As any of you in English universities will know, we are coming to the end of exam season now. Today, at 2:30, I had my last ever exam, final exam of Masters degree. There was no space in the exam hall for me, so I had to take it in a spare room in the department, supervised by one of the professors. I turn up at 1:30, plenty of time in hand, enough to confirm everything is ok, then go have a coffee and load up on carbs to get me through the exam (I find the effort of thinking that hard, for that long to be physically draining sometimes).

I bounce into the office of the guy who's responsibility it is to give me the exam, only for him to tell me the exam is tomorrow, now, I am all up for a laugh, but not really before exams. So, I keep telling him not to mess with me, "ha ha ha, very funny, can I do the exam now?", only for him to to keep insisting it is tomorrow. He shows me the front of the paper (order and excitation in condensed matter, fun), then points to his calender, the paper said the the exam was on the 21st, Friday, and the calender in his office said today was Thursday the 20th. At this point, we had already had a little back and forth, and I was stressed by exam prospect and sleep sacrificed for revision, so accused him of printing off a falsified calender (!), just to tease me.

After he finally convinced me (I asked the librarians for the date, and bought a paper as well, just to be sure afterwards), I apologised, and left feeling like a complete tit. If I can't even turn up on the right day, my chances of interpreting the vagaries of phonon dispersion relations does not look good. . .

So, my question is, What was the last time you were left thinking "So. . . . Fuck"?

P.S. He got his own back, by flipping through the exam in front of me, not letting me see it and offering little gasps or winces at the difficulty of the questions.

I missed a job interview once and turned up as bright as ninepence the day after I should have  

Think of it this way: at least you didn't come a day late.
I always think "I'm I sure that it's today?" even though I've trippled checked. I don't think I've ever showed up for anything a day early though.

I slept through a final exam my first semester as an undergrad.

I missed the exam because I was sleeping, not because I fell asleep while taking the exam. ;-)

I got an A in the class and I have a MA in philosophy, so I guess you could say it worked out okay.

How do you get an A while missing the exam?

I did that - missed a final.  I ruined my perfect GPA (for which I'd worked incredibly hard to keep through some very difficult courses) on a class that I could have slept through and passed with flying colors.  It took me a long time to get over that.
