Title: Rothko Chapel
Post by: Sophus on August 09, 2010, 01:13:59 PM
So how many of our Texan friends have been to the Rothko Chapel (http://www.rothkochapel.org/) in Houston, TX? I have to admit it looks rather intriguing, although I'm not all that impressed by Ad Reinhardt (http://www.afterimagegallery.com/loengardreinhardtlarge.jpg) style paintings... but I guess I could appreciate it for meditation.

[spoiler:1xemk6hm]Yes, Reinhardt painted black and blue rectangles and called one "The Ultimate Painting"[/spoiler:1xemk6hm]

I'd go just to see the paintings. Love that kind of stuff!  :)

Rothko and Reinhardt are two of the biggest influences on my work, especially Reinhardt.

I know that being in architecture I'm probably supposed to have heard of that church and am probably also suppose to like what it looks like....but, it looks awfully sterile and, well, dead to be the kind of space I would design to try to stir spirituality.

I prefer this approach to simple:

^Monastery....designed by an atheist.  The coolest part:  they knew he wasn't religious when they hired him.

Ooohh.... that is very nice. Is that your favorite architect?

I think outside of Rothko is a little more interesting. Although they could lop down that huge tree throwing off the sense of balance.
