Well, I don't really care all that much who wins. The only team I'm a supporter of is Brann (and Norway obviously). I'm a huge patriot when it comes to sport.  :P

Yeah, it was as bad as the USA giving up a Goal in the first 45 seconds of the game :P.. You have to give it to both Goal Tenders for some of the amazing saves they had in that game.. Though I worried that if England had lost that game, we would see London Bridges falling down and England on fire from a ravaging pissed off English Mob. :P

So what does it mean that we tied with England?

I'm confused on this more than learning the Metric System.

I find it ironic that America consistantly puts forth world class soccer players (football) yet as a nation remain about as apathethic to the sport as I would guess the world is towords America football (the rugby like one). Underfunded and pretty underapreciated and they still have the ability to piss off the world by being a top tier team.

If America really got stuck into soccer it would undoubtedly become a world beater. Given the population x the resources x the attitude = huge potential!

It's hard not to get caught up in the enormity of the World Cup, even for those who don't like sports a lot. It's so big and so ubiquitous. Plus, when family members have it on the TV all the time....well, then it's impossible to ignore.  :D

Well this is a chance to educate some of us. You'd be surprised the way people are getting into soccer now in the states. I am actually surprised that the US is even taking this much notice in our soccer team.

Protip: The World Cup shit was front page news for quite a few papers.

So perhaps we're actually moving to be another country in the world. Hell I am in favor of the metric system and I can guarantee I am not alone in the US for it.

Evidently the Sounders (my city's soccer team) has one of the most dedicated fan bases in the US, but I think it's because we recently lost our basketball team and were looking to fill a void the Sonics left behind.  (sniffle)  And compared to the rest of world, the most dedicated in the US might not mean much at all.  Still, people around here go ape shit over soccer.  I don't think it's as ignored in the US as people might think, but there still are plenty of people who snicker at the idea of soccer, as if it isn't even really a sport.  I think some people hold that position simply because it is HILARIOUS to watch a soccer fan flip out over someone bad mouthing the game though.  :D

So far so good. There've been one or two hiccups in SA but nothing too major I don't think. Bafana tied 1 - 1 with Mexico, which everyone is so proud about. I watched the game at a local fan park which was packed with about 6000 people. It was an absolute riot :D
The Ger - Aus slaughter was painful.
It's great to get involved. Up until Friday's first match I had never watched an entire soccer match in my life before.
I don't know how SA soccer fans compare to US soccer fans, but they go pretty bos (mad) over here as well.

With the same Arnie accent as well, it seems.

I thought the Italy game was a little boring. Italy were obviously playing for a draw... Doesn't make for interesting football.

Bring on Friday. England 5 - Algeria 0

I say bring on the Americans as a permanent world cup fixture!! We need someone to come along and shake it all up. You guys have shown in the past that if you put your mind to it, you will get bloody good at it. Within eight years you will be considered a quarter final team if you keep the current trend of rising popularity.

I think the new generation of Americans are even more connected to the world thanks to the advent of the web. Soccer has gotten incredibly popular especially here in Austin.

I must say, the US team are fricking awesome! They might not have the best players in the world but by golly do they have spirit! Any team who fights that hard, even in the face of such bad luck, deserves to see glory. I think they will get to the semi finals if they keep playing like that.

It might just be a passing-back fest. They are both already through. I hope it is a good game though.

I was cheering for Japan tonight. They were amazing, especially Honda. His free kick was Beckham-esque. They are certainly ones to watch because if they play like that again, they are finalist contenders.

One tends to think of the Japanese stereotype as rather dower and serious, but those players looked like they were really enjoying themselves, great to watch. And why did Italy only bother to play for 20 minutes?

England should be able to beat Germany, because:
1. they are still an inexperienced, young team
2. the German defense is weak
3. they don't have a "charismatic" striker, who is able to put fear in the hearts of the English

Basically, the 2006 German team was much better than the current team. The 2010 team is severely crippled by the absence of Micheal Ballack.

Quote from: "Tom62"England should be able to beat Germany, because:
1. they are still an inexperienced, young team
2. the German defense is weak
3. they don't have a "charismatic" striker, who is able to put fear in the hearts of the English

They did ok in the end Tom :(

In the first 35 minutes it looked like that the English team were fast asleep. When they were two goals behind, they finally woke up and put a lot of pressure on the Germans. That lasted till the first quarter of the 2nd half. The 2nd goal of England should never have been disallowed. The  whole world, including the Germans, find this a disgrace. I can't really blame the referee, because the ball went in and out the goal again with an enormous speed. But I do blame the FIFA, because with the help of technology this type of referee mistakes could be prevented.

Netherlands I hope but I think Germany will take the cup. Funny how Spain just didn't get into that equation. (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg268.imageshack.us%2Fimg268%2F7475%2Fteah.gif&hash=974e3ef02680bc29a956eeb3296cd6601baa8c94)

Nope. I want the Germans to win, it's not so bad if one goes out to the eventual champions.

But Tank...they're THE GERMANS.

They play some bloody good football, mind you. Wiped the floor with England, blew away Argentina. As the most exciting team in the tournament they probably deserve to win it.

But they're still the Germans, and I'm pulling for Holland.

So there.  :P

Spain is in the finals!!! Finally we've got two great teams playing, who never won the world cup before. Most of my German colleagues however, will be quite pissed off tomorrow  ;) .

Whelp, into the first of two 15 minute periods after regulation time... a record number of yellow cards and the lack of one very deserved red card.  :|

Yes indeed.

I started off pulling for the Netherlands but- ugh- they played some of the dirtiest football that I've seen.

Spain were great. Justice and superior skill prevailed.

Before the match i wanted Netherlands to win but after the first 30 mins of fouling by them i changed my mind. It was a despicable performance by the dutch.

Well done Spain. You guy's deserve this. You played with honour, integrity and passion.
