Title: So...whattarya doin' with YOUR Friday Night?
Post by: The Black Jester on July 10, 2010, 12:00:56 AM
Any plans?  Dancing?  Drinking?  Staring at your computer screen, locked on this site, in hopes of the start of a flame war?  Covering yourself with jam?  What????

Covering myself with jam, how did you know?

The fiancé and I are going to pack up some water and Gatorade and snackums in a cooler and venture out to the bookstore and then the park for a chillaxing evening.  What are you up to?

Prepping for my spot at the farmer's market thing tomorrow.  Taking the chicks and my jewelry and hoping to make a few sales.  Everything is almost ready.....

Now..... for those price signs......

Well, I was going to do the jam thing, but I just feel like, you know, that's EVERY Friday night, so maybe I'll just read a book.

Actually, my wife and I are probably going to do the reading thing.  We just finished watching a movie - Coraline - and now it's pizza and books.  We used to just turn on the tube and go straight for rots-ville, but we made vow to give it up (mostly, barring the odd Netflix) for the summer.  It's made for a more uplifting summer thus far.

But then again, PS3 might win out.

And I must apologize to all our European friends (and others in even more distant timezones) who obviously have finished their Friday night.  A shout out to them!  What did YOU DO with yours?!  Obviously you don't need to get out of bed right now and tell me, you can do it in the morning.

Trying to de-stress my brain from work. Picking out a good comedy or something. Relax. Get some comfort food. Maybe write a little. And just do stuff for myself.

I'm writing (well, editing a go by set) the volunteer staff manual for camp quest texas and occasionally poking my head in to see what's going on the forum.  Later I think we're going to marathon watch old episodes of Angel via netflics.

This weekend was originally supposed to be a beach trip (3rd year anniversary) which which got canceled on account of the weather forecast for the gulf (didn't want to pay for a hotel at the beach just to get rained on) and then it was going to be a camping trip which got canceled on account of it is storming everywhere we were thinking of camping!

I'm working on writing some guitar parts for a song, waiting for the wife to get off work and maybe working a bit on a chapter for my book I may finish before I hit middle age.

Yeah, I'm a guitar nerd... I own five.    My Fender tobacco sunburst Fat Strat is my favorite. Haven't touched the twelve-string acoustic in a while. I've written a few songs but I have no idea what genre they could possibly be classified as.

Hee hee... I know this answer but I'll let Squid answer. He's going to be the next Richard Dawkins.

Oh, I forgot to say what I'm doing tonight. Um ... I thought I was going to see Inception but apparently that comes out next Friday. :facepalm2:

I thought that might be it!  Obviously, really.  I'll have to get it when it comes out - I've started on an Evolution kick recently.  Begun with On the Origin of Species - I'd never read it before.  Have a whole pile of Dawkins and a Jerry Coyne to get through next.  That plus all the Phil and Neuroscience books I want to read.  So basically I'm reading for all my Friday nights into the foreseeable future.

Quote from: "Sophus"I thought I was going to see Inception but apparently that comes out next Friday.

You could always go see Predators instead.  There's still time.

It's actually a song my father had composed on his Yamaha workstation - lots of strings, piano and such but he needed me to punch in some guitar parts at a certain point.  Based upon what he described to me about what he'd like I ended up with something that was very reminiscent of David Gilmore's stuff.  It's short though, he only needed like a 30 second part.

I'm actually looking to start up a southern metal band now that I've moved but finding folks to build a new band from the ground up is harder than most people would think.  Anyhow, most of my stuff would fall into the hard rock/metal category but I also don't shy away from blues.  I have a few crappy guitar demos on my band's tentative Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/shotgunvengeance) page if you're interested - just keep in mind that these are all rough cuts and by no means complete songs; I'll have to wait until I have a full band to complete them.

Anyhow, the guitar I'm using right now is one I've had for a long while, a Washburn X-16 (http://www.guitar-museum.com/uploads/guitar/26/290164076634-1.jpg) with a flaming skull graphic however I have my eye on a Schecter Hellraiser Deluxe (http://www.gear-vault.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/hellraiser-c-1.thumbnail.jpg) with a see through red paint job.

I think if I kept every guitar I've had I would have about 13 guitars right now but as of right now I only have the Washburn, a Seagull travel acoustic and an Aria acoustic.

I'm also working on setting up a home studio.  I've got the recording software and guitar effects, mics, cables but I need still need some interfaces for mics and maybe a decent mixer but until I have a full band I probably won't be doing too much.  Time will tell I suppose.

I started working on a book about evolutionary theory but one where I attempt to take all the technical scientific stuff and break it down for mass consumption.  But the angle is more to correct the distorted and inaccurate strawman version of evolution that so many opponents of the theory utilize in arguments.  The title I'm working with right now is "Burning Down the Strawman: Evolution Explained for the Average Joe and Jane".  It's sort of like a For Dummies book but a bit different.  I'm also attempting to include some historical background so people can understand where this information is coming from and that people just didn't pull it out of their ass so to speak.  Mix that with general information and overviews of underhanded creationist tactics such as quote-mining and a dash of basic philosophy of science and I hope to have a decent book someone somewhere would want to read.  However, I've still got a ways to go I just started chapter 2.  I've also tried to keep enough wit and humor to keep it interesting - something people will want to read all the way through and not get bogged down in a mountain of technical information.

Fantastic, Squid!  Keep us up on how it's going!  The more and more I read on the topic, the more inspired I become.  I'm not surprised you have pursued the subject so voraciously.

For a relatively small place Cypress has a great selection of landscapes, a very beautiful place to take photos and all relatively close together.

Tell me, is it seen as acceptable to pick oranges from roadside trees where there is no obvious owner or to pick up wind fall fruit? When we were there there were tons of fruit going to waste all over the Island, or is it that the locals are just sick of oranges because there are so many?

lol I donno what others thing, but heck I do it! (I think everybody does it)
these fruits dont belong to anyone why go wasted?
I remember when I was a kid there was this awesome apricot tree in the way to school. We would all pick from it and by the end of the season there would be no more fruit left on it

Well being in a foreign country, from my perspective, I just didn't see anybody randomly picking fruit so I didn't try it. I did enjoy my trip to Cypress very much.

Quote from: "Squid"Right now I'm actually running through an old Line6 Guitar Port as an interface and using Line6 GearBox, PodFarm and Native Instruments Guitar Rig for effects and amp modeling.  My last band I had a Randall RG-75 half stack but it got sold during hard times.  So now I'm looking to save up and get either another Randall or maybe go with Peavey Vypyr 120 with a 4x12 cabinet as a half stack.  If I go with the Peavey I'll have the integrated effects and won't need any pedals but if I go with the Randall I'll probably save up and grab a Line6 Pod XT Live.  Now all I need is the cash... :headbang:
