I came into work this morning to find a poster for a local god event stuck to the wall next to my desk. I work in an open-plan office but the only people who know of my beliefs and views are the people who sit closest to me, whom i also consider friends. They are all of the same world-view as me. They all deny knowledge of how the poster got there (although one of them could be lying).. I'm usually quite conscious of who can see my screen and anything displayed on it. I'm here to work, not offend people :)
Anyone heard of or read the book 'The reason for god' before? The person setting out the case for the christian faith is the author of that book. I hope there's a Q and A session.
Hmmm... hadn't heard of the book before, but it looks popular.
Based on the following review, I wouldn't think it's going to change your mind:

The reviewer thinks science is not philosophy?
Could the pamphlet have been placed there as a joke? A little friendly teasing?
I was wondering the same thing. Or maybe it was meant in earnest, in hopes to ensure atheism would be well represented at the event.

or, karadan is such a nice person that the person who posted the flier thought he was a good christian and would appreciate having the flier next to his desk.

I'm a cashier at my job and I talk to alot of people. It's been funny and annoying because I'll have sweet old ladies say things like, "oh you seem like such a nice christian boy" and shit like that because I'm very polite and good at my job. They will hand me pamphlets for their church and say things like "god bless" and "jesus loves you" as they walk away. As soon as they do something like that to me, it makes any compliment that they gave me suddenly seem disingenuous. It's just so presumptuous to think that just because someone is friendly and hard-working that they are a "good christian." One of these days, when I no longer need the job, I can't wait to just say "nope, I'm an atheist" to one of them. Don't wanna do it know cause lord knows it'll offend them and my ass will get fired. It would also probably give some of these old people a heart attack to know that they called an evil god-hating demon such as myself a "good christian." [/rant]

I used to be a cashier back in the day and the same thing would happen to me. I had one old lady that said the exact same thing to me and I smiled and said, "No ma'am i'm agnostic" (because at that time I was going through my agnostic phase, I was really an atheist but agnostic just sounded nicer). Those pamphlets you get are the most annoyingly stupid things you can get. I used to read them for a good laugh ... but most of the time i'd toss them. One of our supervisors at the time told me a funny story ... she made the announcements before the store would close. She'd make it started a half hour before we closed and then 15 minutes before and every 5 minutes after that. Well about 10 minutes after we closed 2 old bastards walked up with a 6 pack of soda, after drinking 2 from it (the registers were already taken and counted) so she had to get a register back from the safe and ring them up and they tried to give her a jesus pamphlet ... With the most pissed off look she could manage she took it, said thank you, and threw it away right in front of them. Which is what we always wished we could do.

I have a story that goes along with that rant. :D

It took a bit of arm twisting but i found out who it was. You were right, it was a mate of mine but not the person i suspected.

That's awesome but everyone here is afraid of being sued, including me :)

In college, walking through the commons area, there were peddlers handing out fliers, for Jesus and otherwise. I would always grab it, and tell them "You bet, I'll throw this away for you."
Stopped them in their tracks every time.
Hismikeness
I don't know about you guys but I *love* Christian pamphlets, I always take them when they're offered. I've even gotten an audio CD from a group of Mennonites. They're always just so funny, you never know what kind of insanity they're going to have in them. Will this one be about the end of the world? Gay marriage? How other religions worship Satan so it's okay to treat them like subhumans? It's like taking a chocolate from a box in which one of the candies is laced with a laxative and you don't know which one it is. My favorites are the people who hand out Chick Tracts.
Or better yet is the van I sometimes see driving around Water Tower Place. It's literally covered with Christian bumper stickers and has speakers mounted to the roof. It just drives around the North Loop area playing sermons.

Ewww, look at his arguments for hell in another one of his books:
Quote1.Sin is slavery.
2.Hell is less exclusive than so-called tolerance.
3.Christianity's view of hell is more personal than the alternative view.
4.There is no love without wrath.
The last one makes me sad that people really think this.
