YouTube links must look like this if they are to work
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfFXH3VqcCM
They often start out looking something like this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfFXH3VqcCM&feature=PlayList&p=3AC234B7E49D31C7&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=2
If you look closely at the above you will see an '&', it and all the characters to its right need to be deleted if the link is to embed properly. So you delete the following.
&feature=PlayList&p=3AC234B7E49D31C7&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=2
So
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfFXH3VqcCM[/youtube]
gives

Thanks! Pinned.
(Great choice for an example vid)
Sometimes, when people post a youtube link, I just get a picture of a video window, that I cannot play. Is it the link or something wrong with my computer? For reference, the one you posted above works, and I use Chrome.

I'd search for the video that won't play directly in YouTube. If it will/won't play if you find it by search rather than link that may give you a clue to the root of the issue. Also post a link here if you have one so we can try.
The same thing said in a different way.
The first thing is to make sure is the link you are using is correct. YouTube links often have a lot of crap on the right hand end that needs to be stripped off before one adds the BBCode 'tags' that do the magic.
This link wont work because of the crap marked in red
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOVMHUxLeMI&feature=relatedThe bit you need to strip off is the
& and all the characters to its right which leaves this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOVMHUxLeMI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOVMHUxLeMI)
That just gets treated like a link that you can click on to go to the video. To make the video appear you need to add the BBCode tags
before and after the link so the whole assembly of link and tags looks like this.
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOVMHUxLeMI[/youtube]It must look exactly like that. Spaces or lines between the link and the tags bugger things up, for example:-
But with the right link and the tags correctly placed you should see this

Feel free to practice embedding on this thread.

i did it!!!!! It's the small things that keep me happy. Thanks Tank. Ironically, this may be my favorite song.
Somewhat ironic that embedding is disabled on that video

But I just clicked through and watched it anyway.
Quote from: "Tank"Somewhat ironic that embedding is disabled on that video :upset: Well at least I now know the formula thanks to you.

This tutorial is no longer valid.
Found this, was going to check it out for my personal forums to see if it was secure and worked well:
