i need a job.  my boss is psycho.   (my boss -> )  any ideas for a mama who would like to pick her daughter up from school each day at 2:45?

What kind of experience do you have? What are your interests? Am I a bad moderator for not knowing the answers to these questions?  

Is your boss a religious psycho, or just a psycho?

Can you work from home at all?

i'd love to work from home.  got any viable ideas?

oh, and as for interests - i love books, philosophy, science (especially physics and outer space), and the social sciences.  i have quite a few hobbies - cake/cookie decorating (though i've worked in the only cake decor retail store in town and left because of the management; starting my own place making cakes is too expensive, and working for a bakery elsewhere is monotonous and backbreaking - so that option is out), quilting, crafting, comics, and interior design.

i'm not really a people person, but i can fake it.  (i like people.  love them as a concept.  but social anxiety stresses me out.)

I would suggest security work. The pay is decent and the work is really nothing more than creating a facade of security and doing customer service to usually professionals (lawyers, accountants, etc.). Believe me, they scrape the bottom of the barrel when they hire most guards so if they find a very competent and intelligent one they try to retain you if they are not retarded.

The best thing is you can actually study and work a schedule that could suit your kid's as well. Let's say You work a shift that goes from 6-2, you can still pick up your kid from school and do anything you needed to before needing to hit the hay.

A word of caution, not every site let's you study and often security guards tend to be...well let's just say somewhat religious in nature. However, companies do not tolerate harassment at all since liability is the reason security exists.I carry a recorder on me at all times when I work with certain people just to have any evidence of it.

The key with security tests (yes, they issue aptitude tests now to weed out really dumb people, I'm not kidding about this) is if you are even average intelligence you'll pass with flying colors.

I'm not trying to harp the praises of security but it isn't the worst job in the world. It has decent pay, resistance to recession (actually it thrives in bad times), and you will always find work. What state do you live in? I see Austin but is that by chance Austin, TX? If so I can refer you to my company.

my hubby would chuckle at the security suggestion, though.  i'm about the least intimidating person you'll ever meet.  i might look into it, though.  i'm quite the night owl.

That's the biggest misconception about security. It's not about being intimidating but excelling at having a very good professional demeanor. If we have a problem (say this crazy homeless person we find on camera or patrol) we call the police. Guards only do the following core things: Observe, Report, Detect, and Deter.

yesterday was the last straw for me; she berated my coworker loudly (the entire office could hear) for something that she did not do.  the boss screwed up, lied about it to make it seem as though my friend was at fault, and humiliated her in front of everyone.  and my friend stood there and took it - and was made to appologize.  she can't afford to quit until she finds a new job.

Rather than you having to find a new job, why don't you get together with your coworkers, go over your boss's head, and tell her bosses what is really going on.  I bet they don't like being lied to any more than you all like getting blamed from someone else's mistakes.

Good point, Whit. That's what I'm doing right now to guy who has been at my site for almost a decade. He likes to make everyone else look bad by making up things like doors found unlocked and such. We have banded together and got him busted for sleeping on the job, wearing these sunglasses at the desk, and essentially exposing what a piece of crap he is. He now is close to being fired for some sexual harassment issues that came up recently.

If your company has a tipline, feel free to use it. Often people like that get away with their little shithead antics because no one in a position of authority knows about it.

I'm not very good socially, or at manual labor. My math skills are above average in some areas, but nothing to be proud about. My best skills lie in my ability to use words on the written page. I'm great at writing.

I think you should get a job in security since it apparently pays well, has flexible hours, and often allows study...then finish up college at the same time.  There frankly aren't many good jobs out there if you don't have a degree; especially right now when those with degrees are out of work (including myself).

I'm not exactly fat, but I'm not all that physically fit either. Do they train you?

You've seen security guards, right? The only physical requirements are the ability to walk around and up stairs and basically nothing like epilepsy or some condition that would prevent you from working an 8 hour shift with little or no supervision.

If you live in Austin and need a job like that I can refer you to my company. They are always hiring. In fact every company almost always is. Sites pop up and they need personnel constantly.

I'm just wondering how many of us are unemployed from this economy?  I've not been able to find work with my degree.  I think Will said a month ago he was unemployed and now Whitney, Renegnicat, and jrosebud ... who else here?

im without a job too. Although I think in my case, its my choice of studies that is to blame...

My work is always hiring.  I work as an insurance agent for Aflac.  You will be able to make your own schedule.  The bad and good thing about it is that it is commission only.  They commission is great though.  I have been with them for 2 months and I have made around $3000.  That is not to bad considering I have been spending more time on fb and forums than actually working   .  Let me know if you have any questions.  I will give you all of the ups and downs that I've seen so far.

I would, but the boss is crafty.  She's a lawyer.  And there's a reason she was nicknamed "The Pitbull" when she worked in Washington.

It's our word against hers.  She's been careful not to put anything in writing.

And my coworker won't speak up.  She can't afford to lose her job until she finds something else.  (In the past she helped a "friend" with marketing for her business.  All of her deals were made verbally.  She racked up a ton in cell phone and travelling charges.  She helped grow the business substantially, but never saw a dime.  Did she go after the friend for months worth of wages?  Nope.)

Also, we're support for the boss.  If the boss goes, we aren't needed.

And I was hired as a temp.  If I speak up, the work will probably slow and I'll be let go.

Really, it's not worth the headache.  Right now I'm hanging on until my friend finds a new job.  As soon as she does, I'm sure that my services will no longer be needed (as my friend will be seen as a traitor and the boss won't want me there.)

I may need more information on that.  I have some work coming in soon but I don't know how long it will last.  It sounds like I could do the above on top of my normal work.

Well, you will have to get your insurance license first.  The test is hard and the price will vary from state to state.  Indiana's was $95 when I took it 4 years ago.  The job requires a lot of cold calling, which sucks.  The hardest thing is to get past the company owner.  Once you present to the employees the policies sell themselves.  About 60% will buy.  The commission is 40% of the yearly premiums.  The first year is really hard.  It was a month and a half before I made anything.  I was actually spending money on new clothes,a gps, gas... Once you get things starts the payout is great.  Once you have been their for 12 months you will start to get renewal checks.
