Title: Religion and magnetism
Post by: igosaur on February 19, 2010, 07:49:06 PM
Scientists have been able to induce religious experiences and sensations in people by applying a weak magnetic field over their temporal lobes which makes me wonder if there are certain areas of the planet where the magnetic fields are configured in such a way as to make the people living there more susceptible to religious thoughts and delusions than others living in more magnetically stable areas.

By no means am I suggesting that this is the only reason but, in part, it might explain why there are deeply religious hot spots like Texas for example.

Not that I know of.  Though people claim there are energy lines in the earth and when they converge on a city you can go into the spirit world... or some garbage like that.  The brain is a marvelous thing, and maybe if we are lucky doctors and scientists can develop a surgery to cure people of their religious convictions... we can only hope ^_^

I dunno.  I recently had an enclosed MRI (a very strong magnetic field), but I don't think I had a religious experience.  I did feel like I was in a coffin though and it sounded like they were nailing it shut with a jack hammer. (Those that had them will know what I mean.) :)

The Earth's field is very, very weak, 10^(-5) tesla roughly, compared to a fridge magnet, which is over 100 times that, I can't imagine it doing much.

Only looking up the strength of a fridge magnet, I found the highest field created on earth to be 2800Tesla, which was made with explosives, I would love to know how you use explosives to make a strong magnet field, some sort of implosion device?

I would assume nukes ie; the resulting EMP.

Hasn't anyone here watched Ghosthunters?  lol

Further research has revealed what they used. Not nuclear, but the most awesomely named thing ever. An explosively pumped flux compression generator.

Is that anything like a Flux Capacitor?  Cause I really want one of those.

Thatnks for that. It is freaking awesome! I love the fact it can only be used once because it explodes itself.  :hail:

(Taken driectly from wikipedia).
"An EPFCG can be used only once as a pulsed power supply since the device is physically destroyed during operation. An EPFCG package that could be easily carried by a person can produce pulses in the millions of amperes and tens of terawatts, exceeding the power of a lightning strike by orders of magnitude. They require a starting current pulse to operate, usually supplied by capacitors."
