Title: A 'new' intro to the 'Origin of Species'.
Post by: navvelline on September 18, 2009, 10:19:00 PM
OK, so I’m not entirely sure if this has been a topic already…I did try searching for it and found zero results. Or if I even put this in the right forum area, if I haven't, my apologies!
I came to learn via face book about two fellows named Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron (I’m familiar with Cameron but not Comfort.) Anyway, they apparently host this show called “Way of the Master” or something and they’re planning to distribute 50,000 copies of the ‘Origin of Species’ to local college campuse.

From the FB group:
QuoteOn Thursday November 19, 2009, Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort (the banana guy) will be distributing 50,000 copies of Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species' at universities across America to students for free.

BUT THERE'S A CATCH!!

Each copy will have a 50 page intro about how evolution has never been proven and how Darwin helped inspire the Holocaust.

You can watch this video for more information:

Or read the 50 page intro here:

What does everyone think of this? Does it upset you or just amuse you?
I’m actually astounded that someone would go to such lengths to discredit someone, especially when they can’t defend they’re work. I’m not worried about Darwin, he’s much credible than either one and I'm also aware that people can have they're opinions BUT writing a introductory like that to someone else's work is ridiculous.

For a start, PZ Myers on his Pharyngula blog has been all over this one:

Ray Comfort is a creationist who, I am sad to say, orignates from my home City, Christchurch....well famed in atheist circles for his video on "the banana- the atheists nightmare...."

Ray Comfort likes to discredit stuff he knows nothing about.  Ray is an evangelist who actually got pretty popular because of his Way of the Master series.  http://www.ironchariots.org at that site there is a deconstruction of a few of the episodes.  But this asshat is an author of lovely books like You can lead an atheist to evidence, but you cant make him think and God doesn't believe in atheists: Proof that atheists don't exist.

Anyway this really doesn't surprise me.  He likes to attack Darwin (and quote mine him) however i'm pretty sure hes going to treat the origin of species like its everything we currently know about evolution which isn't true.  Ray is good at making straw men part of me is interested to see how many fallacies he can make in 50 pages.

I rather like this idea.

If you can fund it i'd volunteer to distribute it.  I live in the bible belt but I think it would be funny ^_^

That's an interesting blog there. Hadn't heard of this until about a week ago.
What's interesting about the whole thing is the colleges they've decided to hand the books out. Harvard, Yale, Notre Dame, UNC Chapel Hill, and Duke University among some of them.  :|

Honestly, though... despite the fact that the domesticated, sterile, seedless, and edible-while-raw banana exists only because of human intervention,  this is much worse:

Wow…all the things that happen in the "holy" bible…and they have the audacity to call evolution a “fairytale”?

Things like this make me want to say something like, "Jesus H. Christ on a popsicle stick!" or, "Dear God in heaven! What are these dumb fucks thinking?"

But I don't say that.

Because it wouldn't make sense, being a non-believer and all.

But shit, I really want to.

Leave it to these people who know nothing about evolution to tell everyone that evolution is wrong.  Why is it their opinion is often put on the same level as a credited expert in the field?  Which reminds me of this youtube video :P

Get in the fookin sack Ray Comfort!!!

Well, there's an update in their plans:

LINK:
http://raycomfortfood.blogspot.com/2009 ... tting.html (http://raycomfortfood.blogspot.com/2009/09/origin-of-species-give-away-is-getting.html)

QuoteIn case you haven't yet heard, there's been so much commotion about what Kirk and Ray have been planning on doing, that it has actually caused them to cancel their plans and they are now instead planning on distributing COMPLETE (meaning, unabridged) copies of 'Origin of Species', as opposed to the severely edited versions they'd been advertising.

In addition to that, Ray has said that he recognizes that Darwin's personal attributes have nothing to do with the validity of evolutionary theory, and that he does not want the new intro he's writing to have any straw man arguments or other logical fallacies.

I realize that this is all very difficult to believe, but you can read it right here on his blog. (Maybe he's on some sort of medication?)
