Title: Wolframalpha
Post by: Sophus on May 28, 2010, 01:12:25 AM
This is a neat website I stumbled across recently. It functions sort of like Wikipedia but for different purposes (data, etc.).

Wolfram is awesome. Type in 'a cubic light year of ice cream' and see what it says...

Mind boggling numbers. :)

I was watching for the Wolfram|Alpha release for a while before it officially was opened. The guy who developed it, Stephen Wolfram, wrote an amazing book called A New Kind of Science (http://amzn.to/aAfdl9) that the W|A concept is essentially based on. The Mathematica engine is absolutely astounding.

Some of the answers given are however completely wrong, for example the highest mountain in Italy is definitely not the Mont Blanc  ;)

Are you sure? I think it may be the highest mountain in Italy.

It's being argued over http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Blanc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Blanc)

The French and Swiss cartographers place it within France's boundaries on maps. That is what we also taught at school. The Italians however recently claimed that they own the Mont Blanc summit. Which basically means that it is a borderline case (figuratively and literally).

Here's a few good ones:

What do women want? (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=what+do+women+want) Read the parenthesis under the response. Seems this AI has a sense of humor.
How much wood would a woodchuck... (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=how+much+wood+would+a+woodchuck+chuck+if+a+woodchuck+could+chuck+wood)
All work... (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=all+work+and+no+play)
Lottery (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=how+do+i+win+the+lottery) And I was hoping for a real answer...

This site is really cool. Just pop in and say hello (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=hello).
