40 percent does not quite surprise me. I have found that I need to seek out actively religious people in order to find any in Scotland. Granted this does not tend to take long. Maybe in the not to distant future this process will take longer, longer and longer.

I sincerely hope so. I want him to hurt over this fact, i really do. One thing is for sure, my country will become ever-more secular as the years roll on. Religion had its time. It will never revert to the way it used to be, that's for sure.

Holy crap.  He has no knowledge of his own Church's history?  Perhaps he should look up Pope Pius XII, who called Hitler's invasion of Russia "High-minded gallantry in defense of the foundations of Christian culture."  Mind you, this is the invasion that caused six or so million combat casualties, and another 10 to 15 million civilian deaths.

But it was cool, because they weren't Catholic.

It's sick, when a church of the "true" god, doesn't do anything to help them either.

If their god WAS the true god, he probabaly said "ehh, its cool, they weren't catholic anyways"

Protecting a religion by killing millions upon millions of people, is a cowardly way of making people convert.

Well, for starters, no single Roman Catholic was responsible for 10-15 million deaths(I don't think).

And, the majority of people think he was an atheist, but I highly doubt that.

I'm definetly not a expert either, all I knowledge I accumulated about him was what I learned in a chapter or 2 in school.

The Pope is trying to reinvent history and thereby eliminate the complicity of the Church in the support of Nazi Germany.

I've done the math before but I'm not 100%, the crusades resulted in the death of something like 10% of humanity whereas the holocaust, Mao and stalin resulted in abt 2% death rate.

In the book "Mien Kampf(y chair   ) Hitler displays great affection for the local Abbot while growing up, and often says that the man inspired him to be a priest.  So I'm gonna say no, Hitler was not an atheist.

Not quite that many million deaths, but you have to take in consideration the over time population increase in the world inbetween 1100-ish and 1940-ish..

I've done a lot of reading on Hitler's life.  I'm certain he was  theist.  Tank's point that Addie would've used Christianity as a political tool is spot-on; but he repeatedly referred to "God", the "Almighty", or "Providence" in his private discussions as well, according to several different sources, including William Shirer, John Toland, and Albert Speer.

I think we've all done a lot of reading on Hitler, also Austria and Germany at that time. What I can gleam from what I'm read is that Hitler was half Austrian and half Jewish. He was brought up Catholic as were all Austrians at that time. Germany strongly catholic. They certainly tried to spread their genes far and wide throughout the countries they occupied. I read Hitler dispised the fact he wasn't pure blood Austrian and wanted to ensure a pure German race would rule the world. Of course, you can't believe everything you read but I'm aware of the strong Catholic influence of that time. To call these religious people Atheists is a cop out by those who wish to cast aspertions elsewhere, hide their own sins and sins of their own people. More bloodshed has been spilled in the name of religion than for any other reason.
