Rofl. We just heard a speaker at work who said in essence that anyone who didn't read the bible was uneducated. He justified this by stating that several books from the bible appear on some noteworthy book companies top 100 books of all time list. Also, all followers of islam(All of them) are inferior to christians, are uneducated, and are planning to kill us all so we should get them before they get us. Isn't irrational fearmongering great? I'm actually hoping there's a massive holy war in our future. If we just sit back and let them massacre a few billion of each other, the average IQ level across the glode is bound to rise dramaticaly.
On a side note I'm fairly certain he's connected to that florida religious group which gave some of you guys trouble over your atheist billboard. Small, irrational world right?
What was this guy doing speaking at the place you work?
god placed him there to torment you.
I don't know whether I'm happy that other people have to deal with idiot co-workers, too, so that I'm not alone, or if I'm sad that idiot co-workers are so widespread. I have to watch Glenn Beck on the jumbo-screen just about every day at the resturaunt where I work because our regular drunks up at the bar insist we put FoxNews on. Oh, the conversation I get to hear.....
I was complaining to one co-worker about how much I hate Beck and his bullshit and one of the bartenders overheard and informed me that Beck has a Masters in History, so, like, 99% of the time when he's talking about history, he knows what he's talking about. I laughed right in his face and then I had to walk away. Aside from this, I'm regularly reminded that the Obama deathpanels are coming and we're all going to be taken over my communists.
Another time I went up to the bar to grab some drinks for my table and I hear the gem "Evolution is a liberal theory." It was a reflex, and I just instinctively said, "No, it's not!" All those gross old Republican drunks turned and looked at me and all I could do was back away and say, "Nevermind, didn't say anything, I'm at work, not gonna debate here, nevermind..."
So, I guess it's not just idiot co-workers, but also idiot customers for me. I just remembered that my idiot manager tried to explain to me that chimps were baby gorillas, even after I told him I went to college for biology and environmental studies and that I know they're two different species....
I need to stop, too many stories.
I'm sorry you have to deal with really religious idiot co-workers, though. I haven't had much problem with that. Everyone at my work knows I'm atheist, and they don't seem to care, or they're too afraid to bring it up. No one is really crazy fundie religious there, so I don't have to hear about commie Muslims and the End of Days, or anything like that. I'm not sure what I'd say if someone told me that people who don't read the Bible are stupid and inferior. I'd probably lose it on them....
What kind of place do you work in? Why did you have a religious speaker?
I work with a lot of tea-baggers, and 3 creationists. You literally can't have an argument with them because they subscribe to separate laws of nature...completely made up. Also, any argument your try to make, they respond with a quote from the bible that may or may not have anything to do with the conversation.
A co-worker of mine recently committed suicide, and his supervisor and boss are not attending the service today because they have no respect for someone who is burning in hell. (from their mouths)...
Religion is poison. End of discussion.
Quotegod placed him there to torment you.
Rofl. I suppose i owe this god fellow a swift kick in the nuts.

Rofl you run into that sort of thing down here in the bible belt all the time. Just yesterday i had a 30 minute arguement with someone over whether the terms "in god we trust" and "One nation under god" were present when our nation was founded. I'm sure you all know that it is historical fact that these terms were added at different times at least 90 years after our nations founding. In god we trust was added to small coins in 1864 and was adopted as our nations motto in the 50's when "in god we trust" was added to the pledge as well during the 50's. The girl said "Well, i don't believe that." When I told her. Rofl I said, "You can't NOT believe it. Its historical fact, look it up." She just stormed out of the room and said, "You're going to hell!".As best i can tell she's still just not believing it. Wish I had that sort of flexability lol. It never helps when you're the one rational person in a room full of 10 or more believers. Even when you make a bulletproof rebuttle you're made out to be wrong just based on the numbers and a lot of, "Lalala, you're going to hell, lalala"
Almost forgot to mention this. I work at a Catholic healthcare center for the elderly. I hate the religious aspect of it but I put up with it because i like working with these old folks. I feel that this meeting was actually a violation of my rights but it was easier to just sit through it than to have to argue with 400 60+ year olds about my beliefs. I'm sure i could have gotten out of the meeting but it was presented by a resident who I'd had some respect for until i heard him speak. He seemed to be a well read, rational person but I learned otherwise during the speech.

Fucking hell! That's...Unbelievable!
If anyone where i work uttered such uncompassionate BS, they'd be unofficially warned. After quizzing my boss about that situation, he had to admit that it is just a personal opinion, and that the person who said it couldn't be lawfully punished.
Luckily there's no crazy people like that where i work. We're all intelligent geeks here
I had an employee one time at one of my gas stations who, in talking with a customer, averred a lack of understanding as to why fundy Muslims murder apostates. Then she said, "I mean, I can understand why they'd do that to atheists, but Christians?"
The silence was very rewarding when I asked her, "So you think it's okay to murder people for not believing in God?" And then once the customer left I advised her to not bring up religion again, as it is borderline unprofessional in a retail environment.

Everyone knows this! They seem to have an invisible brick wall around them.

That's just.. Sad.
Oh how I love working here! I know 3 of my 4 coworkers are atheist and the other is most likely, or maybe more agnostic. I thought all sciency sort of places would be like that...but when I worked in an engineering firm in the South...oh BEWARE THE FUNDAMENTALISTS! I was the complete freak - vegetarian and atheist. Straight outta their nightmares...

I just pictured a gay, black, vegetarian, atheist hopping off the bus in the South and wating for him is a crowd of rednecks with shotguns and burning crosses.

Not sure he'd have lived to post had that been the case.

As a Christian myself, I would disagree with the speaker 100%. If educated means well-versed in science and philosophy, then I would agree with you that a "holy" war where a few billion are massacred would raise the average IQ across the globe. I simply wouldn't hope for such a thing to happen simply to raise the IQ across the globe.
When it comes to being literate in English literature it helps immensely to have read the bible, but not having done so by no means makes anyone an idiot. Maybe he's an idiot if he hasn't seen the Avatar movie or last years Super Bowl.

Yeah, don't take the things I say too seriously. Even if we hypothetically got rid of most or all of the theists, the nontheists have the same flaws as the rest of the world. Everybody just uses some "ism" or another to justify what they would think or do anyway.

I agree. His word was "uneducated" not idiot. Same meaning but it allows him to play it off like it wasn't meant as an insult rofl. I'm a lot happier about this situation now. I've been speaking with the residents where I work and not a single one of them agrees with the guy. Most of them are actually very intelligent. Its sucks how 1 percent of a group can make the other 99 percent look like dangerous bigots. I wonder what the rest of world thinks of America? The extremists have been making more noise than the rest of us combined for decades.
To original posters: We are all a bunch of monkeys arent we? Humanity is the best evidence of that.

This is probably the most truthful post I've seen in a long time!
My roommate is a young earth creationist, so it's pretty tough to deal with some of the things he says. Me and him have debates once in a while, and I think I'm starting to make some headway... but it's pretty hard to convince somebody who doesn't believe in dating methods and... science in general. He's pretty bile-less as far as they go, mostly because he's too laid back to care much.
Here's some of the things he's said:
1. It's better to litter a moderate amount since it's stupid to gather all garbage in one smelly dump. :hmm:
3. That I'm not really an atheist because I referenced the devil a couple times in jokes. :raised:
He doesn't seem to have the personality type to be into this sort of thing, so I figure it's some sort of family indoctrination thing. His entire family is Christian, probably fundamentalist.
