Hi there people! I'm Christy- a name that apparently translates in Gaelic as 'Christ-Like', which I like to think is ironic.

I come from the suberbs of London, England. My parents are old hippies for which I am immensely greatfull. I'd like to be a professional writer one day, with a particular interest in Sci-Fi and historical fiction. I like cats although mine don't seem to like each other.
I think I first started to doubt the religious belief espoused by my friends and teachers when I was about 12 or 13; It occured to me that everything in the Bible surely couldn't be accurate given the amount of time and different editions, translations etc. Being somewhat obsessive-complusive at that time, it seemed an affront to have to base my lifestyle on potentially innacurate instructions, particuly if strict adherance was the only sure form of salvation as some claimed. Since my parents never really induced me to be religious it wasn't too hard to break away from that kind of thinking, but I was never really vocal on the subject until a few years ago when Prof. D turned up on our television.
Since he put it all so neatly I've gotten far more involved with atheism, enjoying atheist books, blogs and podcasts, and last year I attended the Intelligence2 debate on 'Is the Catholic Church a Force for Good', and got to see Stephen Fry and 'The Hitch' in the flesh.
Anyway thats pretty much me, I'm glad to be here and look forward to chatting with you folks!

Hi Christy...good to see you here
You got to see Stephen Fry? Super cool. I'm a bit Q.I fan but I have to download all the episodes because we don't get it in SA. Fail.
Welcome, I hope you have a great time, this is a lovely forum
Hi Christy!
Welcome to the furum. I'm new too, so I look forward reading more of your posts.
I am a new member.Hope to share a good time.
Salutations Christy!
Nice to see another Brit on the boards. You'll like it here, i'm sure. There's certainly a lot of cat and sci-fi lovers perusing the boards, myself included.
welcome to the forums. im a dog kinda guy, but sci fi (what i call good sci fi) has always intrigued me. i like the idea of little hidden gems of political opinions and what not.
again welcome.
Hi
I'm so jealous of you attending that debate. It was because of that, that I organised a trip to the 'Is atheism the new fundamentalism' debate with Richard Dawkins for some of the members of the atheist forum I'm an admin on.
It was good, but I get the feeling that yours was better.
Oh, and welcome along.
Hi Christy-----So far all I've done is stand here at the door welcoming people in. If that's all I ever do here I'll be happy. And maybe that's all I need out of this experience. It's exciting for me to know that the whole world isn't crazy and I have real allies out there. So welcome--do come in.
