Really want to see Through the wormhole with Morgan Freeman BUT.... I don't get the Science channel
If MASH is on, I probably have the TV on, love that show.
Via "alternate means", so I don't always know the networks:
Discovery- Mythbusters
- Nature-Tech
- Various docu-specials
BBC- Horizons
- Various docu-specials
- Doctor Who
National Geographic stuff
Junk-food TV- All the CSIs (Nice and silly!)
- All the Law & Orders (More dramma, plenty of silly)
- NCIS/NCIS LA (I want to be Ziva when I grow up.)
- Bones (ibid & Emily Deschanel)
- COPS (I call it my "twenty minutes of stupid" )
- Fringe (Only because of Anna Torv) (Ok, not only, I love cheesy sci-fi)
- Nurse Jackie
I really should add Nova to my list up there.....
I'm currently watching Sliders over again on Hulu then NetFlix for the last seasons, I used to love that show.
Well not currently right now, but like an episode or two at night when I'm programming.
I just wasted my time on watching the semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Every day I watch The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. He feels like family to me.
I'm also going through all of That Mitchell and Webb Look.
Pretty much anything I can stream to my xbox on my famiy's netflix account. It's a pretty sweet deal if you get the unlimited streaming movies.

I'm not really watching TV, rather, i'm downloading anything worth watching because i'm violently opposed to adverts. I may, however, watch some of the upcoming World Cup on the BBC because the BBC rules (i usually use Iplayer for my BBC fix).

I dunno, I've always felt that Craig is a bit more intellectual than the others. He reminds me a lot of what Mike Meyers said: “There is no high humor or low humor. It's grown on me. I was happy to hear that it was coming back. My fiancé HATES Captain Jack Harkness. Hahaha.
Torchwood: Captain Jack is OK but that bloody Owen is annoying, selfish prat.
Anyway to raise the tone if this series passes your way it's worth watching.
Starts of in Rome, and ends up in England.
I like the presenter.
BAROQUE: FROM ST PETERS TO ST PAULS
In the final episode, Waldemar Januszczak explores the English Baroque, from the Queen's House at Greenwich to how the great fire of London led to a boom in Baroque architecture, and culminating in a visit to iconic St Pauls.

The IT crowd is back with a new series
Best thing since Black Books.
Mythbusters is about the only thing I make a point of watching at the minute.
I watched Harry and Paul last night and it was actually not bad - more Fast Showish than the last series. And yeah IT Crowd is good - but i've seen this series so I won't spoil it for you.

I like Dexter, but does anyone wonder about liking a friendly psychopath?
The vigilante hero has been around forever, but this does take it another step.
Quote from: "The Magic Pudding"I like Dexter, but does anyone wonder about liking a friendly psychopath?
Nope. He does shit I've only fantasized about and he found a way (well, was given a way by his stepfather) to mitigate the immorality of the whole thing. I'm a little jealous.
Quote from: "The Magic Pudding"I like Dexter, but does anyone wonder about liking a friendly psychopath?

Just because he butchers criminals and Spiderman throws them on a web?
No, I know what you mean. I think that's the shows intent is to make you feel like you can't tell right from wrong. He may be a psychopath but the way I see it he doesn't do anything wrong. At least not in his adult life.
Should we move the Dexter talk to The Dark Passenger thread?
I think he is doing wrong, but this is overlooked because he is disposing of bad people.
An individual judging and executing evil doers is wrong, even if it is satisfying.
If Dexter was caught and punished that would be right, but hopefully not for a while.

Who is more in the wrong? Dexter or Harry for coming up with idea and the "code"?
Quote from: "Sophus"Who is more in the wrong? Dexter or Harry for coming up with idea and the "code"?
Harry may have had experience with killers, but his assumption Dexter would develop an addiction to murder is suspect.
Couldn't he have got him a job at an abattoir?
I was listening to a doco about a guy who was taking part in a program for paedophiles.
He witnessed his father murder his mother in a particularly gruesome manner at the age of nine I think.
The state then sent him off to an institution where he was abused in various awful ways.
Anyway the result for him was he became a "low level" paedophile, who seems to have responded to treatment, not a rampant serial killer.
Australia has received a lot of survivors of African atrocities, the lopping of limbs and slaughter of families.
I don't know what the best practice is for looking after them, I don't think it involves channelling murderous instincts against those deserving of death.
But it is just a TV series/books.
Quote from: "The Magic Pudding"Harry may have had experience with killers, but his assumption Dexter would develop an addiction to murder is suspect.
That, my friend, is like the Eagles in LOTR: it doesn't make sense, but if they did what made sense there'd be no show.
QuoteCouldn't he have got him a job at an abattoir?
Those aren't always easy to get.
Quote from: "PoopShoot"That, my friend, is like the Eagles in LOTR: it doesn't make sense, but if they did what made sense there'd be no show.
The Eagles make perfect sense, they are an allegorical reference to the USA's late entry into the WW1.

Not really watching anything on television, other than South Park. Things that I watch online are Penn & Teller: Bullshit, and a few other animated shows.
I never really cared for south park, though the video game for the n64 was good fun. I watched the movie, once or twice however.
I didn't like South Park until I met my better half who LOVES the show and watches it all the time. Now, I really like it. The characters are pretty well developed later in the series and they do a really good job of making points without being too sanctimonious or pretentious, which I appreciate. I also love cartoons though, so that effects my judgement of the show as well.

QuoteLast Chance to See is a 1989 BBC radio documentary series and its accompanying book, written and presented by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine. In the series, Adams and Carwardine travel to various locations in the hope of encountering species on the brink of extinction. The book was published in 1990.
In 2009, the BBC aired a television follow-up series of the same name, with Stephen Fry replacing the late Adams.[

I've recently discovered and caught up to the live broadcasts of
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. I'm curious if anyone else is watching this?
According to Wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Increasingly_Poor_Decisions_of_Todd_Margaret)
Quote from: "Wiki"The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret is a sitcom starring David Cross produced by IFC and RDF Television. It is about an American (Cross) who takes a job running the sales team at the London branch of his company, but who has no experience of British culture, knows nothing about sales, and has only one employee. The show was created and written by Cross and Shaun Pye.
Each episode begins with a scene of Margaret appearing as the defendant in a British court, with various charges against him being read, then flashes back to portray the events leading to Margaret's arrest. Each episode advances the plot in the flashbacks by exactly one day, usually beginning in the morning and ending in the evening. The pilot takes place two weeks before the scene in the courtroom and the first season takes place over one week, ending one week before the courtroom scene.
The first season premiered October 1, 2010 on IFC in the U.S.; it is scheduled to air on More4 in the U.K. from November 14th 2010.
I'm about as clueless about British culture as the character in the show, but there seems to be some crude humor (including a smearing of a Rememberance Day parade to sell energy drinks) and I'm curious if it is viewed as overly offensive to Brits. However, it is my style to appreciate over-the-top offensive humor, and this show is funny.
The Walking Dead. That show is freaking awesome.

I can't afford HBO in my cable package, so I'm missing out on Boardwalk Empire, but I'll hopefully catch up with it on DVD as soon as it's released. I love me some Steve Buscemi.

I dont watch much tv anymore. I do watch a heavy metal music show every sunday midnight, a satirical talk show every weekday midnight, and documentaries on discovery, national geographic, history channel. From those, I enjoy the universe, how its made and top gear from the top of my head. I also watched a history channel series about gods and religions.

I'm watching old episodes of Jiskefet on YouTube. Very silly dutch humour.
Breaking Bad
I've discovered the show Impractical Jokers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFdKbAgMhMo&feature=youtube_gdata_player). It's a hidden camera show where four friends take turns in situations where one person is "it" and has to do or say what the other three, watching on monitors and connected by a wireless earpiece, tell him to. The results are hilarious.

Hah! True. However, I'm impressed by their ability to tell a remarkably compelling story with characterization practically unknown in the televised version of the genre at the time, and all this with a budget significantly less than that of a typical sitcom of the time.

The chap who played Blake was a bit of a thesp'. Unfortunately after two(?) series he got fed up and buggered off so for a long time the key storyline became failed attempts to find him.

- America's Funniest Videos
That's about it, really. I'm more a movie and book person, but if I'm going to watch TV, I'd prefer to either learn something or laugh, or connect with others' stories on an emotional level... cause I'm girly like that. :P

The above are in no particular order, but they are the show's I watch weekly, or simply watch regularly to catch up.
I've been watching Big Bang Theory, American Idol, Two and a Half Men (old with Sheen and new with Kutcher, prefer Sheen better for some reason), America's Funniest Videos reruns... and the odd episode of Property Virgins or Househunters on HGTV.
I just watched the 1964 movie Becket.
QuoteThe tale of Thomas Becket has had many incarnations over time (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057877/reviews). T.S. Eliot's 'Murder in the Cathedral' is but the most recent acclaimed literary treatment; each revisitation seems to draw new elements forth from the story. Edward Anhalt won the Oscar for best screenplay (adapted from other material) for this film. This film shows Henry and Thomas Becket roughly equal in age (at variance from history, for in this time the age difference of 15 years is practically a generational difference). Becket is shown as being a guide to Henry, but less from a master/pupil standpoint as it is a clever diplomatic with a utilitarian and almost Machiavellian sense about him. Henry is presented as coarse and unrefined, uneducated and in need of assistance, but historically this is unlikely.
The movie has Becket as Archbishop objecting to a priest being subject to the law for rape. The church had the right to deal with their own and wanted it kept that way. Sounds outrageous from a modern perspective. I suppose as church and crown shared rights to use and control people like livestock its understandable.
You have Richard Burton wandering about talking to god asking questions, probably imagining answers. Ye this kind of thing is common but it still looks crazy to me.
The idea expressed that the church has the power to excommunicate someone and that damns their
sole soul seems extremely repulsive to me. The church speaks for god, if you do something against them you act against god. Very convenient that.
I did enjoy the movie, Peter O'Toole overacts a bit at times but he's pretty cool.
Edited 'cause BooksCatsEtc was making fun of my misuse of words.

I don't know, better than the whole body being damned I think.
Right now I'm watching the newest Mythbusters - we record it on the DVR. Earlier, I watched the latest Nova. Yes, I am a nerd. ;D
An add I just heard is the first I've hear of this.
Why wasn't I told?
QuoteDirk Gently operates his Holistic Detective Agency based on the "fundamental interconnectedness of all things", which relies on random chance methods to uncover connections between seemingly-unrelated cases. He claims that he follows the principles of quantum mechanics, and although the majority of his clients suspect he may be a conman he often produces surprising results. With the help of his assistant, Richard MacDuff, Dirk investigates a number of seemingly unrelated but interconnected cases.
An hour-long pilot episode loosely based on plot elements from Adams' 1987 novel Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency was broadcast on BBC Four on 16 December 2010 and was watched by 1.1 million viewers. Critical reception was generally positive.[1] A full series of three one-hour episodes was subsequently commissioned in March 2011 and was broadcast on BBC Four in March 2012.[2] The series is the first continuing drama series produced for the digital channel.
I've seen one episode of the below, I know him as the goth kept in the IT Crowd store room. I liked the first episode, pretty out their psychedelic stuff.
QuoteNoel Fielding's Luxury Comedy is a British sketch television series written and directed by Noel Fielding and Nigel Coan. The series stars Fielding, his brother Michael Fielding, Tom Meeten, and Dolly Wells. Various guest stars also appear, including Rich Fulcher and Richard Ayoade, and it features numerous members of The Mighty Boosh.[1] The first episode premiered on 26 January 2012 on E4.[2] The music was written by Kasabian's Sergio Pizzorno, a good friend of Fielding's.[1]
Prior to the creation of the Luxury Comedy, Fielding had worked in a double act with comedian Julian Barratt as The Mighty Boosh. Together, Fielding and Barratt produced a series of stage shows, a radio series, and a television series between 1998 and 2008. Going their separate ways, Fielding became a team captain on Never Mind the Buzzcocks from 2009, and also began co-operating on a new sketch show with Coan. The show originally had the provisional title Noel Fielding: Boopus.
TT Closer To The Edge
I just finished watching the complete Sapphire and Steel series on DVD. Great intelligent Science Fiction from the 1980's, but a bit outdated and slow.
I just got caught up on Fringe. The show started off awful, but got really interesting midway through the first season. Now it has 12 more episodes for season 5 and will disappear like all the other good science fiction shows.
I remember why I stopped watching sci-fi tv now. The "sci-fy" channel plays crap like "dinocroc vs supergator" and WWE.

Fox cancelled Firefly after one season, Stargate Atlantis was cancelled before it's time, and Caprica was cancelled after only one season.
It's annoying as hell. As soon as these shows find their rhythm the networks cancel them. I hope HBO or Showtime pick up a good sci-fi series in the near future. They can afford to let them loose a little bit of money until they find their footing and start turning a profit.

I really liked Fringe the first couple of seasons...but it got boring. I quit watching after, I think it was, season 3.
Spartacus: Loved this show. Unfortunately the lead actor died of cancer after the first season, I couldn't (and still can't) wrap myself around the actor that took it over. Just not the right fit for the character IMHO, but it works. The sex scenes are a bit much at times, but apparently inline with Roman life...eh. I'm anxiously awaiting season 3.
Game of Thrones: I was hooked from the first episode. Watching season 1 again as Season 2 is underway just to refresh my memory of all the relationships/familys interaction.

Season three is now on here.
It has lost something with the replacement actor, the loss of Batiatus and survival of Lucy Lawless. Hopefully it will pick up though.
It's funny how people are OK with murderous violence but are bothered by forbidden female body parts. :)

I stoped watching the series after the actor died, it just didn't feel right but those who did watch it thought that the season was brilliant, maybe I should check it out. For some reason I never have had a problem with sex scenes in film/tv/games and give extra credit to Spartacus for the scenes as they weren't all mixed gender so kudos to them. That reminds me of the film Troy and they changed Achilles male lover to his cousin, wtf!

Ye I sought the wisdom of the oracles (wiki) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achilles_and_Patroclus) on that matter, seems you define their relationship to suit your story/audience.
Watching Tactical Response's "Fighting Pisol" Part 2 on the PC while waiting for my chicken to cook so I can shred it to make BBQ Chicken Sandwiches ;D
Watching The Voice. We're into the live knock out rounds and there are some really talented vocalists.
I really liked Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Gods of the Arena. Our neighbor got us into the show. (He even had a Spartacus-themed party last year, complete with a makeshift arena and wood swords--it was quite impressive.) Have only seen two episodes of the season with the new guy. They've been okay, but I agree with you, AD, that the new actor doesn't seem quite right for the role.
I quite enjoy the gratuitous soft-porn sex scenes, but sometimes the gore in the fighting scenes is a little much. Overall, though, the over-the-top comic-book feel of the show is pretty damn cool.

The HGTV house hunter shows are totally addictive. I could probably watch 50 episodes in a row given the chance.
Anyone watching The Killing on AMC? It's a dark murder-mystery set in Seattle, US (based on an earlier Scandinavian series). The actress who plays the main detective is amazing. http://www.amctv.com/shows/the-killing (http://www.amctv.com/shows/the-killing)

Unlike some I never rated Lucy Lawless as hot in Zena Warrior Princess but she has matured into a really sexy woman in Spartacus.

Took me till the second season to realise who she was.
Jane Eyre, the one with Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine. I'd seen it before but hadn't realized until now that Jane childhood friend was played by Elizabeth Taylor.

Is this one your favorite of the film adaptations?
The Big Lebowski.
It's got everything, well it doesn't have Nazis but it does have German Nihilists which is more original anyway. The Dude Walter and Donnie, what else could you ask for?
Lars Von Trier - Melancholia.
I have high hopes that it will cheer me up.
I'm watching the back to the future trilogy
Just watched 'The Artist' and enjoyed it very much.
I rented Cool Hand Luke on Bluray yesterday and watched it for probably the tenth time. It's definitely a top 10 movie for me, one of those that I resist watching until I can't stand it anymore. It is however a movie that I can talk about with friends ad nauseum...lol. The depth of the character development and the complexity of the storyline is something that I miss I suppose in a film industry that seems to have become overly dependant on CGI and big explosions or a truckload of violence to put butts in seats.
An overgeneralization of the current film industry I know, but sometimes it sure feels like it's true.
The Magnificent Seven. I'd forgotten how much I liked this movie.
I've been looking for some ideas on new things to watch - so glad I found this thread. I'm going to check out some of the shows listed. I'm just finishing season three of "Doc Martin". I tend to watch stuff on my computer over tv and it's up on netflix. I'm really enjoying that one. I've also just started watching "Breaking Bad". The last movie I watched aside from The Avengers in the theater was the 2008 production of "Skin". I highly recommend it.
The Wire. It must be the 8th time I have watched all 5 seasons back to back.
I just watched Thirteen Ghosts last night. Fun little horror flick. :)

I cancelled my cable TV about a year ago because I just wasn't watching it anymore. Everything that I want to see I can find on the Web.
Netflix has a bunch of terrific TV series available for streaming, and a lot of great old movies but not a lot of new movie content. I'm sure that has to do with the licensing cost, but no problem as I also do the 2 DVDs at a time option.
I watched "The Hunter" with Willem Dafoe a couple of nights ago. The storyline was a bit underwhelming and a little treehuggy (not that that's a bad thing) and the ending was sad but it was worth a watch. Dafoe turned in his usual terrific performance and I really liked the little blond malnourished kid, she was a hoot!
I was really peeved at netflix yesterday - I'd just finished season 2 of Doc Martin and they pulled everything but the first season. This is the second time availability changed on me while I was watching a series. Luckily for me, I have Amazon Prime and was able to start watching Doc Martin again there.
My queue is getting full with all these great ideas for stuff to watch!
I'm watching Thomas The Tank Engine. I don't like it, but it keeps monkey-boy quiet. Now if it were Ivor The Engine I'd quite enjoy it.

The fifth season of Breaking Bad--good stuff. Bisbell, I'm jealous that you still have several seasons to look forward to.
Im watching full metal alchemist-brotherhood. After reading the books I decided to watch the movies

personally I found the ceremony meh-ish. However I missed the lighting of the torch thingy and I am now looking to see it online.
I've been watching my way through Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected, a DVD version of the TV show that aired in the late 70s-late 80s. Just stories with odd, unexpected endings, based on short stories he wrote. They're pretty good, odd little shows. :)
(As a total aside since it's nothing I'm watching, Dahl's children's books have always had a distinctly Tim-Burtonesque feel to them for me. Or maybe I should say Burton's stuff has a Dahlish feel.)

I think The Borgias is a Showtime production, they have been making television that is catching up with HBO. HBO are just in a league of there own when it comes to television, I would be surprised if any other network did anything that even comes close to The Wire.

Quote Linda Cristal, real name Marta Victoria Moya Burges, was born February 25, 1934 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She had gone into semi-retirement to raise her two sons, when John Wayne coaxed her out to do the part of Flaca in his epic The Alamo in 1960. After that, she took assignments only as the whim struck.
Linda was the last main cast member to be added to The High Chaparral, and she got the part through sheer determination and perseverance. David Dortort had been auditioning actresses for three weeks, seeking just the right person with stunning good looks and a fiery personality, who could breathe life into the aristocratic Victoria Montoya, and he had just about given up hope of ever finding the right person. When Linda finally heard about the part, her agent thought the role had already been cast, but she urged him to check, and history was made. She is alive and well, living in California, and enjoying retirement.
