Title: Craft Hobby Thread
Post by: Tank on June 11, 2010, 10:12:43 AM
Do you have a hidden talent like needlework or painting or some practical hobby that you do when you have the time and inclination?

This is the thread to sow and tell about the hobbies you have!

I still make plastic model kits...not very practical. But I do shoot and make my own bullets.

ahhhh...let me qualify that so y'all don't get the wrong impression. I do shoot and make my own bullets. I also shoot firearms and make/reload those bullets as well....*winkin*

Made tons of models as a kid. Made one as an adult, the German Pocket Battleship the Admiral Graf Spee. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_pocket_battleship_Admiral_Graf_Spee)

I can knit.  Nothing more complicated than scarves or granny squares, though.  :D

I also like to cook.  I consider that a crafty hobby, since I like to experiment.

This thread reminded me that I sold one of my budget etsy shop sets today....I would have totally forgotten to send it to the buyer tonight since my mind turned off after leaving my day job.

I do various types of crafty things...even though I have a shop it's just a hobby.  I don't plan on making a career out of it but a side project that I enjoy that occasionally makes money is nice.  My etsy:  www.archgrafix.etsy.com (http://www.archgrafix.etsy.com)

I'm into appreciating Bonsai trees...As for my own attempts - I always try to grow them from seeds, but the seedlings (after months of stratification) nearly always die, just after they sprout.  Maddening, really.

Nice!  Your kitties are lucky!  =D

(By that I mean, they're lucky you're willing to build things to keep them out of trouble.  My kitty gets into EVERYTHING and instead of doing the smart thing like you and making it more difficult for her to mess with my stuff, I just get grumpy.  Hahaha.  I realized my comment didn't really make sense on it's own.   :D )

Well, considering they think it's their new hammock, yeah you can call them lucky!  I've had to run off all 5 of the boys at least twice so far today.  I haven't used it in the room with the girls but I'm sure the one that can see to jump up on will in a matter of seconds.

I think I need to find the spray bottle so I can get this one side finished  :raised:  I have too many more to work on.....  The raven one, the skully one, and formulating an idea for an Alice one.......

I wish I knew how to quilt.  Or use a sewing machine!  So awesome.

I recently discovered my kitty is kookoo for paper mache glue.  Glue!  I'm no veterinarian, but I'm going to guess that kitties should avoid eating glue.  Hahaha.

They should also avoid spilling and rolling in the glue when you aren't around.  One of ours did that with jewelry glue and ended up at the vet to be shaved.

But I'm pretty sure my poetry really sucks.  Well, most of it.

I have a boatload of hobbies.  I write for a living but I also write for fun.  I draw, etch metal, carve, and make fondant cakes.  Additionally, I raise miniature starfish and keep a saltwater aquarium.  I also design and build saltwater aquarium gadgets like in-tank refugia for sale and for my own use. The funny thing is that tomorrow I'll probably remember a few more things I do that could be considered hobbies.

You can see some of my fondant cakes here. (http://www.squidoo.com/my_fondant_cakes)  I still have to put up a photo of the Abbey Road cake I made for my partner's 40th last month.

It looks very well made, no saggy bits or gaps. As to the purpose any support you can give your friend that buoys up her spirits is a good thing. She's going through enough grief at the moment without being told her world view is a load of BS. Best wishes to her and I hope the medication does its job.

OK...Mines pretty lame. I do bead work. You remember those bead geckos and things? I do that with Gay Pride stuff. I did a two sided triangle for pride, one side was the pink triangle, the other a triangular rainbow. I also did a rainbow bracelet and a PRIDE strip. If I had more beads I could do more, but...yea... :sigh: yea...Nothing compared to the others...

I did a ton of crafting stuff this weekend, including making cards for my mom and my sister for their birthdays, making stencils and then using them to paint my friend's bathroom walls with an Alice in Wonderland theme, and making a decoration for my bathroom wall out of an old metal tray.  The only picture I have handy is of the tray, but once I get pictures from the rest I'll post those too (if they come out - I had to use my cell phone camera which is eiiich...)

My fiancee tells me that I'm the most patient person she's ever met/known, but I'm inclined to disagree when it comes to crafts.

I sure wish I could get into it. I have really, really shaky fingers (just my natural disposition; a lot of people think I'm nervous! I'm not; I just have naturally shaky fingers/hands), and thus I screw up a lot of simple things when it comes to needlework, threading, etc.

Ah, I need to get my aunt to sign up here just so she can chat you all up about crafts, but she's not an atheist nor is she keyboard savvy. :pop:

Depends on the area, market, bird, age, etc..... anywhere from $1 a chick to $30 a laying hen.  For these the chicks are $2 and $3, the pullets are $10, about average out here.  If they don't sell.... I have a stew pot, for the older ones anyway.

Oh. I design tattoos. I used to draw characters, but I got into tattoos because I love to get inked. I have four right now, but I want more. The one that I'm proudest of is my "Survivor" tattoo. Those of you that read my post in "What's on your mind" know what that's about, so I won't get into it again. One of my favorite subject is Egyptology, it's really fascinating, so I have an eye of Horus, my first ever, with a tribal scarab that I want to get underneath it. The scarab took me about 2 hours to draw. The piece that took the longest to draw is on my left shoulder, and its called "The Dragon's Flame". A fire colored tribal piece with Pagan symbols hiddin in it, and the Japanese kanji "Ryu" in the center. I have a Nile Goddess holding a dragon holding a star on my right forearm. These are from my Pagan days, all of about two and a half weeks ago. I would consider getting them covered if they were Christian, but seeing as how they aren't, they're good conversation starters.  In my book I have a tribal phoenix, or "Living Flame", a Tribal gay pride piece that's in the works, a skull, don't ask, and a few others rolling around in my head.

I also write poems, but I tend not to share, because they tend to be very angry, and I tend to transfer emotion rather well. In fact, someone once called my poetry "Vocabular Assault" because it hits you like a ton of bricks on a big rig, and doesn't slow down. Their words, not mine. That's about it.

Best way I could think to do it, if you want to try, is to vent. Think of something that gets you rip-roaring mad, and vent it. That's all my poems are.

One question: What does "vent" mean?

Expressing yourself in a cathartic way.  Usually people vent abut relationship issues, work problems, problems in general I guess.  If I were to tell you all about something that was on my mind, I'd be venting to you.  Especially if I told you because I felt like I needed to tell someone.  Does that make sense?

Vent could also equate to rant. Basically you're letting off steam.

To let the pressure off. In a boiler that is getting too much pressure and at risk of exploding one 'vents' the excess steam and thus the excess pressure.
