Title: Smoking Cessation.
Post by: Big Mac on October 19, 2009, 01:36:02 AM
I quit smoking on the 2nd and have a slight issue. I seem to eat more than before now that I haven't touched a single cigarette. Now that I have completely quit I don't understand why I ever started. I can smell way better for the first time in years (my spicy pumpkin candles smell even better without all that horrible crap clogging my nasal passages) though that can also have drawbacks. Homeless people on the bus really stink worse than I thought. All in all it's a good thing but I seem to be hungrier and hungrier each day.

Any advice from people who have kicked the habit?

I'm quitting right now too.

Pay attention to if you are actually more hungry or if you are trying to do something as a replacement for smoking.  I don't feel more hungry now but sometimes I do realize I'm wanting to eat to try and cover up the desire to go smoke.  Stock up on healthy snacks and don't sit so close to homeless people on the bus ;)

edit:  You have spicy pumpkin candles!?

I love scented candles! I also drink green/herbal tea a lot and enjoy soaking in the tub after a long day. I grew up with 3 women in the house and the only other male was my brother who was a little boy. I can appreciate the things chick do to relax. Aside from the macho act online I'm pretty secure with my sexuality to enjoy "girly" things.

I can't help the homeless situation too much, they tend to crowd the buses in Austin.I try to chew gum but like right now I've eaten two big helpings of saurkraut, a countless amount of bite size chocolate bars and twizzlers and I'm still pretty hungry. I don't think the few beers I've had seem to be helping but I need it to relax while studying. THis was supposed to be a white month for me but since I quit smoking I need one vice to say semi-sane.

You just didn't strike me as someone who would enjoy pretty smells lol.

Do you like hummus?  If so, get some healthy hummus (make it yourself if necessary) and eat it with veggies.  The crunch of the veggies should help some of your cravings and the good fat from the olive oil in the hummus will help fill you up.  I have also found flavored yogurt helpful.  I just lost weight, I'm not going to gain it back from quitting smoking!!!

I love things that smell nice. I think it was the fact I was raised around potpourri, scented candles, perfume, and vase flowers that I'm more accustomed to it than most guys.

I love hummus, that's a great idea! I seem to be maintaining my weight so far, I think I've noticed less shortness of breath climbing stairs/walking briskly that I'm doing it more.

Carry on eating. It is fun! If you currently have three square meals a day, turn that into four. If you usually have one big mac at Macdonalds, have three from now on. Replacing one addiction for another is awesome! It also makes you feel much better!  :yay:

Hoisted by my own petard.....I tip my hat to you sir.

And all jokes aside (even stupid ones like the one I tried to play in the last post) scented candles are great. A cheap pleasant way to provide some heat in the home and a great scent to boot.

If it's an oral fixation, you may want to give sugarless gum a try. Often times, smoking becomes a habitual ritual of just something to do. It's not even necessarily about the nicotine. I like nihilist gum.

Nihilist gum? Does it break into you apartment while your taking a bath and throws a ferret into the tub? Then it threatens to cut off your johnson. Does it believe in nothing?

I myself eat a lot. Recently I started walking one mile a day to see if that will help me lose my considerably sized gut. Time will tell...

BigMac, if you're going to eat more, you just have to excercise more. If you do it before you gain weight, then it won't become a problem!

I think it's easier to eat less than it is to exercise more if the eating more is not due to an actual need to eat.

No, it's entirely flavorless. It's as pointless as life.

And johnson is not the preferred nomenclature.

My strategy is eat what ever I feel like eating, but simply run 3-5 miles per day.

Should work pretty well until I get to the age of 30-40 :P

Walter this isn't some guy who built the railroads, he peed on my rug!!!

Another problem I've been having is pure disgust for people who smoke. I can't watch people smoke anymore without thinking I'm better than them and my penis is undoubtedly bigger. This especially applies when I see women smoking. My penis is definitely bigger than their penis. You too can have a large wang, just stop smoking!

I'm cool with smokers, but as an asthma sufferer I'm not a big fan of cigarette smoke. I believe in an individual's right to kill him or herself, and that extends to behaviors that are potentially fatal too so long as they don't also put other people in danger. In other words, if you so choose, please enjoy smoking on your own or with people that don't mind. If you smoke around me, one of us has to leave or we'll be potentially headed to the ER.

And yes, it's almost too big.

I think we should build camps that we put the Smokers in where they need to CONCENTRATE on not smoking.\

Joking aside, food tastes so much better now. I think that might be a big reason why the increased eating. That and I went up three flights of stairs with only slightly heavier breathing where as before I'd huff pretty badly for a few minutes.

By the way, it's about a month without smoking. I now have a favorite scent. Jasmine Bambooo. Bold but  subtle enough to enjoy. It lingers in the air but not in an overbearing way.

I too am trying to quit. The hardest part is while I hate smoking I looove smoking too. If that makes any sense. My biggest problem is it seems everytime I almost quit I also have a couple to many beers. Since I smoke more when I drink anyway and my inhibitions are lowered I always seems to say "fuck it" and have a cigerette...then another...then another then I end up having to start all over again.

I had a dream last night that I went to the tobacco shop and bought my usual order of tobacco and papers. I was even rationalizing it with "Oh, a few a day isn't that bad!" and in my dream I realized I had given all the rolling equipment to my brother. I awoke and thought that was weird. I have no real urge to smoke and I am amazed at how easy it was for me to quit.

But I also hardly smoked anything near a half pack a day at the most. Often I'd only smoke at work as well.

If smoking were not deadly, it would be the epitome of cool by now. You know why so many people started smoking in the first place? Because it looked badass, and we didn't know the health-risks.

Anyone who invents a healthy cigarette will be rich.

They have E-cigarettes where it vaporizes the nicotine and thats all you inhale.

In a sci-fi way it kind of is. Really though, you're essentially sucking on a tailpipe. It's not very glamorous when you think about it.

Congrats on quitting.  I quit too, 4 months ago.   I joined a quit smoking forum and there was a lot of support, but basically everyone gained weight and i guess if you don't exercise it off, there's no way around it.    I would say the oral fixation started to wear off after a couple months, though.   Best thing to do is not keep any of the stuff in the house.  I started just doing daily shopping for dinner and not keeping any munchies around.   Quitting munching is much like smoking.  You look at your craving for food the same way as the cigarette, just sit there and bite the bullet and the craving will go away.

BTW any quitters can get some really valuable quitting info without any god stuff at Whyquit.com.    Its an excellent site for inspiration and knowledge of the addiction.  It will help you keep your quit, for sure.

Good luck!

hello
first one i can't get your mean whats u trying to say with more hunger.
i suggest u to keep distance with people have  such habit because its able to divert you again towards the smoking .
and when ever u realized that you need something instead of sigarate you can tried something else like gum to just divert your mind and afterward slowly slowly  its helping you out from its.

We use God's System (imperial) when it comes to measurements, sir.

Just kidding. People keep insisting that it seems like I've lost weight. I have been doing calisthenics a lot more and trying to watch what I eat but it being finals week and focusing on getting everything in order leaves me with making poor dietary habits. Coupled with sedentary living that I've had, it makes for a nasty combination.

It's been almost 2 months now and I don't have even the slightest urge to smoke. I literally get sick just smell people who smoked a cigarette within the past few minutes. My sense of smell has really heightened from what it used to be.
