Title: Net Neutrality Scuffle
Post by: Recusant on October 24, 2009, 11:19:06 PM
So, Senator McCain has introduced a bill with a suitably Orwellian name:  The Internet Freedom Act.  You can read about it here (http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/102209-mccain-introduces-bill-to-block.html?source=NWWNLE_nlt_daily_pm_2009-10-22).  Why would John McCain introduce such a bill?   Follow the money (http://www.reuters.com/article/vcCandidateFeed7/idUS246040901420091024).
I hope the bill goes down in flames, but I'm interested in hearing a reasoned defense of it from some of the "free market" type members of this forum.  Feel free to quote Glenn Beck.

Note that this is not the bill with a very similar name (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:S.215:) introduced earlier this year.  In fact that bill is meant to give the concept of net neutrality the force of law.  Here's (http://www2.tbo.com/content/2009/aug/09/co-internet-freedom-act-anything-but/news-opinion-commentary/) a commentary on that bill from somebody opposed to it.

Ugh, the dems aren't exactly paragons of goodness or anything but at least they don't pull shit like this, WHAT THE HELL? Does he honestly believe he is promoting freedom by doing this? This is just plain crazy and I bet the majority if not all of the republicans in DC will support this 100% They 're always crying freedom and the irony is so damn painful.

The only thing resembling an official document I can find is McCain's press release (http://mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressOffice.PressReleases&ContentRecord_id=7ccc25b5-9d63-321c-0238-805ed7bafc6b) about the bill.

I find it ironic that it's called the Internet Freedom Act. It prevents the FCC from restricting telecom companies ability to selectively impose bandwidth and usage restrictions. In that sense it is about freedom (for telecom companies). But the restrictions the FCC is trying to impose are to preserve the freedom of Internet users. So I am not in favor of McCain's bill.

I am somewhat reservedly in agreement with the FCC. The reason I am not in full agreement is because there are good reasons for restricting bandwidth (though most of them are not good). Take for example the feature of some cable broadband where when you start to download a file you get a temporary initial boost in download speed. That's great if you're just browsing web pages rather than downloading a large file. Would that stop with the FCC regulations?

Damn, I'm glad McCain didn't become president. This would be a prime opportunity for a judicious heart attack to prove a certain someone's existence...Well. Maybe not prove. But it would be a good start.

Jesus Christ, this bill better not pass.

I'd rather have him than some empty suit like Obama who bows down to Russia over missile defense sites in our ALLY'S country. Poland got a big "fuck you" from the US when we let Russia have its bottle. Russia can't even fund/service its orbital defense system. We should basically teach it a lesson for all the Cold War shit it pulled. Where are the strong leaders when we need them? So far we have some wussy who can't handle being President and then this shit. We need bold men to do bold things so we may have a bold future. Until then, America will wallow in the PC shit storm that is "progressivenism" or whatever it's called by hippies.

I wonder whose ass Obama will kiss next. Damn it, we run the planet, what the fuck are we doing being a whipping boy for public opinion?!? I say we invade Iran and just do a Genghis Khan style slaughter. Salt the earth and shit. Works for the Chinese, it should work for us.

He didn't remove that stuff because he bent over for Russia, he removed it because it was proven to be USELESS, the technology hardly works and it was a mad waste of money, he didn't remove it because Russia said so.

Yeah, whatever, the quotes were to help stabilize the area or some political nonsense. It wasn't a technical issue because they work fine. Obama has no spine when it comes to Russia and China, hell the rest of the world really, and he just is eager to please anyone who will tell him he's ever so pretty, smart, and wonderful. I'm not saying be a total Bush but honestly, you have to be ready to put people in their place. Of course it's still amateur hour at the White House for another 3 years.

US-Russian relations will always be crap. But I suppose if we want brownie points from a country that can't even keep it's people employed or actually have a medical system that works, whatever.

I disagree, they work extremely well. Obama just can't be a man to other world leaders.

Did you read the article? Heck, did you read the link in the article that extended over 9 pages talking about just how ridiculous that missile system is? I think you just want to have someone to hate and it's easy to hate the president.

No, I just hate him because he sucks at his job and is ruining America worse than Bush.
