Title: To hot to read...to hot to type
Post by: Gawen on July 13, 2010, 11:08:03 PM
Today just about killed me. Just too frakkin hot and humid where I live. Saps the energy right out of me.
So when I'm not melting a big block of ice over my head, I'll check in from time to time.

And to think there's 2 months of this stuff left..*hevy sigh*

2 months?  Wait I thought we had at least until the middle of October.....  Wait that was last year.....

Broke down and turned the AC on, set it at 80 from 3 pm to 10 pm, set at 90 the rest of the time.  It kicked on around 1pm today, got a little warm in here :shake:

Up in the UP of Michigan, it's really nice weather.  Today was about 70 with no humidity, by seven pm, it was only about 60.  Tonight should be very nice, indeed.  But, I understand heat as I grew up in South Carolina.

I'm on a summer softball team (composed fully of freethinkers from the DFW area) it was so hot playing sunday evening (I'm catcher and wear a mask so I'll have teeth later) that I almost couldn't do it.  I was apparently really dehydrated and started crying when complaining about how uncomfortable I was...I didn't even remember that I had done that till my husband reminded me to make fun of me for being a baby.  It was absolutely horrible and I was drinking as much water as I could....no more texas summer leagues for me after this one; at least not if I have to play catcher.

I SOOOOOOO understand whereof you speak, my sibling-in-heatstroke.  I was so sweaty and grimy when I returned home from work that I immediately washed my face...which was immediately sweaty and grimy again.  I was refreshed for about 5.2 seconds, I think.  In fact it's so hot here, that, in homage to New York, I'm compelled to quote Douglas Adams:

QuoteOne of the extraordinary things about life is the sort of places it's prepared to put up with living.  Anywhere it can get some kind of a grip....It will even live in New York, though it's hard to know why....In the summer it's too darn hot.  It's one thing to be the sort of life form that thrives on heat and finds, as the Frastrans do, that the temperature range between 40,000 and 40,004 is very equable, but it's quite another to be the sort of animal that has to wrap itself up in lots of other animals at one point in your planet's orbit, and then find, half an orbit later, that your skin's bubbling.

I would only add to this excellent and sensible summary of the state of affairs in the summer in NYC, that your skin doesn't so much bubble, and slough off you in great sticky gobs.  It's lovely.

9pm and it still reads 92* out.

At least we got rain this year.

Would be tolerable if we had a breeze with all this heat and rain though.....

ETA.... would be almost tolerable.....

California summers suck, along the coast.  It never gets above 80 F or so.

I must say, I am not jealous of people who live in places that get hot...
though, last night I woke up because I was cold and had to put an extra blanket on.

Meh, I prefer blankets to having to deal with an AC.

It's expected to be almost 61 degrees here today.
(Why don't you use Celsius? I had to use a temperature converter and everything  :P)

61°F is a cool winter day where I live.
A warm summer day would be low 80s.
Latitude is about 31° South, and coastal.
Similar to San Diego latitude.
I regard it as a Goldilocks climate.

I miss the seasons.  Here in SoCal we only have two:  the wet season, and the dry season.

I'm about 45 miles from the coast here in Texas - humidity is evil, evil, evil.  Unfortunately I have to get out and do some yard work since the grass and limbs aren't going to cut themselves.  Later on I get to build an extension onto the carport for my folks...outside carpentry and July in south Texas are a horrible combination.

Around here, humidity usually makes it feel colder.

You poor thing.  I hope you have lots of cool refreshing sweet tea to help you along.  :D  I remember being pregnant in southern Texas in July, man that sucked.  It was a constant struggle to stay within a few feet of an AC unit.

I know you folks will hate to hear this, but I live in the UP of Michigan on the coast of Lake Superior.  We haven't had a day where the temps have reached 90 F so far this summer.  Today and yesterday the temps didn't reach out of the 60's F.  Typically, we don't have more than five to ten days where the temps reach the 90's F.

Of course, you have to realize that in the winter we get better than 300 inches of snow from October to May, which kind of offsets the nice summers.

We live in similar necks of the wood... Texas that is.

Last year in the Central Texas area there were over 60 plus days of 100+ temperatures.  This is no joke.  It was HOT and it was DRY.

This year it is a horse of another color.  It is, relative to last year that is, some what hot, but very HUMID.

Yesterday it was 91 and very humid.  It felt like it was more like 99... but it still isn't the same.  Even though the heat index may say 98, 99, 100, etc.  with the high humidity it feels 10x worse than being at 101 and dry.

It sounds strange, but I would rather it be 102 and 20% humidity than 90 and 80% humidity.  The latter just feels awful.

I had to make a 3 hour drive back from the town I was living in to the town I'm currently living in the other day. I was in a hurry to get back to make it to work so I forgot to make sure I had some water to drink. It was over 100 degrees outside, and my wonderful little dodge neon does not have air conditioning.
When I got to work I was dizzy and felt like I was going to faint. Both hands had fallen asleep and were stuck in a clawlike position. I had to sit for about the first half hour of work just drinking water.
Boy, did I feel like a moron.

indeed. It was bad. The moral of the story, I guess, is don't forget to drink water on a hot day.
Don't be like me.

Ford explorer.... BLACK.... no AC.  I can commiserate!

The house ac unit is having a little trouble keeping up today.  Changed the filter and crossing fingers.  We had to live without the darn thing last September with those 100* to 108* for an entire sweaty week until the parts came in (needed a new control panel for the compressor and a new fan motor, our AC is ancient and no longer made, had to re-engineer the fan motor spot for one from Granger, found a used control panel)..........  Really do not want to do that again!

There are indeed four seasons in Central Texas
Some refer to the seasons in terms of how hot it is

January to February- Not so Hot

March to May - Hot

June to October - VERY F#$%IN HOT (as in blistering, turn you lobster red, instant dehydration HOT)

November to December - Huntin' Season!

Depends on who you talk to.....
There is also: Not quite summer, summer, still summer and deer season.

Well, it's been 6 days since I even looked in here. The last three days had a heat index over 105f/40.5c. Today wasn't so bad...not as humid. But I'm tellin ya's...I so miss Michigan this time of year. A dip in Lake Superior would suit me fine.
I get cranky in this heat. I have to work in it all day. By the time I get home, all I want to do is get cold and sleep.

I hate to bump this old thread...but...the weather here finally broke. Well...at least to my standards. What a sucky summer! I put 0 miles on my motorcycle since the beginning of April. August had 30 days over 90f/32.2c and 22 days over 100f/37.7c. The hottest day was 107f/41.6c. And I work outside. And the truck A/C broken all summer.
Lucky for me I got a promotion and get to work in an air conditioned vehicle (most of the time) till I retire....which'll be at least the next ten years...*chucklin*

It's so nice to come home and not want to pass out.

Summer finally got here to SoCal, four days after it offically ended.  Sunday was 83F, and yesterday 94F.  Given that I live a fifteen-minute walk from the Pacific, these are very hot temps.  Today we're back down to 74F or so, which bums me out.
