Title: Why not have International Recue aka Thunderbirds?
Post by: Tank on July 21, 2010, 02:57:42 PM
I loved Thunderbirds as a kid, all those techno toys put to good use saving lives. Imagine a set of refurbished super tankers moored out at sea around areas likely to suffer from earth quakes, tsunamis, eruptions or famine. Nowhere in the coastal world more that 48 hours from significant relief. Stripped of their deck piping they could fly 3 or 4 helicopters on board simultaneously so even as they approached the disaster zone the top levels of their cargo could be airlifted off. They could be fitted with desalination plants and provide fresh water and hold thousands of tons of dry goods. Just think each country could fund this by cutting their defence budget by, what, 1%?

The US Navy often supports rescue operations with the deployment of assault carriers with accompanying heloes, prepositioned supplies, and Marine battlegroups for disbursement and the imposition of order.

eta:  But they don't have nearly as cool a name as the Thundercats do.
