Title: Starting a new religion.
Post by: Cite134 on December 04, 2010, 08:08:05 PM
Okay, so for my anthropology class I have to develop a new religious movement described in a pamplet. I am probably making this more difficult than it has to be, but the project requires that it is at least a little convincing. The religion must:

1. Appeal to science

2. Have a prophet/prophecy

3. Make an allusion to some resurrection

4. Be exclusive (everyone cannot join)

I hope no one gets the impression that I am attempting to get members to do my project for me. I would just like to know if anyone had any ideas that I can work with. Due to my lack of creativity, it is difficult for me to start. : /

Good luck, you're going to need it, because these two are mutually exclusive.

Haha. I wish I didn't have to have a prophet and/or prophecy. I think when my teacher uses the word "appeal" in the phrase above, I think she really means "refer"..

You could start from the premise that some scientist supposedly died and rose from the dead.  This scientist could have returned from the great beyond with the prophecy that only science will save the planet from total annihilation in the year 3010 by collision with a comet.  Anyone who puts anything above science would not be allowed to join this religion.

This sounds like a good idea.

Anyone else?  :D

It seems to be like this could be solved with a few generous doses of Frankenstein.

It appeals to science, has a 'prophet' (either Frankenstein or his monster) as well as a resurrection.

And obviously everyone can't join, because, in many countries, they have never heard of Frankenstein and probably wouldn't be saved anyway. Also, no torch-waving mobs.

Isaac Newton was a weird bastard, all that alchemy stuff.
I think it is suspicious he spent years trying to make gold, then he supposedly gave up, and then;
"As Master of the Mint in 1717 in the "Law of Queen Anne" Newton moved the Pound Sterling de facto from the silver standard to the gold standard"
Obviously he was making gold financing Britain's rise to power, but he couldn't be too obvious about it.
I think old Isaac is at least as worthy as De Vinci for founding some fanciful conspiracy or religion.
And Uranus is a strange planet, something odd is obviously going on there.

I won't make a Uranus joke.
