Title: Animals And Tools.
Post by: tymygy on September 17, 2010, 12:40:55 AM
QuoteTool use is so rare in the animal kingdom that it was once believed to be a uniquely human trait. While it is now known that some non-human animal species can use tools for foraging, the rarity of this behaviour remains a puzzle. It is generally assumed that tool use played a key role in human evolution, so understanding this behaviour's ecological context, and its evolutionary roots, is of major scientific interest. A project led by researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Exeter examined the ecological significance of tool use in New Caledonian crows, a species renowned for its sophisticated tool-use behaviour.

I always found these kind of things intriguing, animals are smarter than we give them credit for.

Other animals that use tools involve;

Chimpanzees are capable of making spears to hunt other primates for meat.

Orangutans have developed a way to make improvised whistles from bundles of leaves.

Dolphins carry marine sponges in their mouths to stir the ocean bottom sand and uncover prey.

Gorillas are known to use branches as walking sticks to test water depth and trunks from shrubs as makeshift bridges to cross deep patches of swamp.

Octopus that uses coconut shells as portable armor which is one of the latest addition to a growing list of tool users in the animal kingdom.

When | was a boy I had a pet crow, and can attest to their amazing intelligence.  Even those who shoot crows for sport generally grudgingly admit that they are very clever birds.

Personally, I'm deathly afraid that the Planet of the Apes wasn't that far off.  I meen, if the chimps have spears then how long will it be until they get bows and arrows?  Its all just pointed stick technology people.  Soon they will rule the world!

I did not hear about that.  Now I'm even more scared.

And as for the Intelligence thing, I'm gonna have to disagree.  THey aren't stupid animals and could very possibly be trained to communicate with us easily (more so then the sign language thing).  Personally, I think that if chimps were to figure out how to make fire, then we'd be pretty screwed.  Have you seen Discoverys "Planet Earth"?  Chimps literally go to war with other chimp nations, marching in lines.  ITs some scarey shit I can tell you.

Seriously a crow?
Can your crows be trusted around an unsuspecting eyeball?

It's hard to believe the first arrow or spear wasn't just a sharpened stick.

Obviosly not, but thats cause they have no manners, doesn't mean they aren't smart.  Corvids are very intelligent birds, Ravens and Crows especially.  If you ever actually watch a raven figure something out, it can get a little creepy.  THey are obviously kinda slow (which is why they havn't mastered the pointed stick yet) but they are persistant little bastards, and they will get what the want.

Furthermore, where you aware that Ravens often exibit signs of rudimentary culture?   IF a Raven dies, often there will be a funeral, where a bunch of birds all line up around the dead bird and stare at it for a while, then they all fly off in unison.  Ravens have also been known to slide down snowy slopes on their backs for no purpose, other then possibly entertainment.  They really are amazing birds, if you can get past the whole filthy scavenger thing.
