Title: Any other hunters here?
Post by: Prometheus on October 26, 2010, 07:09:49 AM
Thought I'd ask. I hunt whitetail deer(Mostly), turkey, boar(Just starting this year.), and a lot of small game. Got a lot of squirrels this year but it got boring so I started bow hunting for deer again. It'd been 6 years since I'd last shot a bow and its taken me almost a month to get caught up accuracy wise. Haven't been in the woods much due to school and work but I have a christmas break in a few months and a brand new rifle.

I got a remington 700 bolt action 30-06. I put a bipod, sling, and scope on it. The scope was fuzzy(Brand called Cenetrpoint. I'd avoid them.) so I'm switching to something else. Trying to find a good one with milimarks. I'm a good shot and I'm wanting to set up where i can get 50-200 yards of range in.

I came up with a new idea this year. I've been wanting to eliminate my scent and I've not had much luck. Every time the wind shifts I get busted and my deer bolt or edge away from me.

I'm gonna make myself a sturdy coffin-like box with a water sealed exterior and bury it in the side of the mountain. I'll have an opening in the front to climb in and shoot out of from a belly position. Also I'm gonna put in some cedar shavings for more scent coverage. I think it'll work great but dad says I'm a nut rofl.

I've been doing some trophy hunting lately, but I'm running out of display area, and my wheelbarrow is too small.

When I lived in Michigan, I hunted everything. Since I moved to Texas, I can't afford to pay the lease. Therefore, I haven't hunted in 10 years. To hide your scent, use no odor soap and no smelly deodorant. Brush your teeth with baking soda only.  Leave you hunting clothes outside overnight. The cedar may help mask your scent as well. May even want to try leaving your clothes in a trash bag with cedar chips in with them.

As far as leases go, I can buy a round trip ticket to Michigan, but an out-of-state license cheaper than some leases down here.

:D ) And dad killed two does(Lucky. He fired once and the second one stood still long enough for him to reload his muzzleloader rofl. Dumbest deer ever. It had to take him at least 30 seconds to reload and this wasn't a canned hunt.). We had hell pullin those guys out. Mountain averages a 30 to 45 degree slope from the vertical plus logs and stones and brambles everywhere. Its hard to find a clear path. We were something like 400-500 yards from the truck. After I got mine to the truck on my shoulders I went back to help him. I was wiped from carrying the first one and dad smokes. After practically falling a few times each we just tied our belts to their necks and drug them rofl. What made it worse was that my crazy uncle greg was in the woods and instead of coming to help us he just started talking gibberish through the radio(He fried his brain with acid and coke in the 80's. He's a trip. I once saw him lose a fight to a tree  :pop: ).

That sucks man. How much are leases in both those states? Up here they can be bought jointly for 800-1200 dollars usually. I've heard that farmers are having trouble with boar down there bad. You might try asking around. Up here they commonly let friends hunt their farms just to be rid of some of the deer(They mess up the fences and can eat a considerable amount of crop over time.).

Unscented laundry soap, both for your clothes and your shower. Don't forget to use a towel that's been washed with unscented laundry soap and line dried-- don't dry your clothes in the dryer; there's still a lot of perfume residue in there. Then really get into it:  Cedar?  Nah, deer urine (http://www.harmondeerscents.com/products.aspx).  I'm not kidding. I haven't hunted in a long time, but I still enjoy stalking wildlife, and photography. One of my favorite hunting stories is about getting an elk up a steep slope; yours reminded me of that.;)

Nice. Post a few pictures, I'd like to see what you're killing. Wheelbarrow? I usually just throw mine up on my shoulders.
