isn't too bad, TOOL fuckin rocks, Smashing Pumpkins are awesome, Chile Peppers are great, Incubus is a favorite of mine, like Marilyn Mansons middle-shit, Slayer, Pantera, Hurt (one of the few new bands I actually like a lot) , Rage is good but too political, long live APC, ISIS, old Korn, Tori Amos has a great voice and a few other 90's bands I cant think of.

To me, APC will live on forever. (Or atleast, as long as I can keep passing the songs onto younger and younger people.)

On another note, Protest The Hero's first album "Kezia" owns, (IMHO.)

I mainly like music from the seventees and eighties, like: AC/DC, Kate Bush, The B52's, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Sparks, The Nits, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Queen, Metallica, Kayak, Manowar, Ozzy Osbourne, Yello.

I'm a big fan of good old Jazz. Give me some Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, etc. I also love classical, like Chopin, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov. I have a lot of soundtracks, like Last Samurai, Galdiator, Battlestar Galactica, Tears of the Sun, Star Wars.

I've got an eclectic taste in music.  I like almost everything except rap and country.  Lately I've been listening to The Thermals (http://www.thethermals.com).  They've got some very irreligious lyrics, which is cool.

I'm not necessarily a big fan of any certain type of music and like various songs from almost every genre (no polka...yuck).  Lately I've mainly only been listening to classical because it helps me calm down before bed.

i also have an eclectic taste in music. i like anything from bach or mozart to tool, slayer, metallica, korn, marilyn manson to mainsteam hip hop ( im a dj and  my dj name is DJ Blast4me [say it fast]), also i dj trance. I cant say i like country or pop shit cuz no matter how eclectic my taste can be in my hears they still suck.

p.s. i just got the new marilyn manson. OMFG its sooooooooooooooo good. 2 thumbs up.

My Metal days are behind me for the most part. These days I listen to a lot of mellow Electronica like Ambient and such. Ulrich Schnauss, Peter Namlook, Matthew Florianz, Kitaro, and William Orbit are just a few of my favorites. I also like bands like mum, Sigur Ros, and amiina, which are hard bands to categorize. I like to call them bands to daydream by.

i love SOUL, classical,  jazz, R& B, country, (i'm no hick-phobe!  country took me a while, but i listened and found there are a LOTTA kinds of country music, and some of it i LOVE) rap, (yeah, i'm old.  i liked way back when too)  hip hop, REGGAE, new age, big band, even disco (good for workouts) and music from other countries.... but soul music, can't sit still.....

I like some of every kind of music (except country, somehow), and hate other parts of the same genre. I like certain songs in rock, for example, and hate others. For the most part, I describe my favorite song styles like this:

"I listen to music. If I like it, it's my style. If it's not, it's not."

While I was a massive head-banger in my younger days, I'm afraid I'm not so much into it now.  I always said I'd never grow out of it, and while I still appreciate it as a music form, I just can't listen to it.  I might have the desire to but after one song, I'm ready to change the tune.

I love Chick Indie Rock/Folk (Joan Jett, Indigo Girls, Sarah MacLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Mellisa Etheridge, Heart, Ani DeFranco, Dixie Chicks--my lone Country favorite, Pink, etc.) as well as Celtic mood music.  I love classic rock (70s country-rock, big hair 80s rock, etc.) and other stuff, like Van Halen, Boston, Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon, etc.  8)

I also love just about anything that was played on the TV shows "Ed" and "Scrubs."

If it was released in the past 10 years, chances are I don't like it.  I don't care for country as a rule, nor do I care for Rap at all.  I don't even really appreciate Rap as a genre... except for Beastie Boys.  LOL!  :lol:  :lol:

Alternative, like Incubus, hoobastank, RHCP (more the old stuff than anything), Everclear, Foo Fighters ( LOVE!) and Smashing Pumpkins.

I also love my old school, like Billy Idol, Johnny Cash, and the man I consider to be quite possibly the most amazing artist to date, John Lennon.

Atreyu, a band that is still on the underground (I really recommend that you check out some of their older works, anything before The Curse, my favorite song is Ain't Love Grand) is putting out a new album. I don't know the name, but one of the songs is Becoming The Bull. It is amazing. They have really outdone themselves this time. All teh fury and passion and torment that they let out is both cathartic and electric.


Thrice, one of my all time favorties, also are putting out a dual-disk release.  It is based off of the two elements, Fire and Water. For fans of more mellow, but still emotionally charged music, Water is a definite must, along with their last album, Vheissu. For fans of hard hitting, loud, fast, Kick your door down and punch you in the face style music, Fire, along with the OLD Thrice CD, Identity Crisis, is a must. I warn you in advance. Thrice had some serious Christian meanings in their old stuff, but if you can appreciate it for the music and the passion behind the music, then you will absolutely adore this band.

How do you get someone into Melodic Death Metal?  Introduce them to one of the best bands in that genre I've ever heard:

Metal seems to be popular here. I liked NIN & Tool at one point (when I was 13/14, so years ago now) and I'm good friends with a couple of metal bands which are quite well known here in the Bristol but you guys wont have heard of them, but I've never really been into it.

My taste is extremely broad, so I won't be able to delve that far into it:

I like a bit of electronica (Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk & some others).

1950s and early 60s pop music, before the influence of the Beatles really set in (Helen Shapiro, Sinatra, Dusty Springfield, Lesley Gore, Gale Garnett and so on).

Rock and roll & folk (Duane Eddy, Johnny & The Hurricanes et cetera).

Punk & emotional punk. And I don't mean modern 'punk' (yeah we're rebelling against the system maaan. 'Cept we're not, we're just going by a really old, really repetitive formula to con gullible bovine fools) or 'emo' (waaa it's hard being a spoilt brat). I mean the original British stuff of the 70s & 80s before it caught on in the States, excessive commercialism took over and it was made into the kind of insufferable whiny formulaic crap MTV has to offer.

Having said that though, initially the influence punk had on American music was good. I see Blondie as an American answer to punk & I adore the woman.

If you insist. Without going into a huge monologue: they're too over-the-top with their 'political message' & I personally find them boring. But then I have to confess that I haven't listened to much Bad Religion so that statement only really applies to RA.

I don't really care about RA's political message. They're just bad at conveying it, and not too creative.
Though BR are a very political and philosophical band (And generally force listeners to buy a thesaurus to figure out exactly what their song means), though I tend to like bands that are political, since politics tend to change, unlike the fact that people have too many hormones.

That's a reasonable point actually. Still, I don't like political music simply because I have my own political views & I don't care what theirs are. I listen to music to be entertained not to be indoctrinated, so to speak.

Eh, I guess in my case its because I don't live in the US, and BR's music brings up many issues I probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise (I already had quite similar views to the ones expressed in their cowritten lyrics anyways, so... Yeah...)
It's also quite entertaining in a way to figure out what exactly they're talking about...
Another point I don't like about RA lyric-wise is that they make their song's meanings far too obvious, while BR's songs, while some are quite direct, often are subject to multiple interpretations.

Generally, here, I'm not really old enough to do much politically (Yet), but I still try and help the poor, etc, and fortunately my school supports many organizations doing so, and lets us go on trips with other students and a few teachers to visit the people we donate to and organize fundraising events for (Last year I went to Mumbai, which happens to also be my birthplace), etc.
It's quite nice, really. Our Government, while not being an entirely fair Democracy, is incredibly impressive for one party (Since there are only one-party elections generally, due to the fact that the current party is good and nobody seems to see a reason in standing against them, since they tend to compromise), the only main objection I have is that gay marriage is banned...
But this is off-topic, so forget that.

Personally I think the quality and originality of music began to deteriorate very quickly from the late 80s onwards (so pretty much as soon as I was born, in fact!) mainly because there's just too much money in it now. People can't afford to be interesting or take risks.

I apply the same logic to films actually. That's why you get so many awful remakes these days; they know that a certain formula works so they stick to it. New ideas are holding less and less appeal because if they don't sell it'll cost millions.

I'm stuck in the 80s, for the most part, though I have a few exceptions.  The two CDs I listened to in the car today were "Straight out of Lynwood" by Weird Al (saw him in concert in June, my second concert) and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Once More with Feeling soundtrack."  yes, I'm a nerd.

Actually, come to think of it, there are several newer groups on my favorites playlist... mostly songs that were featured on "Ed" or "Scrubs."  Mostly alternative or what some call "emo" these days, I guess.  

I'm not a fan of much that came out before the Beatles, though... that's my husband's domain, I'm afraid.  I see a few on your list that my husband likes.  He also really likes Ed Ames and Roger Whitaker, which are on a few of our mutual lists, but not on a favorites list of mine.

You have one of the most eclectic lists of favorite music that I've EVER seen, much less of an 18 year old.  Kudos to you!

Oh that was a terrific episode. I shamelessly admit that I watched every one of every series, awful as they were... but I have three excuses:

1) I was a child & a very bored one at that.
2) It's not as if TV ever has anything better to offer, is it?
3) Yes it was completely naff... but in an entertaining way.

I do like Ed Ames but I've only heard of Roger Whitaker; haven't actually listened to any of his music yet, that I'm aware of at least. I'll get around to it eventually, most likely.

I'd have to agree to that to an extent. (Bad Religion, NOFX, etc, are all from the 80s. )
But yeah... There are some good bands, just not on the radio.

My taste in music is not so much eclectic as it is broad. I listen to almost anything, the exceptions being rap and country.

It really depends on my mood, and what I'm doing. If I'm programming, I go for music without lyrics (techno[dance, house, ambient,trance], classical). If I'm gaming, I listen to the in-game music (I love the soundtracks to Eve Online and World of Warcraft).

Wow...hand cramp...and that just barely scratches the surface. I have 1046 songs on my i Pod, but only 2 or 3 songs from each artist, so that's about 400 artists, give or take in about 20 genres. I still have about 600 cd's to rip...

Good bunch! On board with most of those specifically named as well (save for the 15% I've not heard of, the metal and the goth stuff).

And some rap music is fun. There's a place in Bristol called Broadmead (it's one of the several shopping centres in the city) where we get Christian preachers with microphones and leaflets every Saturday. Sometimes, on a lucky day, they start rapping about Jesus. It really is wonderful to watch, trust me.

I often like going to gigs to see small-time bands play, myself. You can, hard as it may be, encounter some gems.

Speaking of which, I went to see a gig at The Fleece a couple of days ago. My sister's band The Whores of War were playing (the only one I actually like - kind of Yeah Yeah Yeahs-ish) among others like 'Kismet'; who's members I get on with, they're nice blokes, but I really don't like their music; and another really really awful one who's lead singer I find annoying (used to be in my form in college; one of these nauseatingly nicey-nice people).

It was quite lecherous. But that's the truly great thing about gigs: if the music isn't so good, you can get really drunk and go and start a conversation with someone else. You can't hear each other talk so it ends up as two people shouting incoherent rubbish in each other's faces until the song ends. It works better if you do it with someone who's on too much cocaine because you can pretend not to hear them and watch them get really angry and frustrated. Great fun. :lol:

My favorite band is Bettie Serveert.  I just went music shopping today and bought the three CDs by them that I didn't have, including Palomine, for which I'd been searching for five years (woo hoo!).  (The other two I got were Lamprey--which I'm listening to right now--and Dust Bunnies.  Hopefully Dust Bunnies works; I got them all used, and DB seems to be scratched up a bit.  If it doesn't work I can return it.)

For the record I also bought Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, The Pixies Surfer Rosa, and Todd Barry's Medium Energy CD (comedy).  I'm a huge Todd Barry fan.

Right now I'm slightly obsessed with Le Tigre's self-titled 1999 debut CD.

Weird Al is my favorite artist. I have all of his albums (although most are on cassette ). I also like most 80's music and even some earlier stuff, I love the Monkeys. I'm also a big fan of Disturbed, Rob Zombie and other bands with that kind of sound.

Lately I've sort of 'rediscovered' Warren Zevon - this guy was awesome.  Here's one of my favorite youtube's of him - before playing Lawyers, Guns and Money he explains why he quit taking vacations (funny).

WOO HOO!!!  (see avatar)  We LOVE Al in this house.  We saw him in concert in June of this year... 3rd time for my hubby who first saw him 25 years ago, 2nd for me and 1st for our 7 yo son.  The kid was up on his feet, fist in the air, singing along with every song, old and new.  I was in tears throughout most of it just watching the kid.  

Al came into the audience and walked around in the two front aisles... and I was ON THE AISLE!  He was THISCLOSE to me... I could have reached out and wiped the sweat off his face.  I thought the kid was going to pass out from screaming his name.  LOL!

Kerri - be honest - when was the last time you watched UHF?? This is one of my favorite 80's movies. It's so misunderstood. In the summer of seventh grade that I would turn the sound off and watch it with music playing. When you do this it seems like any song you play syncs with the video.

As far as my favorite music... Anything psychedelic. I believe this crosses genres. But I'll name a few.

Otherwise I can't help but like the Hives. They're so obnoxious. Marilyn Manson (from Florida) was always a favorite. I love that he shoves Satan in everyone's face. I just laugh at that. White Zombie can do no wrong (The demon warp is coming alive, in nine-teen sixty.... five five five!!) I'm also really enjoying the Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Thom York, Tom Petty (From Florida), Morning Bell ( from Florida)

I've been listening to the Smashing Pumpkins this morning & some Aimee Mann in the car...

Not a Pumpkins fan, but I do like Aimee Mann.

I purchased the following (used) CDs from amazon.com last night:

Buffalo Tom - Let Me Come Over
The Trolleyvox - Present the Karaoke Meltdowns
Old 97's - Wreck Your Life (my favorite alt-country band.  Rhett Miller is dreamy)
The Wannadies - Be a Girl (I became obsessed with this band only two days after having heard them for the first time, about a week ago)

I also put Tom Waits - Rain Dogs in my cart, but the total came out to more money than I had (I also bought some books and a DVD as well) so I had to sacrifice a few things, and that was one of them.

Smashing Pumpkins is one of these bands that I here about all the time but I've never actually bothered to listen to because I've made the educated guess that I probably wont like them. The words 'alternative rock' are an instant put-off for me.

Oh and MysticalChicken, I've got to applaud your liking of Tom Waits. He's just bloody fantastic. I only have the album Blood Money (for me to actually buy an album means a great deal, bear in mind) but I've downloaded a bunch of his songs too.

I'm actually just getting into him, to tell the truth...

Ah, well in that case I'd recommend Blood Money to ya. Having said that though, his stuff varies quite a lot, so you may not be that into it. It's a bit more experimental than some of his other CDs, I reckon.

Does anyone else out there just love Elliot Smith?? What great tunes. Too bad he was stabbed in the heart with a steak knife by his girlfriend. True story.

I like him a lot.  I only have XO though.  I want to get Figure 8 (at least I think that's what it's called).

SteveS, Zevon was the man. Sentimental Hygeine is one of the best albums of the 80's. I still listen to it frequently.

I'd only heard one of their songs before.  They're really good.  I might have to check out some of their CDs.

But yeah I ended up buyin Alanis Morissette and the newer Hurt album. Alanis is fuckin awesome, the newer Hurt (named Vol. II) is ok, first disc was much better. I have only listened to it once though (2nd).

Thanks for sharing, Davpronk.  I llistened to a few song samplings on Amazon.com and I really enjoyed Air's sound.

Right now I'm slightly obsessed with 100-Watt Smile's And Reason Flew, and Tom Waits' Rain Dogs.

I like Air too, but I don't have any of their CDs yet.
