Title: Nostradamus
Post by: KebertX on October 04, 2010, 01:15:51 AM
Okay, I'm pretty sure none of you free thinkers actually think Nostradamus could actually predict the future.  But you must admit that he did have some really creepy shit going for him.

Just to name a few: http://science.discovery.com/top-ten/2009/nostradamus-predictions/nostradamus-predictions.html He's also written quatrains supposedly referring to Hitler's rise to power, Napoleon Bonaparte's death, and at least 3 of his quatrains have been claimed to predict the the 9/11 terror attacks.

QuoteIn the year 1999 and seven months,
A great King of Terror will come from the sky.
He will bring back the great King Genghis Khan.
Before and after Mars rules happily.
Supposedly, it says 1999 instead of 9-11-1 because Nostradamus like anagrams. This apparent BS aside, he isn't doing too bad, as far as prophecies go.

QuoteThe sky will burn at forty-five degrees
Fire approaches the great new city
Immediately a huge, scattered flame leaps up
When they want to have verification from the Normans.
This one supposedly refers to 9/11 because "45 degrees latitude" and "New City" both describe the location of the world trade center.

QuoteIn the City of God there will be a great thunder
Two brothers torn apart by Chaos
While the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb
The third great war will begin when the big city is burning
Aside from the "two brothers" reference to the twin towers, this poem is actually put in the right chronological place to describe 9/11/01

Does anyone here think he had any actual perception of the future, or did he just get lucky several times?  I've heard the argument that he and other future-predictors are just vague enough that their predictions can be interpreted to mean anything.  But I don't think that accounts for the total eeriness of all this Nostradamus crap, it seems to fit too well... I'm just inherently superstitious, I need a little help getting past that.

So: Thoughts? Opinions? Verbal Abuse? Shoot.

If you write enough predictions in vague language at least one of them is bound to be able to be used by people of the future as evidence that you predicted an event.

If people were able to use his work to predict exact events before they happened I might start to be impressed.

Do they say "Hitler" and "Napoleon Bonaparte", or did some people find a way to make them fit?

Wrong year is wrong, the "king of terror" is unidentified, Genghis Khan had nothing to do with the attacks and there is no evident connection between the 9/11 attacks and Mars (http://www.mars.com/global/index.aspx).

Nowhere does it say "latitude", Planes approached rather than fire, New York was settled in 1624 and there is no evidence that the French were involved.

QuoteIn the City of God there will be a great thunder

There is no reason to say "New York" is the "City of God", there is no connection between "brothers" and buildings, there is no fortress that was involved, the "great leader" is unidentified and World War 3 didn't start afterward.

True dat, when major disasters are prevented by using Nostradamus Quatrains, then I may have to revise my ideas.

K, so where were the Nostradamus fans on 9/10/01?
It's called apophenia - seeing patterns in anything.  The stupid "bible code" is a prime example.  I HATEHAHTEHTE Discovery and the "History" channel for spreading these idiotic ideas.  :drool

Are there any opportunities to pick up some cheap real estate?
Perhaps a nice rural property, with a secure compound suitable for livestock or backpackers, and a palatial residence for myself.
I'm OK with waiting until 2013 to take possession, if the price is right.

Do Christians often use an arms wide open welcoming Jesus, suggestive of the crucified form?
I imagine the Romans familiar with the arms wide preacher, may have been amused by the irony.

I think I missed that part, what version have you been reading?  :D
I've never felt that any prediction identified AFTER an event has happened could be true, although I had a strange memory of wanting to be a country singer and singing about "when the twin towers fell", choosing that subject because I felt they would never fall (being very young).

Well, that is in the really banned part, but I suspect the donkey. Apparently, it has a bigger load than all the kings combined...  :hmm:
